Editorial (July 14, 2017) – El Salvador got a massive win in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup yesterday. They defeated Curacao 2-0 in Denver, CO. This put them firmly in third in the group, just one point behind Jamaica and Mexico. This sets them up for essentially a second place playoff with Jamaica on Sunday.

Zelaya Leads El Salvador To Win Over Curacao: Sets Up 2nd Place Clash With Jamaica

El Salvador came out on fire in a must win game against Curacau. Rodolfo Zelaya was on fire offensively. He had an assist and a goal in the first half. Gerson Mayen was electric from a wide position. The two combined throughout the match to get the win.

While the opponent was the weakest team in the group, it was good for El Salvador to create chances and finish them. They had their moments against Mexico on Sunday, but they ultimately got pulled apart. They’ll look to build on this going into the final group game.

El Tri finish up with a game against Curacao. While they had trouble finishing against Jamaica, let’s assume they win that game easily. That means the winner of El Salvador vs. Jamaica will take second place. Should they draw, Jamaica will finish second and El Salvador will finish third.

The Reggae Boyz have shown in both their games that they are content to let the other team have the ball. El Salvador will have to be sharper at the back and they’ll need to use their build up play to break them down. This will provide a new test for them as they relied on their counter attack in their first two games.

This is a great tactical test for both of these teams. They’ll be looking to be sharper. The winner will have a better matchup come the knockout round. It’s all on the line for these two countries looking to improve their standing in CONCACAF.
