San Jose Earthquakes Trade Goalkeeper David Bingham to LA Galaxy

SAN JOSE, CALI. (December 18, 2017) – The San Jose Earthquakes announced on Monday that they have traded goalkeeper David Bingham to the LA Galaxy. The Earthquakes may receive as much as $250,000 in Allocation Money in the exchange.

“We want to thank David for everything he’s given to the Quakes,” said General Manager Jesse Fioranelli. “He’s been an important part of the team for the last seven seasons and we wish him well in LA.”

According to the team’s official press release, San Jose will receive $100,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) and $100,000 in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM). The Quakes may receive an additional $50,000 in TAM next season, depending on Bingham’s 2018 performance with his new club.

The 28-year-old Bingham was once the Earthquakes’ starting goalkeeper, making 96 appearances and 95 starts, before falling out of favor with the coaching staff last season. Backup keeper Andrew Tarbell excelled during the team’s U.S. Open Cup run, which led to his replacing Bingham in the starting lineup for the rest of the season.

David Bingham earned his first international cap with the U.S. Men’s National Team in a friendly against Canada last February. He played a full 90 minutes in the USMNT’s 1-0 victory.

Bingham has a 34-35-27 career record for the Earthquakes since the team drafted him out of UC Berkeley before the 2011 season, including 27 shutouts and a 1.24 goals against average.

For the Earthquakes, the move makes sense from a roster standpoint. Bingham has been replaced in the lineup by Tarbell, who is the team’s starting keeper for the foreseeable future. However, San Jose is running the risk of Bingham returning to his old form, and becoming a key player for their biggest rival for years to come.

For the Galaxy, this move is a great addition. David Bingham comes in as a relatively low cost option for the club, and can be a low-risk high-reward signing. If he does return to his 2016 form, he could be the man between the sticks in LA for a very long time.
