Jesse Marsch Sees New York Red Bulls Team Effort Against NYCFC

Four Players, Four Goals

In the battle for New York, the Red Bulls have the advantage. While NYCFC are first in the Eastern Conference, their goalscorers were kept down by the Red Bull defense. Goals by Alejandro “Kaku” Romero Gamarra (2′), Florian Valot (4′), and Bradley Wright-Philips (35′) effectively sewed up the game for the Red Bulls before the halftime whistle.

NYCFC coach Patrick Veiria made tactical changes at halftime, but RBNY adjusted to match. Derrick Etienne Jr.’s strike in the 79th minute was proof of that. When asked about the goals from four different players, Wright-Phillips said it was an important element for team culture: “It was an all-around performance. The front four was good today.”

Back Line, Front Line

The movement of defenders up the field in the second half was part of the tactical adjustment. Tyler Adams and Sean Davis dropped back, allowing Kemar Lawrence and Michael Amir Murillo the freedom to surge forward. This also meant that Aaron Long and Tim Parker had to hold strong in the center as the players shifted around them. They kept David Villa and Maxi Moralez from threatening the goal. With only one shot on target for NYC, goalkeeper Luis Robles’s single save was a slightly easier work day.

Defender Tim Parker is ready to lead the back line to the next level. Following a strong tenure with Vancouver, he feels he can lead the Red Bulls defense, but that it won’t be handed to him. “You gotta earn the trust of the guys in the locker room,”  he said after the game. “Obviously that comes on the field and off the field.” With Aurelien Collin, Connor Lade, and Kyle Duncan injured, Parker has that opportunity.

Marsch: “This is our identity.”

The New York Red Bulls have succeeded through player development. Homegrown players fill the roster and the stat sheets. The relationship between the first team and USL affiliate Red Bulls II has yielded positive results for both teams. “I’m a big fan of what John [Wolyniec]’s doing with that group right now and that’s a whole new crop of players coming through.” Recent signing Ethan Kutler is the seventh player from Red Bulls II to join the first team.
