Champions Cup 2021/22 draw announced

The Champions Cup 2021/22 draw was announced today as the build up to the new season ramps up.Β As in last season, the 24 teams were drawn into two pools. Tier 1 sides will take on Tier 4 clubs, whilst Tier 2 and 3 teams will play each other home and away. After the success of the round of 16 in 2020/21, it has been retained but as a two-legged stage for this season.

Pool A

Tier one: Exeter Chiefs, Leinster, La Rochelle

Tier two: Sale Sharks, Ulster, Racing 92

Tier three: Northampton Saints, Ospreys, Clermont Auvergne

Tier four:Β  Bath, Glasgow, Montpellier

One of the standout match-ups will be another clash between Exeter and Glasgow, with Stuart Hogg and Johnny Gray renewing rivalries with their old club. Clermont in tier three was always likely to create some interesting ties, and their matches against Ulster and Sale Sharks are sure to be highlights of the tournament.

Pool B

Tier one: Harlequins, Munster, Toulouse

Tier two: Bristol Bears, Connacht, Bordeaux-Begles

Tier three: Leicester Tigers, Scarlets, Stade Francais

Tier four: Wasps, Cardiff Rugby, Castres Olympique

Former winners Wasps and Munster will face-off, hoping they can replicate success of their predecessors of the early 2000s. Champions Toulouse will play Wasps and Cardiff, and would be expected to advance comfortably there. Elsewhere, an Anglo-Welsh affair between Bristol Bears and Scarlets should be tasty.

Several big name clubs return to the top table this year, with Leicester Tigers, Castres and Stade Francais looking to show they still have the power that their reputations suggest.

Champions Cup 2021/22 draw announced

With the pool matches not beginning until December, clubs and supporters have plenty of time to look forward to their four matches. It is now the third attempt to host the finals in Marseilles, and we hope supporters will be able to join the journey and follow their teams around Europe.
