The event celebrates the anniversary of IMPACT Wrestling&#8217;s (formerly known as <strong>TNA<\/strong> <strong>Wrestling<\/strong>) first event in June of 2002. This year&#8217;s event is promising to change the landscape of the promotion. Let&#8217;s take a look back at some notable main event matches and surprises from <em>Slammiversary&#8217;s<\/em> past.<\/p>\n<h2>Slammiversary 2004<\/h2>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lScPvBHZNak<\/p>\n<p>Although not promoted under the\u00a0 <em>Slammiversary\u00a0<\/em>name, the event celebrated the two-year anniversary of TNA Wrestling. The event featured two marquee matches from wrestlers that became staples of TNA Wrestling.<strong> A.J<\/strong>. <strong>Styles\u00a0<\/strong>defended his X-Division Title in a match against <strong>Jeff<\/strong> <strong>Hardy<\/strong>. This was Hardy&#8217;s debut in the promotion and was a surprise opponent for Styles. The match ended in a no-contest when <strong>Kid Kash<\/strong> and <strong>Dallas<\/strong> (AKA <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2020\/03\/11\/lance-archer-jake-roberts-aew\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Lance<\/strong> <strong>Archer<\/strong><\/a>) interfered in the match attacking both men.<\/p>\n<p>The main event of the show featured <strong>Jeff Jarrett<\/strong> against <strong>Ron<\/strong> <strong>&#8220;The Truth&#8221; Killings<\/strong> (AKA <strong>R-Truth<\/strong>) for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Jarrett captured the title from Killings in the first-ever <em>King of the Mountain\u00a0<\/em>match at NWA-TNA PPV #97. Killings got his one on one rematch under the stipulation that if Jarrett was disqualified he would lose the title. The match ended in a no contest allowing Jarrett to retain his title.<\/p>\n<h2>King of the Mountain<\/h2>\n<p>TNA\/IMPACT Wrestling often featured a specialty match at <em>Slammiversary.\u00a0<\/em>The\u00a0<em>King of the Mountain\u00a0<\/em>match, a TNA original match. The match requires wrestlers to climb a ladder to retrieve a title belt to win the match. TNA added a twist to the traditional ladder match in that you must score a pinfall or submission to be eligible to climb the ladder. Wrestlers that are pinned or submitted spend two minutes in a penalty box-like cage, putting them at a disadvantage. Let&#8217;s look at some notable <em>Slammiversary King of the Mountain <\/em>matches.<\/p>\n<h3>Slammiversary 2005<\/h3>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e2dJ3p_jUqA<\/p>\n<p>The first event promoted under the <em>Slammiversary<\/em> name was main evented by a <em>King of the Mountain<\/em> match. A.J. Styles entered the match as the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. <strong>Abyss<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1654616\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Monty<\/strong> <strong>Brown<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Sean<\/strong> <strong>Waltman<\/strong>, and <strong>Raven<\/strong> all challenged Styles in the match. Raven won the match after pinning Styles in the second fall of the match to be eligible to climb the ladder. He took the first pinfall of the match from Monty Brown and bounced back to capture the title.<\/p>\n<p>Raven was suspended in the lead-up to the match for putting his hands on <strong>Larry<\/strong> <strong>Zbyszko <\/strong>for not making him a wild card entrant into the <em>King of the Mountain<\/em> match. Raven was suspended and quit TNA Wrestling before returning to enter the <em>King of the Mountain<\/em> match. This was Raven&#8217;s first and only<em> King of the Mountain<\/em> victory and NWA World Heavyweight Championship run.<\/p>\n<h3>Slammiversary 2007<\/h3>\n<p>The main event for the 2007 edition of <em>Slammiversary\u00a0<\/em>featured a\u00a0<em>King of the Mountain\u00a0<\/em>match for the inaugural TNA World Heavyweight Championship. <strong>Kurt<\/strong> <strong>Angle<\/strong>, <strong>Samoa<\/strong> <strong>Joe<\/strong>,\u00a0A.J. Styles,\u00a0<strong>Christian<\/strong> <strong>Cage<\/strong>,\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Chris<\/strong> <strong>Harris\u00a0<\/strong>all competed to be the first TNA World Heavyweight Champion. Only Harris, Angle, and Cage scored a fall to be eligible to climb the ladder and capture the title. Kurt Angle then climbed the ladder and pulled down the title becoming the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Impact_World_Championship#:~:text=The%20inaugural%20champion%20was%20Kurt%20Angle%2C%20who%20won%20the%20championship,the%20most%20reigns%2C%20at%20six.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inaugural TNA World Heavyweight Champion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Angle went on to win the <em>King of the Mountain<\/em> match again at\u00a0<em>Slammiversary\u00a0<\/em>2009. He won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship six times total in his career and became a cornerstone of the promotion through the 2000s and 2010s.