Preview: New York Red Bulls vs. Minnesota United FC

With one week removed after their loss to Real Salt Lake, the Red Bulls head home to host the Loons of Minnesota United at Red Bull Arena. Both squads will be missing some key players due to National Team commitments, but Jesse Marsch’s men will still have the bulk of his team healthy and intact.

New York Red Bulls vs. Minnesota United FC Preview

Saturday’s match is going to test Minnesota’s depth as defenders Francisco Calvo, and Michael Boxhall head off for friendlies with Costa Rica and New Zealand, respectively, and midfielder Rasmus Schuller joins up with Finland. Add in the possibility that defender Tyrone Mears could be unavailable after picking up a knock during training. Mears has provided stout defense down the right side and is the go-to set-piece taker for the team

“We could be out virtually half the team for the weekend,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “So it’s never ideal, but I always talk about it: One door closes, another door opens for somebody else. You know, we’ve got a lot of faith in the draft picks that we have, and that’s why whether it’s Carter Manley, Brent Kallman – training really hard, waiting for his opportunity – they’re going to get an opportunity.”

Prospective Starting XI:

GK: Matt Lampson — Jerome Thiesson, Wyatt Omsberg, Brett Kallman, Marc Burch — Collin Martin, Ibson — Ethan Finlay, Miguel Ibarra, Sam Nicholson — Christian Ramirez

Meanwhile, the Red Bulls have found success following a loss under head coach Jesse Marsch. New York is 15-10-6 all-time with him at the helm following a loss in MLS regular-season play. After a road loss, the Red Bulls have bounced back nicely with an 11-7-5 mark.

However, four Red Bulls players have been called in by their respective national teams for upcoming friendlies themselves. Tyler Adams gets his third-straight call-up to the senior U.S. Men’s National Team. Kemar Lawrence will join Jamaica and defenders Fidel Escobar, and Michael Amir Murillo will be with Panama.

New York Red Bulls Prospective Starting XI:
GK: Luis Robles — Kyle Duncan, Tim Parker, Aaron Long, Connor Lade — Marc Rzatkowski, Florian Valot — Sean Davis, Kaku, Daniel Royer — Bradley Wright-Phillips

With both sides missing key starters and Minnesota’s defense being put to the test by the press delivered by New York’s attackers, look for this to be a yet another entertaining match on Saturday night.
