LA Coliseum as home for 2021 LA Giltinis rugby team

Prior to the Major League Rugby (MLR) season has confirmed the LA Giltinis will play at the LA Coliseum. This forms a part of a new deal signed with the Olympics stadium.

This follows up the new signing of Australian rugby International, Adam Ashley-Cooper. The former Wallabies fullback will bring a wealth of experience to the new MLR side; and has a strong relationship with Giltinis head coach, Darren Coleman.

The Aussie relationship is strengthened further by General Manager, Adam Freier. The former player has been steering the drive by the LA Giltinis to make a big splash in the busy Los Angeles (LA) sports market. And signing the deal with the 2028 host stadium for the Olympics is a huge coup.

Creating an LA Giltinis rugby base was key to the side’s future. The partnership is an instant celebration of the bold vision of the LA Giltinis. The aim is to create a magnetic team and success for Los Angeles at a venue renowned for it. It will help the new franchise cap off wonderfully their opening Round One fixture, against the New England Free Jacks, on March 20. Expect the glitterati and pomp to be on show when the LA Giltinis rugby team runs out onto the Coliseum.

“Rugby World Cup is the third biggest sporting event on the planet and many would agree that Los Angeles is the sporting capital of the world so, it became imperative for this city to have the LA Giltinis rugby team based here,” Freier said. “Performance and entertainment will drive what we do here at the LA Giltinis. From our performance on the field, to game day presentation right through to our broadcast, we will be innovative, daring and always have our fans front of mind.”

“We want to appeal to Rugby fans of all ages and we’ll be working hard to attract plenty of new ones in our local community.”

Joe Furin, General Manager of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, said he was looking forward to having the Giltinis return after a lengthy spell. “I’m very excited to have Rugby return to the LA Coliseum for the first time in 65 years.

“We are looking forward to working with Adam and his team and bringing a unique game-day experience to sports fans for many years to come.”

Former Wallaby Adam Ashley-Cooper adds glitter to Giltinis

The LA Guiltiness have added a four-time World Cup player of the pedigree of Ashley-Cooper. This continues the steady flow of signings to the team roster.

The media release included glowing appraisals from the team’s head coach, Darren Coleman. “I’ve had a long association with Adam back to club rugby at Norths in Sydney in 2006. He’s the consummate professional and will bring amazing experience and competitiveness to the Giltinis.”

“His presence will be invaluable for the young American and Canadian outside backs in our squad and Adam will have a fair bit of input to tactics and our game plans.”  

That is an asset, with signings like Chris Robshaw and other senior players offer new franchises. Ashley-Cooper has won Super Rugby with the NSW Waratahs, so knows the formula for a long MLR 2021 season campaign. He said, “Performance starts before you even run onto the field with a really positive team culture built around collectively buying in so everyone puts the team first, you are respectful and each bloke is accountable to our standards.”

“I’ve known (head coach) Darren Coleman for a long while and he has a really good grasp of bringing people together on and off the field. I’m very confident in his role.”
