You must travel hundreds of miles for low money and sometimes minimum opportunities, your chances of working in other territories are slim, especially if you\u2019re from Puerto Rico. Imagine being on a 100 x 35 island with only a handful of good promotions that put regular shows every month and that those promotions ask you for exclusivity. Even more, that a category 4 Hurricane devastate the whole island and you\u2019re left with nothing to work with.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the reality that most Puerto Rican wrestler are facing in the island. Since the passing of Hurricane Maria, wrestling promotions like <strong>World Wrestling League<\/strong>, <strong>World Wrestling Council<\/strong> and <strong>Championship Wrestling School<\/strong> \u2013 the latter one has officially folded till 2018 \u2013 have yet to re-open.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9815\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9815\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9815\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/11\/18557210_1849990898559034_4192992678022300962_n-e1511364174311.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Puerto Rico&#8217;s Mike Mendoza<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Is because of those reasons that <strong>Cleveland Knights Championship Wrestling (CKCW)<\/strong>\u00a0comes in the best of times. In that show \u2013 on\u00a0November 11\u00a0\u2013 CKCW announced their new co-owner, non-other that <strong>WCW<\/strong> and <strong>WWE<\/strong> legend <strong>Eric Bischoff<\/strong>. This sparked a lot of buzz in social media, with many acclaiming that announcement with a tweet that Bischoff posted soon after saying, \u201cGame just changed\u201d. Many started to link this tweet to a similar tweet by <strong>Hulk Hogan<\/strong> where it was presented as if Bischoff and Hogan were linking to create an alternative WCW with CKCW.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/EBischoff\/status\/929461499172655106<\/p>\n<p>In later days, those rumors were debunked by Bischoff himself and the owner of CKCW, but the promotion was exposed to great numbers of people. Even tough Bischoff is booked as an authority figure, the promotion now has a buzz around them and their talents will benefit from it. Talking about talents, that list includes Puerto Ricans standouts <strong>Mike Mendoza<\/strong>, <strong>Angel Fashion<\/strong>, <strong>OT Fernandez<\/strong>, <strong>BJ<\/strong>, <strong>Vanilla Vargas<\/strong> (she\u2019s their Women\u2019s Champion), <strong>Hiram Tua<\/strong>, <strong>Ring of Honor<\/strong> wrestler <strong>Shane Taylor<\/strong>, Ohio veteran <strong>J-Rocc,<\/strong> among others.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9816\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9816\" style=\"width: 333px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9816\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/11\/18892909_1856067384618052_314495876077988156_n-e1511364106421.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"600\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9816\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vanilla Vargas, CKCW Women&#8217;s Champion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When asked about him preferring some Puerto Rican wrestlers in their shows, Melissa Martinez told me, <em>\u201cWhen you see guys like BJ, Fashion, Star Roger, Mendoza on TV, you can see the charismas just coming out of the TV.\u00a0 Plus, they are willing to work hard to help us grow,\u00a0as of right now the guy who has impressed the area the most is Angel Fashion for some reason he has everyone eating out of their hands.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It seems that CKCW has become a gateway for many Puerto Rican wrestlers that don\u2019t have the chance to be booked outside of the island. The promotion has gone from having just 12 people on a show in June to have a sold out in their past weekend.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9817\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9817\" style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9817\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/11\/19511301_1866680216890102_5874942107891828919_n-e1511364143764.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"600\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9817\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Star Roger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Guys like <strong>Starr Roger<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/2017\/06\/16\/how-star-roger-is-getting-out-of-the-shadow-of-carlos-colon\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who rides one of the best championship<\/a> reigns in a long time in Puerto Rico has been able to show his skills in front of a different atmosphere and other great indie workers like <strong>DJZ<\/strong> and <strong>Robbie E<\/strong>. Angel Fashion, who doesn\u2019t present himself as a wrestler with an athletic move set as Mike Mendoza or natural skill set like Vanilla Vargas, can show his great charisma and way to get heat.<\/p>\n<p>Even veterans like Hiram Tua, who has over 10 years of experience and is a former <strong>IWA (Puerto Rico) World Heavyweight Champion<\/strong> and <strong>WWL Champion<\/strong>, is getting a second chance to show his skills. \u201c<em>Hiram Tua and Fashion are really connecting with the crowds here in Cleveland, I expect big things from these guys\u201d<\/em>, said CKCW owner Melissa Martinez.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9819\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9819\" style=\"width: 398px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9819\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/11\/15135909_1348144661863636_3629712325399469170_n-e1511364267117.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"600\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hiram Tua (Photo: WWL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It really feels that that the Ohio base promotion is a second home for Puerto Rican wrestlers, especially in these tough times, were resources in the island are short, electrical power just hit 50% after 60 days of Hurricane Maria and people are fleeing from this chaos.\u00a0 We can only hope that we keep seeing growth in the promotion for 2018.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested on going to a show for CKCW, their next show\u2013 the one with Eric Bischoff &#8211;\u00a0 is on February 9<sup>th<\/sup> in Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getting notice in the international wrestling scene is hard.
