50th-anniversary event sees Kylie headline celebrations

As well as the matches, from the men’s and women’s HSBC Sevens Series fixtures, the Dubai tournament has always had a strong base of invitational fixtures. The Sevens Stadium complex includes multiple fields, as well as Cricket fields, Netball and Tennis courts. This allows for mini-tournaments for schools and club teams to also compete during the week, alongside the main event sevens comp.

The history of the event is also a focus, with the success of the location emerging as one of the featured events on the World Series. With the game developing from the 1970s into the professional contest that will entertain fans, in 2019.

With a record since 1999 on the World Series, the move to The Sevens Stadium in 2008 has been a trendsetter in standards. Others, like the sevens mecca, Hong Kong, are just as popular, with the Dubai leg a hit with ex-pats residing in the UAE.

The 50-anniversary is going to be a huge event, with celebrations on and off the field. This will include VIP guests, dignitaries from the UAE and World Rugby, as well as entertainment Royalty. Kylie Minogue is scheduled to perform, and this will be enjoyed by the teams, as much as the rugby sevens fans and spectators.

Dubai Sevens Men’s tournament

The Dubai Rugby Sevens marks the start of the men’s 2019/20 Sevens Series. An important one, with the season being followed closely by the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Teams will want to begin the season with a result. Expect the leading teams to place a big emphasis on leaping out of the gates, to express their intentions. The US team are one, who will want to develop further on the successes of last year.

With an International compliment of sides from all regions, the US team will compete against Australia, Scotland, and new Series core team, Ireland. The 16 men’s teams are divided into four pools, before the top eight sides qualify for the Dubai Sevens Cup draw.

Fiji (see main picture) are the series title holders. They are probably the most popular team and will have strong support in Dubai. Look for them to charge hard for a place in the Cup finals – with Gold, their ideal reward.

The other eight teams still play-off for the Challenge Trophy, with lucrative series points earned, that goes towards the entire 2019/20 season.

Dubai Sevens Women’s tournament

The women are competing in their second tournament of the World Series. The US team was successful at Glendale, Colorado, and all other sides will target that squad. The Australians will want to avenge their loss, with the New Zealand team wanting to improve from third place.

The competition will be white-hot. The draw pitting the Black Ferns 7s against England and France. It could be seen as the ‘pool of Death’ yet it is also an attractive bet. Which team will top that group?

As seen in the footage above, it takes commitment to stop the opposition. Defence is the key, yet the attack and try-scoring action is what the fans truly enjoy. To do that, it will take a huge effort by all the players and substitutes. And how that pressure will affect the team’s performance in the hot conditions of Dubai, will determine which teams meet in the Cup final on Sunday, December 8.

With the remaining teams taking away points, the series standings will be important after the Dubai Sevens tournament. Sides must keep within touch of the leaders, so for nations like Brazil, Fiji, and Japan, the more games they compete in, it will all help towards their confidence.

The series is all about confidence, and as any fan will know, a confident, performing team, is one you can bet on with confidence. After Dubai, the odds will surely be reset, as the 2019/20 series continues.
