Ebbw Vale Chairman Jon Jones has confirmed the club’s coaching team ahead of next season, with two new additions to the group. Robert Rees brings you the latest from Eugene Cross Park.

Trio re-sign

The club can confirm that Head Coach Greg Woods has been retained by the Steelmen and he’ll be backed up by his two worthy assistants, Lewis Roberts and Darren Venn. Roberts remains as Attack and Backs Coach following spells as a player and S&C Coach at the club.

Venn, in his third season at the club, will remain as Team Manager, and he is in charge of player retention and recruitment at the club, amongst his other many and varying tasks.

In an announcement Darren said, “It’s a real privilege to embark on my fourth season at Ebbw. The management group have worked tirelessly over the last few months to ensure when we do actually start the new season that we have an extremely committed and energetic group of players. These players have been specifically targeted and hand picked with the confidence in them all being able to ensure the team progresses and reaches its full potential.”

Chairman Jon Jones has also expressed his happiness of retaining the triad of coaches. “Greg, as one of the longest serving coaches in the Premiership brings a deal of experience which he puts to full use in ensuring a competitive team takes to the field. As Chairman I recognise that there had been an enormous workload for the coaches last year and over the last six weeks we have added two more names to the team.”

Steelmen add to coaching team

Former Dragons prop forward, and ex-Ebbw Premiership winner Gethin Robinson has returned to the club to fulfil the role of Strength and Conditioning Coach, following his time at Cwmbran RFC. With just under 300 games for the Dragons and Newport RFC before spending three seasons at Eugene Cross Park he brings a great deal of experience to the role.

Having won the Premiership title with both Ebbw and Newport his winning mentality and knowledge of the clubs’ ethos will help push the team to new heights after a season of relegation battling.

“I’m really excited and honoured to be back involved with the Steelmen. I had a great time in my three years at the club as a player, reigniting my love for the game and lifting the Premiership trophy.

“I’m really up for the challenge of helping Greg, Lewis and Jon get the blub back competing for the top spot whilst developing myself in a coaching role.”

The final addition to the club’s management team is Performance and Strength expert Ed Bruce, who is a serving officer with Gwent Police, based in Ebbw Vale.

He is to fill the role of Performance Coach and has a great pedigree having worked with Sale Sharks, England Rugby, Blackpool FC and Rotherham United FC.

“I am really excited to join the club and try and help the team progress and compete at the top of the Premiership table. Ebbw Vale is a big club with a big following, a good squad and enthusiastic coaches so it should be an exciting time once rugby returns,” he said.

Woods ready for another Prem battle

Commenting on his new deal at the club, Greg Woods said, “I feel honoured to be asked by Jon and club officials to re-sign as Head Coach for next season. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club. Once again I will be supported and surrounded by good people who work tirelessly for the club.

“I’m really pleased to see the resources we’re putting in place by bringing in Gethin and Ed, the improvement of the gym and the players room to help with preparation and analysis, this shows our determination to improve players and provide a learning and growing environment for any aspiring player.

“The Premiership is a tough environment with no easy games and I can’t wait to start working hard with the squad.”
