Players Who Could Impact USMNT-Trinidad and Tobago

The USMNT closes out the semifinal round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying against Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday night. The Yanks are in great shape to qualify for the Hex but a victory over the Soca Warriors would see them finish as Group C winners. Considering the US has won 11 of 12 all-time home meetings with them, it seems fairly likely they can get the full three points.

Which three players on either team could have the most pronounced impact on the game?

Players Who Could Impact USMNT-Trinidad and Tobago

Christian Pulisic

Last game, Christian Pulisic came off the bench getting a brace and notching an assist in 27 minutes. Pulisic is yet to start for the USMNT. As the US are most likely qualified, it is time to give Pulisic his first USMNT start. (The only way the US doesn’t qualify is if they lose and Guatemala wins and makes up a +13 goal differential) He can drastically change the game as a super sub, but now it is time to see how he affects the game from the beginning. As this game virtually means nothing, the kids need to be played.

Joevin Jones

Last game, Trinidad and Tobago clinched a berth in the hex in a 2-2 draw with Guatemala. In that game, Seattle Sounders defender Joevin Jones scored both of the Soca Warriors goals. The left back has been integral in the Trinidad and Tobago qualifying campaign. In order to win the game, he will need to be at his best offensively and defensively. Jones will need to be able to shut down the USMNT right back, but also provide support and service in the attack.

Darlington Nagbe

This hasn’t been the year that the defending MLS Cup champion Portland Timbers thought would happen. The Timbers are struggling to make the playoffs and Darlington Nagbe has not been at his best. But, the most daunting sign was that he failed to make an appearance in the US’s rout of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. In this game, Nagbe needs to prove why he deserves to be in the USMNT picture. Especially with the emergence of Sacha Kljestan, he needs to play well.

When the US are attacking
Depending on the US formation, their attack will vary slightly. Still, look for Michael Bradley to continue to play defensive midfield and play long balls over the top to Jozy Altidore and Bobby Wood. Look to see how the US bridges the gap between the midfield and the forwards.
When Trinidad and Tobago are attacking

Kenwnye Jones is a powerful, strong target forward, similar to Jozy Altidore. If Trinidad and Tobago want to win, they need to deliver balls to him. If they can do that, it will give him the opportunity to work his magic. Delivering the balls starts with Jones. The Sounders man with be called upon to whip in good crosses. In order for Trinidad and Tobago to win, these two will need to link up well.
