LA Galaxy Sign Goalkeeper Jon Kempin: Dan Kennedy To Leave Club

CARSON, CA (March 3, 2017) – The LA Galaxy have signed former Sporting KC Goalkeeper Jon Kempin. He is 22-years-old and made 12 starts for Sporting’s USL team Swope Park Rangers in 2016. There’s more to this story though.

LA Galaxy Sign Goalkeeper Jon Kempin: Something Is In The Works With Four Goalkeepers

Kempin signed as a Generation Adidas player at the age of 17. He made only nine appearances for Sporting in the six years he was there. He did have several loan stints throughout the USL and spent 2016 with the club’s USL affiliate, Swope Park.

General Manager Peter Vagenas said “Jon is a young player with potential that can provide us with valuable depth at the goalkeeper position. He impressed during our preseason this year and we are excited to bring him on board.”

Kempin is clearly behind both Brian Rowe and Clement Diop. Kempin could spend time with Los Dos this season.

But there’s a complication here. With Kempin, Rowe, Diop, and Dan Kennedy, the Galaxy have four goalkeepers. The club clearly signed him to a first team contract, not a USL contract. And Los Dos already have two keepers on their roster.

That was until earlier this week when it came out that Dan Kennedy and the club will part ways. He was set to make about $180k this year. That’s a lot for an aging back up goalkeeper.

Now there are a few ways that Kennedy could move on. He could be retiring. He’ll be on the radio broadcast for the Galaxy tomorrow. He could also be released. The latter probably costs the Galaxy some money in some way.

We’ll have to wait and see. Regardless, the Galaxy have added another young player with potential. Another aging and overpaid player is moving on. The youth movement continues.
