Orlando City SC Defeat New York City FC to Open 2017 Season

Orlando City SC and New York City FC played their second “big opener” in the past three seasons. Both of them opened at the “Citrus Bowl” in 2015, as they started their MLS history. NYCFC got the better of the “firsts” for the club as they became the first of the two to qualify for the postseason in 2016. This time around, Orlando City gets the first, as they hosted the first game in their brand spanking new stadium.

It was quite the physical game, which is to be expected. The game was woven with storylines. Jason Kreis starting the season with Orlando, after being fired from NYCFC two years ago. So far, Kreis is now 2-0 against NYCFC. Tonight, Cyle Larin was the one who delivered the revenge on the behalf of Kreis.

Kaka pulled up with injury in the first ten minutes. His replacement, Giles Barnes was the one who sent in the crucial cross. Larin did really well to ghost in behind Alexander Caellens. He timed his run to the back post perfectly. A smart header towards Sean Johnson’s feet made it an incredibly difficult ball to get to and ended up bulging the back of the net.

After that, there really were no more clear cut chances, as Orlando’s staunch back line did well to frustrate NYCFC’s attack. NYCFC started to look dangerous in the final 15 minutes, but ultimately OCSC saw it out to the final whistle.

Larin and Kaka will be the focus of attention for OCSC fans and staff as both succumbed to injury today. We’ll have to wait and see if they are able to go for their match next Saturday against the New England Revolution. Speaking of the next match, NYCFC will take on D.C. United next Sunday in their home opener.
