Colorado Rapids Draft Jaime Siaj And Peguy Ngatcha In 2017 MLS SuperDraft

CARSON, CA (January 18, 2017) – The 2017 MLS SuperDraft is in the books. The league held a conference call on Tuesday afternoon to complete the third and fourth round of the draft. The Rapids picked defender Jaime Siaj (45th overall) and forward Peguy Ngatcha (86th overall). Siaj is from Spain and went to school at Pfeiffer University in North Carolina. Ngatcha is out of Wright State in Ohio.

The Rapids have already had a good and busy off-season. They’ve added needed depth through both the draft and the academy. Even before that, they were pretty much set as far as goalkeeping, defenders, and defensive midfielders were concerned. With these moves, they’ve added depth to positions of strength.

While there can be diamonds in the rough after the second round of the SuperDraft, it’s really hard to find players who will ultimately make an MLS roster long term. With the MLS-USL affiliation now in place, most teams are looking for 2-3 year projects they can develop gradually. Siaj and Ngatcha do not come from college soccer hotbeds. If they are able to earn a contract, they will most likely be reserve players.

That said, they can both fill a role. Both are forwards. The Rapids offense is hands down the area they need to improve the most from 2016. Siaj scored 47 goals and 28 assists in 69 appearances in college. He was involved in over one goal a game throughout his college career. He did that as a college sophomore.

Ngatcha led Wright State in scoring as a junior, but played only six games this past season. He recorded three goals and one assist. It’s understandable that Ngatcha was one of the last picks in the draft because of that.

While both of these players might be long shots, they are two more options the Rapids have. With the rest of the team all set, might as well go for the underdogs at the one area you need help.
