HOUSTON, TEXAS – History was made in more ways than one at BBVA Compass Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Carli Lloyd scored her 100th international goal in the United States Women’s National Team 6-2 victory over Mexico. The match was a tune up before the two teams face each other in October for CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers.

Lloyd’s historic goal came in the 34th minute of a four-goal first half.

Mallory Pugh began the scoring with a 3rd minute goal. Lindsey Horan followed and Alex Morgan scored in the 44th minute.

Morgan scored again in the 68th minute. Against Mexico on Thursday, Morgan also had two goals.

Megan Rapinoe, who had four assists, got herself on the score sheet in the 64th minute.

Unlike Thursday, Mexico managed to score two goals. The first goal came from Monica Ocampo in the 17th minute, while Kiana Palacios scored against USWNT goalkeeper Jane Campbell in the 24th minute.

Along with Lloyd’s 100th goal, more history was made in the 75th minute when Sofia Huerta entered the match for Emily Sonnett. Huerta formerly featured for the Mexican Women’s National Team, but was award a one-time switch by FIFA to join the United States in September 2017.

Three Takeaways

  1. Time for some new goalkeepers: To be fair, Jane Campbell couldn’t do much to prevent Mexico’s goals from Ocampo and Palacios. However, neither Campbell and Alyssa Naeher (not counting Ashlyn Harris, since she got less than 20 minutes of action on Sunday) impressed against Mexico. USWNT Head Coach Jill Ellis is way overdue in bringing in goalkeepers like Sabrina D’Angelo, Adrianna Franch and Abby Smith.
  2. Rapinoe was the player of the match: Despite scoring goal 100 and another back-to-back brace for Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe was the player of the match. Even after recording four assists, Rapinoe pushed for more. Mexico goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago couldn’t keep her in check on assists — and on her goal.
  3. Tierna Davidson and Becky Sauerbrunn are a dream: Becky Sauerbrunn is a player that isn’t letting age define her. Her toughness never comes into question, as she put her body on the line more than one time against Mexico. Making her return to the starting lineup, she was partnered with 19-year-old Tierna Davidson instead of Abby Dahlkemper. The partnership between the veteran and the young Stanford defender never missed a beat.
