FRISCO, TX. – Colorado Rapids got their first road point of the 2018 season on Saturday night. They drew with FC Dallas 1-1 on Saturday night. A late Coleman goal canceled out an earlier goal from Mason as the two teams shared the points.

Joe Mason Goal Lifts Colorado Rapids Over FC Dallas 1-0

The first half was relatively uneventful, but FC Dallas was the better side. They outshot Colorado 7-2, but both sides had just two shots on goal. The Dallas attacking front four all got opportunities. Their best of the half came in the 24th minute when Anton Nedyalkov cut inside and around Deklan Wynne and got a shot off. The Bulgarian shot straight at Tim Howard though.

For Colorado, their best chance came in the 25th minute when Dominique Badji got a chance off a throw in. Jimmy Maurer didn’t handle it well but grabbed it off the line before Joe Mason was able to finish the play. The half ended 0-0.

The match opened up in the 62nd minute as Joe Mason scored off Badji creating space on Matt Hedges to win the ball. The two forwards played pinged the ball back and forth as Mason beat Maurer from inside the box.

Dallas made several changes and threw numbers forward as both sides got chances. Tim Howard had to make several saves, but the Rapids seemed to be holding their own. That ended in the 89th minute as Cristian Coleman headed home a ball on a long ball to tie the match. The ball from Mauro Diaz was excellent on the goal.

The contest would end 1-1.

Three Things I Noticed:

Inconsistent play from both sides: Both teams have had issues playing a full 90 minutes this year. FC Dallas has now played four home games and earned just one win. They haven’t been able to score early and hold on against opponents, nor have they been able to finish them off. On the other side, the Rapids continue to have poor first halves. This is now the third game in four they have conceded a goal in the final five minutes of play.

A good striker problem: Rapids Manager Anthony Hudson now has an excellent problem on his hands: He has a bunch of options at striker. Badji and Mason are scoring and finding some chemistry. Niki Jackson has scored and continued to improve. Stefan Aigner and Shkelzen Gashi are getting healthy and Yannick Boli is getting fit. With a healthy and fit roster, Hudson has six potential starting strikers and seven who can play.

Yellow cards: There were five yellow cards in this match, four of them against the Colorado Rapids. Midfielder Jack Price has now had yellow cards in three straight games. The cards were mostly for chippy fouls. Yellow card accumulation could start to become a concern for Colorado in the weeks and months to come.
