Atlanta United Signs Carlos Carmona From Atalanta

Atlanta United have used some Targeted Allocation Money to bring in another international player. This time they have bought Carlos Carmona, a Chilean midfielder, from Atalanta in Italy’s Serie A. He has been with the club with 2010, when they were a second tier club. His role there has waned in the past few years, but he was once a regular starter in the midfield for a club that has become a Serie A mainstay.

Atlanta United Signs Carlos Carmona From Atalanta

Carmona has played six seasons in Italy’s top flight. Since he helped lead Atalanta to promotion in 2011, the club has not left the top tier. He hasn’t been a regular starter since the 2014-15 campaign, when he started 32 matches.

He has never been a goal scorer, he only has five goals in the last six years and none since 2014. He is, however, a skilled passer of the ball. He has completed 85.5% of his pass attempts in his Serie A career. He has also represented Chile at the last two World Cups. His role in 2010 was stronger as he started three games.

Carmona represents the link between Atlanta United’s potent attack and stalwart defense. On paper, this team was going to do a great job keeping goals out, but would struggle to score goals without a stellar midfield. Carmona addresses this problem.

He is also a strong tackler defensively and has a bit of an issue with discipline. In his last season as a full time starter in Italy, he accumulated 12 yellow cards and was sent off once. He has started two matches this season and was shown yellow in each and sent off in one.

He figures to start in central midfield with some MLS experience around him. His potential partners include Jeff Larentowicz and Jacob Peterson.
