A revised 2020 Farah Palmer Cup draw has been released by New Zealand Rugby (NZR), with provincial women’s rugby set to resume play in August.
In a pivotal 12 month period, New Zealand will aim to host and defend the Rugby World Cup. Competitions like the Farah Palmer Cup, plus the club and provincial leagues being played currently, all add to the build-up for players and fans.
From the season start on August 22, a nine-week Farah Palmer Cup will be divided into a pool of 8 teams from the ‘North’ and a pool of five teams representing the ‘South’. Each will compete in a round-robin, before a playoff semifinal and final, to determine the best women’s team in New Zealand.

With club rugby in high gear, as well as strategic Black Ferns camps across the country, the provincial competition will demonstrate the ever-improving standard of women’s rugby.
New Zealand Rugby’s Head of Women’s Rugby Cate Sexton said Provincial Unions are well under way in their preparation for what promises to be an exciting season. “There is a lot on the line this season because the level of competition continues to grow, and players will be eager to impress.
“The allure of a black jersey, with the Rugby World Cup at home next year will no doubt bring the best out of players and teams,” said Sexton.

With 13 out of 14 unions committing resources to put up teams in the 2020 Farah Palmer Cup shows that it is now an essential segment of the schedule. With Mitre 10 Cup sides due to assembling in August for a September start, the FPC teams will hold centerstage.
Essential television coverage of many of the 39 scheduled matches, will showcase the women. While several games will feature as double-header games; including on Friday September 11 for North Harbour v Bay of Plenty, to be played ahead of the feature Harbour v Canterbury clash.