<\/p>\n<h3>Slammiversary 2015<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jeff Jarrett Returns To Enter One Last Match..#Slammiversary (Jun 24, 2015)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hEvjWQnerFM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The 2015 edition of <em>Slammiversary\u00a0<\/em>reactivated the King of the Mountain Title. The title had been renamed a few times being introduced as the Legends Championship in 2008. <strong>Eric<\/strong> <strong>Young\u00a0<\/strong>renamed the title the TNA Global Championship on the October 29, 2009 edition of TNA Impact!. The title was then renamed again in December of 2010 to TNA Television Title. Abyss won the television title at <em>Slammiversary <\/em><em>XI<\/em> however, the title was not defended or mentioned during his reign. \u00a0TNA Executive Director Kurt Angle declared the tile deactivated on July 3, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The title was reactivated and named the King of the Mountain Title for <em>Slamiversary 2015<\/em>. This marked the first time the King of the Mountain match would be held since <em>Slammiversary\u00a0<\/em>2009. TNA founder Jeff Jarrett made a surprise return to IMPACT on the June 24th episode where he announced the match and his participation in it. <strong>Bobby<\/strong> <strong>Roode<\/strong>, <strong>Matt Hardy<\/strong>, Eric Young, and <strong>Drew<\/strong> <strong>Galloway <\/strong>(AKA <strong>Drew McIntyre<\/strong>). Jarrett won the match and held the title for 29 days before vacating it to become the TNA general manager. The title was retired in 2016 with Lashley being the last man to hold the belt.<\/p>\n<h2>IMPACT Slammiversary 2017<\/h2>\n<p><em>Slammiversary 2017\u00a0<\/em>was billed under the title of\u00a0<em>Slammiversary XV\u00a0<\/em>and celebrated 15 years of IMPACT Wrestling. In the lead-up to the event, <strong>Karen<\/strong> <strong>Angle<\/strong> announced the merger IMPACT Wrestling with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2017\/09\/06\/the-story-so-far-the-global-force-wrestling-anthem-situation\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Global Force Wrestling<\/strong><\/a>. <strong>Alberto El Patr\u00f3n<\/strong> represented <strong>Global Force Wrestling<\/strong> against Lashley in the main event of the show that unified the titles. Alberto defeated Lashley in the main event and unified the IMPACT Wrestling World Heavyweight and GFW Global Championships. He defeated <strong>Magnus<\/strong> on IMPACT a couple of months prior to become the GFW champion, earning the right to face Lashley and unify the belts. Jeff Jarrett left IMPACT a few months after <em>Slammiversary<\/em> and resumed running shows under the GFW at the end of 2017. This caused IMPACT to drop the GFW name, ending the merger between the two companies.<\/p>\n<h2>IMPACT Wrestling Slammiversary 2020<\/h2>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uZe_M9R6gqk<\/p>\n<p>IMPACT Wrestling promised that\u00a0<em>Slammiversary 2020\u00a0<\/em>would change the landscape of the promotion. They delivered as the promotion saw the return of former stars in the promotion, and multiple title changes take place. The first match saw <strong>The Motor City Machine Guns\u00a0<\/strong>return to answer the call put out by <strong>The Rascalz<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2021\/05\/29\/deonna-purrazzo-wrestlings-top-stars-one-year\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Deonna<\/strong> <strong>Purrazzo<\/strong> <\/a>also returned to IMPACT earlier in the year and defeated <strong>Jordynne<\/strong> <strong>Grace<\/strong> for the Knockouts Championship during the event.<\/p>\n<p>The main event promised a surprise return as <strong>Eddie<\/strong> <strong>Edwards<\/strong>, <strong>Ace<\/strong> <strong>Austin<\/strong>, and <strong>Trey<\/strong> <strong>Miguel<\/strong> awaited the mystery fourth person to compete for the vacant IMPACT World Championship. <strong>Rich<\/strong> <strong>Swann<\/strong> answered the call making his return to the ring after suffering a knee injury, declaring his spot in the match. The match quickly became a five-way match as <strong>Eric Young<\/strong> made his return to the promotion and entered himself in the match. Eddie Edwards walked out of\u00a0<em>Slammiversary\u00a0<\/em>as the champion, but the surprises were not over yet. Just as the show was about to go off the air a vignette teasing the return of <strong>EC3<\/strong> aired.<\/p>\n<h2>Looking Ahead to IMPACT Slammiversary 2021<\/h2>\n<p>IMPACT Wrestling is once again promising a change in the landscape for this year&#8217;s <em>Slammiversary<\/em>. <strong>Kenny Omega\u00a0<\/strong>will defend the IMPACT World title against <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2021\/06\/17\/don-callis-fired-impact-wrestling-tommy-dreamer\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Sami<\/strong> <strong>Callihan<\/strong><\/a> in the main event of the show. Deonna Purrazzo will also defend her title against a mystery opponent.
