MIAMI, FL (July 22, 2017) – The CONCACAF Gold Cup Disciplinary Committee has issued a decision on the incidents involving several El Salvador players in a match against the United States Men’s National Team.

CONCACAF Disciplinary Committee Suspends El Salvador Players

Earlier this week, El Salvador lost in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarterfinals to the United States, 2-0. The match took a dark turn in the second half. On one play, center back Henry Romero bit Jozy Altidore in the shoulder. On another similar play, he grabbed and twisted Altidore’s pectoral region. In both cases, Salvadorian goalkeeper Derby Carrillo was used as a screen from the officials.

In another incident, Darwin Ceren bit Omar Gonzalez. TV replay caught all three of these plays, but the officials did not. You can view these shameful shenanigans here and here if you haven’t seen them already. In response, The CONCACAF Gold Cup Disciplinary Committee has come out with these decisions:

– Player Henry Romero receives a six-match ban from participating in the next official matches with the El Salvador national team;
– Player Darwin Ceren receives a three-match ban from participating in the next official matches with the El Salvador national team.

This was an excellent and surprising decision from CONCACAF, at least for me. For precident, Luis Suarez has been suspended nine games for a biting incident in the 2014 World Cup. This was not his first offense.

CONCACAF has made it clear that these actions will not be tolerated in future competition. I did find it interesting that they essentially ruled biting and a purple nurple to be equally bad actions. I was curious to see if they would punish Head Coach Eduardo Lara, but it’s still unclear where these actions came from.

Following CONCACAF’s handling of the French Guiana/Florent Malouda situation, it’s good to see the CONCACAF Disciplinary Committee taking the integrity of the game seriously.
