Gloucester defeat Wasps in scrappy affair at Kingsholm

Gloucester defeat Wasps

Gloucester claimed a 27-14 victory against Wasps at Kingsholm, but it wasn’t in an aesthetically pleasing manner. A scrappy, error-strewn game killing the momentum allowed both teams to have their chances, but ultimately it was Johan Ackermann’s men who took home the spoils and saw Gloucester defeat Wasps for a third time this season.

In a first half marred by Gloucester mistakes it was the boot of Rob Miller who got the scores ticking. Slotting over a penalty to get the games first score. Gloucester couldn’t gain any momentum and struggled to keep building the phases.

Wasps well on top got the driving maul going from the lineout and carried well at first receiver to break into the 22. Following a penalty advantage Willie Le Roux sent the ball wide and Marcus Watson crossed over.

The visitors extended their lead to 11 with another Miller penalty before Gloucester struck back via Willi Heinz. A lovely run set up by Tom Marshall.

Gloucester soon took the lead when yet another sublime break from Ollie Thorley took them within a metre. A few dives for the line later it was Ruan Ackermann who dabbed it down.

Half time; Gloucester 14-11 Wasps

The second half was just as scrappy as the first and only a Billy Twelvetrees penalty was added to the score in the third quarter.

Franco Mostert was then sent to the sin bin for a shoulder charge at the ruck. Rob Miller capitalising on this by slotting over three points.

Neither side could manage a full set of phases and the game gained little momentum with the addition of substitutes.

Gloucester claimed the last laugh when following a bout of strong scrums and penalties they pushed it wide and Jake Polledri crashed over to take the bonus point away from Wasps.
