{"id":8697,"date":"2017-10-18T12:56:25","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T16:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/?p=8697"},"modified":"2020-09-04T13:30:55","modified_gmt":"2020-09-04T17:30:55","slug":"tim-storm-nwa-world-champion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2017\/10\/18\/tim-storm-nwa-world-champion\/","title":{"rendered":"Tim Storm: The NWA World Heavyweight Champion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the building buzz of <strong>Smashing Pumpkins<\/strong> frontman <strong>Billy Corgan<\/strong> taking over ownership of the prestigious <strong>National Wrestling Alliance (NWA)<\/strong> on October 1st, alongside former WWE and Impact Wrestling\u00a0Creative member <strong>Dave Lagana<\/strong>, there were plenty of questions about the titles of the NWA. The most concerning was that of the NWA World Heavyweight Championship &#8211; after all, at one time this was the world&#8217;s most prestigious World title, with a lineage dating all the way back to 1948, when <strong>Orville Brown<\/strong> was crowned the inaugural NWA World Champion after beating <strong>Sonny Myers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8698\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8698\" style=\"width: 417px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8698\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/tumblr_nf6v6bgIdW1ru3vzto1_500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"417\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/tumblr_nf6v6bgIdW1ru3vzto1_500.png 417w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/tumblr_nf6v6bgIdW1ru3vzto1_500-223x300.png 223w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/tumblr_nf6v6bgIdW1ru3vzto1_500-313x420.png 313w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Orville Brown, the 1st NWA World Champion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Throughout the proceeding decades, it became the belt of honour held by such legends as <strong>Lou Thesz, Harley Race, Dory Funk Jr., Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair<\/strong>, and many, many more. But following <strong>WCW<\/strong>&#8216;s withdrawal from the NWA in 1993, the tarnish began to lose it&#8217;s luster &#8211; between WCW and the <strong>WWF<\/strong>, most of the strongest NWA territories had been absorbed or dried up. In 1994, when a tournament was designed to re-establish the title and crown a new champion, the winner, <strong>Shane Douglas<\/strong>, proceeded to throw down the title and the NWA territory he represented, <strong>Eastern Championship Wrestling (ECW)<\/strong> announced it&#8217;s withdrawal and rebranding as <strong>Extreme Championship Wrestling<\/strong> in one of the industry&#8217;s most infamous promos.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8702\" style=\"width: 362px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8702\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/846abacbfb93d7dbd326e7fb17f49c1c-ric-flair-chic.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Storm\" width=\"362\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/846abacbfb93d7dbd326e7fb17f49c1c-ric-flair-chic.jpg 546w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/846abacbfb93d7dbd326e7fb17f49c1c-ric-flair-chic-275x300.jpg 275w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/846abacbfb93d7dbd326e7fb17f49c1c-ric-flair-chic-385x420.jpg 385w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">9x NWA World Champion, &#8220;Nature Boy&#8221; Ric Flair<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The NWA tried to build back, first with a short lived association with the WWF in the early stages of the Attitude Era&#8217;s prologue, and then working with upstart TNA (now <strong>Impact Wrestling<\/strong>) in it&#8217;s formative years, but the NWA never managed to reach the same level of tradition, influence or prestige as it had for the over 50 years previously. Following their departure from the TNA alliance in 2007, many great wrestlers have held the NWA World title, including <strong>Colt Cabana, Sabu, Adam Pierce<\/strong>, and<strong> Hiroyoshi Tenzan<\/strong>, but the NWA&#8217;s name has largely fallen out of the on-going narrative of today&#8217;s pro wrestling industry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8701\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8701\" style=\"width: 272px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8701\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/untitled-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/untitled-1.png 272w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/untitled-1-232x300.png 232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 272px) 100vw, 272px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8701\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colt Cabana as NWA World Champion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The current NWA World Champion is most likely one of the least recognizable names of the past 15 years to hold the title. And perhaps one of the most unlikely. It&#8217;s currently being worn around the waist of 52-year old <strong>Tim Storm<\/strong>, a 20-year veteran of the industry who, like WWE Hall of Famer <strong>Diamond Dallas Page<\/strong>, didn&#8217;t even enter the ring until his 30s. &#8220;Tim has all the characteristics of the prototype NWA champion,&#8221; said\u00a0former NWA\u00a0Director <strong>James\u00a0Beard<\/strong> in <a href=\"http:\/\/slam.canoe.com\/Slam\/Wrestling\/2016\/11\/30\/22686892.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an interview with\u00a0Slam Sports <\/a>back in 2016.\u00a0&#8220;And I believe whenever he is done, no matter how long he remains on top, his legacy will be that he represented the NWA in the traditions of the men that preceded him and did so with honor and a style that makes his time as champion fitting to have his name among that elite group of wrestlers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8699\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8699\" style=\"width: 289px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8699 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/storm_tharpe.jpg\" alt=\"Tom Storm\" width=\"289\" height=\"515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/storm_tharpe.jpg 289w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/storm_tharpe-168x300.jpg 168w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/storm_tharpe-236x420.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8699\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tim Storm, NWA World Champion (Photo: NWA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Storm himself grew up an NWA fan, being in close proximity to many of the NWA&#8217;s top territories, such as <strong>Mid-South<\/strong>, <strong>Georgia Championship Wrestling<\/strong> and others. &#8220;This truly is my mountain top,&#8221; Storm told James Walsh recently on <a href=\"http:\/\/wrestlingepicenter.com\/IWR\/interviews\/TimStorm102017.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Interactive\u00a0Wrestling Radio<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;I grew up an NWA fan. I was very fortunate being in the area of the United States that I was that I got a lot of wrestling every weekend. But, the NWA was where it was at for me. I still look at that as the best time in wrestling history. I know there are a lot of great eras and a lot of the younger people would see other eras as the thing that drew them in. In 2007, he made a brief appearance in the WWE&#8217;s rebooted ECW brand, losing to <strong>Big Daddy V<\/strong> on TV. But following PCW&#8217;s demise, Storm began to work around the various remaining NWA affiliates, such as <strong>NWA Texoma<\/strong> and <strong>Elite Championship Wrestling<\/strong> amongst others.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Storm made his debut with <strong>Championship Wrestling From Hollywood (CWFH)<\/strong>, carrying the NWA World Championship he won almost a year ago from <strong>Jax Dane<\/strong>.
