University of Otago Concussion Study in Rugby

In a ground-breaking concussion study by the University of Otago, researchers have been given an opportunity to get inside the heads of Otago rugby players.

Dr. Danielle Salmon, from the Otago University School of Physical Education and Exercise Sciences and her team place small ‘acceleromitors’ behind the ear of players to measure the force and gravity of tackle impact. With support from New Zealand Rugby and now, World Rugby, the hope is to understand better the forces involved and how better to understand player health and welfare.

With concussions and their effects on players being such a huge topic across all sports today, we at LWOS applaud Dr. Salmon and her team.  Their ground breaking work can only help improve player health and safety in rugby, and perhaps all sports, going forward. Reducing the severity of injuries and preventing them all together is something that all teams and leagues should be looking into going forward.

The video describes the interesting methods and technology being used, as well as what the University of Otago researchers hope to achieve with this new study.

More information on the study can be found on the university’s website, here.
