PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY (May 5, 2018) – Carli Lloyd’s presence hasn’t been enough for Sky Blue FC.

The New Jersey-based club is struggling this season to win matches and earn points. After Sky Blue’s 3-2 loss to the Houston Dash at Yurcak Field in New Jersey, Sky Blue sits in last place.

However, the Houston Dash aren’t much farther ahead.

Instead, Houston sits in eighth place, with five points. The three points certainly helped, with the Washington Spirit only ahead of them due to the goal difference tiebreaker.

On Saturday, Houston had three much-needed goals scored by Nichelle Prince, Rachel Daly, and Veronica Latsko. In goal, Jane Campbell made one save.

Meanwhile, Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan made three saves. Katie Johnson scored both of Sky Blue’s goals, which were assisted by Shea Groom and Sarah Killion.

After the match, Sky Blue FC Head Coach Denise Reddy said she “really liked” the response Sky Blue showed in the second half.

“We established a good rhythm and scored two goals, but we just came out a little bit unfortunate in the end,” Reddy said. “On a good day, we likely come away with the result. Overall, I was happy with our response in the second half and in finding a way to put two goals into the back of the net.”

Three Takeaways

  1. Katie Johnson filling a big role for Sky Blue: It’s no secret that Carli Lloyd has been off her game since last season. A lackluster season in Houston has so far carried over to Sky Blue. Meanwhile, Katie Johnson, a Mexican international, is filling in the role of leader for Sky Blue FC.
  2. Don’t praise Houston just yet: Right now, the Houston Dash are close to being tied with the Washington Spirit, as both clubs have five points. However, I’d place my bets on Washington any day of the week, as their roster has Ashley Hatch, Andi Sullivan, and Mallory Pugh.
  3. Reddy shouldn’t be afraid of Lloyd: When Lloyd isn’t producing on the field, it’s time for Reddy to replace her. However, instead of using one of her substitutes on the World Cup winner, Reddy elected to take Raquel Rodriguez out for Groom. Those are two players you want to have on the pitch together.
