As we approach the end of 2016, we thought we would have some fun and pick a few of our favourite rugby funny moments.

Many of these moments are from 2016, but we have delved further back in history to include some classics.

Backline players should realize that should not get involved with rucks or scrums and rather stand in the safety of the backline, combing their hair. In this clip from the recent England versus Argentina Test match, Johnny May proved why this is the case.

2. Trevor Nyakane Does the Biggarena

Many comedians and bar fly comics have copied Dan Biggar’s obsessive ritual before taking a place kick. Few would have expected that Springbok prop Trevor Nyakane has such an impish sense of humour. Pat Lambie might start fearing the loss of his place kicking duties if Nyakane decides to impersonate the likes of a Dan Carter…

3. Peter Stringer Embarrasses James O’Connor

Former Ireland scrumhalf Peter Stringer shows his knowledge of rugby laws by stealing the ball off the tee when James O’Connor takes longer than the allocated 90 seconds to take a place kick. O’Connor was obviously eating into too much time of Happy Hour at Stringer’s local.

4. Will Carling Gets Man-Handled Playing Sevens

England Rugby legend Will Carling thought Sevens rugby was all about pace and finesse. Little did he know that he would be embarrassed by being out-muscled and being picked up like a rag doll.

5. Aaron Woods Celebration Fail

   We selected this one for our rugby league fans. Aaron Woods shows the world why some people should stick to a simple try celebration. Or to ensure that there is someone on the other side of your high five!

6. Andrew Hore Asks if Dan Carter is Immune to Tackles

Evidently, it is not only Bismark du Plessis who wonders if Dan Carter is allowed to play the game without fear of being tackled. Andrew Hore asked the same question of the match officials in this clip:

7. Jan Serfontein is Offered Some “Motivation”

Many have said that Springbok and Blue Bulls center Jan Serfontein needs a swift kick up the backside to get him to replicate the form he displayed as an age-group player. Maybe one of the critics should have taken the time to explain to Warrick Gelant that this is purely a figure of speech…

8. Andre Watson Not in the Top Ten Referees

Before the 2003 Rugby World Cup, referee Andre Watson took charge of a club game in Sydney to have a run out before the tournament proper. He became frustrated with the amount of banter on the field, as well as all the advice he was getting from the players. He made the simple comment: “There are too many referees on this field today”. A quick-witted player responded: “Yeah mate. And you aren’t even in my top ten.”

9. Nigel Owens Introduces Himself to Tobias Botes

While on the subject of frustrated referees we found this one by Nigel Owens, who is known for his one-liners. In a short interaction with former Italy scrumhalf Tobias Botes, he introduces himself as well as the game that is to played. Just in case Botes had forgotten.

10. Rugby’s first own try

The Television Match Official is the go to guy when the referee and his assistants are uncertain if a try is scored and rightly so as the viewing public want the right decisions to be made. No controversy. In this example, the TMO went through the entire process to determine if a try had been scored. There was no double movement and there was a fair grounding of the ball so a legit try. Except for one small problem. In his zeal to check the technicalities to get to the correct decision, he did not notice that it was a defending player who grounded the ball and not the attacking player!
