Late Lamar Neagle Goal Rescues A Point For Seattle Sounders Against LA Galaxy

Both sides came out punching in a big rivalry match. Seattle were looking to cement their place at the top of the Western Conference. The Galaxy might still be grasping at a ~1% chance at the playoffs. Regardless, many of their players could be playing for their jobs for 2018.

The Sounders played quickly up the middle through Dempsey and Morris. LA on the other side, looked to create through crosses into the box and corners.

The Galaxy surprisingly struck first in the 25th minute. They had some great and quick ball movement into the final third, mostly through Jonathan dos Santos. He found Alessandrini on the flank, who delivered a precise cross into the box. Zardes headed it across goal to wrong-foot Frei and the Galaxy were up 1-0.

Things got complicated 30 minutes in when Goalkeeper Jon Kempin had to be subbed out due to an injury. Brian Rowe came on and had to make several saves. The half ended with the Galaxy leadin 1-0 with Seattle outshooting them 11-4.

Seattle got the lion’s share of the chances in the second half, but they weren’t as good quality as the first half. Substitute Will Bruin brought some energy to the side late in the half.

It was another substitute, Lamar Neagle, who found the back of the net. Torres got his foot to a long ball from midfield. Neagle ran onto it in the box and bounced it off the turf and past Rowe to make it 1-1.

The match had some late drama as Torres was sent off for a tackle on Jermaine Jones just outside the box. Seattle created a few shots down a man in stoppage time, but could not score. The match ended 1-1.

Scoring Summary:

25′ Los Angeles – Gyasi Zardes, assisted by Romain Alessandrini and Jonathan dos Santos
85′ Seattle – Lamar Neagle, assisted by Román Torres and Osvaldo Alonso

Last Word:

For Galaxy fans, it was nice to see their team not play terribly two games in a row. They moved the ball decently well through the midfield. This was probably Jonathan dos Santos’s best game since joining the club. Zardes scored a good goal, his second in as many games (and the year). Sure, it stinks giving up a lead in the last five minutes of a game. This team still isn’t likely to make the playoffs regardless. In a vacuum, this was a decent result. For several individuals, their preformances will be a confidence builder.

For Seattle, these were two points dropped. They’re second in the conference now (albeit with a game in hand). They do deserve a bit of a pass given that Dempsey and Jordan Morris were on short rest due to national team duty. They had trouble finishing but created lots of chances against a bad team at home. Hopefully they’ll be better next match with fresh legs. They will be without Torres due to the red card, which will hurt them.
