both <strong>Snoop Dogg<\/strong> and<strong> Mike Tyson<\/strong> getting physical in-ring, and now the latest teasing by <strong>Paul Wight<\/strong> of a<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2021\/03\/06\/aew-revolution-3-7-21-predictions\/\" target=\"_self\"> Hall of Fame worthy debutant<\/a> arriving at <em><strong>AEW Revolution<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Many have drawn comparisons to the lunacy of late-stage<strong> WCW<\/strong>, where celebrities and elder talent ran amok whilst the full-time card was shunned and pushed aside.\u00a0 This comparison to WCW is something worth pondering for AEW management, but it is not currently a problem.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s explore why.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Veterans in AEW Have Mostly Been Supporting Members of the Roster<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"391\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76563\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/09\/Sonny-Kiss-Dustin-Rhodes.jpg\" alt=\"AEW\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/09\/Sonny-Kiss-Dustin-Rhodes.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/09\/Sonny-Kiss-Dustin-Rhodes-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whereas it can (and certainly has) been claimed AEW is at the mercy of its older talent, this could not be further from the truth.\u00a0 Sure,<strong> Chris Jericho<\/strong> was the first-ever AEW World Champion at the grand age of 48, but this was a necessary decision to ensure some name recognition and to get some eyes on AEW&#8217;s product from the very beginning.\u00a0 AEW has a plan, a long-term plan which involves some tremendously talented young workers (more on them later).\u00a0 The fact that Jericho was a World Champion at his age does not lessen this fact.\u00a0 Additionally, roster members of a similar age have played the role of supporting cast members; veterans often used sporadically, either to give less recognizable names a rub or to put them over in-ring.\u00a0<strong> Dustin Rhodes<\/strong> and <strong>Billy Gunn<\/strong> are two workers with name recognition who have put over younger names.\u00a0 <strong>Tully Blanchard<\/strong>, <strong>Arn Anderson<\/strong>, <strong>Taz,<\/strong> and <strong>Jake &#8220;The Snake&#8221; Roberts<\/strong> have effectively acted as coaches and mentors to full-time workers in need of some assistance.\u00a0 There is no problem with AEW&#8217;s veteran usage.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>There is a Bright Future Ahead\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-84566\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/02\/Jade-Cargill-AEW.jpg\" alt=\"AEW\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/02\/Jade-Cargill-AEW.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/02\/Jade-Cargill-AEW-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the things AEW most deserves credit for is its development of young talent.\u00a0 <strong>Darby Allin<\/strong>, <strong>Sammy Guevara<\/strong>, <strong>Jungle Boy<\/strong>,<strong> Anna Jay<\/strong>, <strong>Riho<\/strong>, <strong>Isiah Kassidy<\/strong>,<strong> Marko Stunt,<\/strong> and more were virtual unknowns before appearing weekly on <strong>AEW Dynamite<\/strong> and<strong> Dark<\/strong>.\u00a0 All of them are either currently under the age of 25 or were under the age of 25 before signing with the company.\u00a0 This is a proven commendable effort by AEW to develop its own young stars.\u00a0 Then there are the likes of <strong>Adam Page<\/strong> and<strong> MJF<\/strong>; two other stars under the age of 30 (MJF is <em>still<\/em> only 24) who gained recognition before signing with AEW and have gone from strength-to-strength to develop further, with both now certain future world champions.\u00a0 As seen just this week,<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2021\/02\/08\/jade-cargill-aew\/\" target=\"_self\"> <strong>Jade Cargill<\/strong><\/a>, especially, has the potential to be a <em>big<\/em> star for All Elite Wrestling.\u00a0 This is a young and talented roster and it isn&#8217;t being squandered with AEW&#8217;s use of celebrities and veterans.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>International Development<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-71685\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/riho-0.jpg\" alt=\"Riho\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/riho-0.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/riho-0-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another polarizing decision by AEW has been their opting to use so many young Japanese talent, particularly Joshi talent (Japanese female professional wrestlers).\u00a0 This decision is not one that should be as polarizing as it is.\u00a0 Frankly, AEW is using so many Joshi talents because of just how good they are.\u00a0 Many of them are young, hungry competitors capable of wowing audiences (<strong>Riho<\/strong>) and becoming excellent, worthy characters despite any language barrier (<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2021\/02\/10\/joshi-watch-maki-itoh\/\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Maki Itoh<\/strong><\/a>).\u00a0 This is also helping AEW develop internationally, with the company already recognizable in Japan with thanks to <strong>Kenny Omega<\/strong> being a most beloved former IWGP Heavyweight Champion.\u00a0 Over time, there is no doubt AEW will continue to expand into other markets, such as the UK, China, and more.\u00a0 There is room for improvement here, however, as talent at the level of <strong>Pentagon Jr<\/strong> and<strong> Rey Fenix<\/strong> should be in a much better position than they have been since debuting.\u00a0 They are simply too good to be stuck in the mid-card for life.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Celebrity Involvement is Not Problematic for AEW&#8230; Yet<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"334\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-68690\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-DoN.jpg\" alt=\"Double Or Nothing\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-DoN.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-DoN-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So far, the celebrity involvement in AEW has not been a problem.\u00a0 In fact, credit must be given for the sheer caliber of celebrity they have attracted at such a young age.\u00a0 Shaq, Mike Tyson, and Snoop Dogg are each big parts of American pop culture.\u00a0 Yes, they are older celebrities, but they each maintain relevance even now.\u00a0 Additionally, their cameos have been fun.\u00a0 Snoop Dogg performing whatever <em>that<\/em> splash was made for hilariously entertaining viewing.\u00a0 Shaq had a match far better than it had any right to be this week, with he and Jade Cargill each drawing acclaim for what was a highly impressive debut for them against<strong> Cody<\/strong> and<strong> Red Velvet<\/strong>.\u00a0 There is the potential for celebrity involvements becoming increasingly problematic in the future, should they persist more often than they should.\u00a0 But right now, they are managing this aspect just right.\u00a0 The celebrities are there to appear in small, sporadic doses to boost ratings and with Shaq appearing in a match which drew over 1.1 million viewers this week, it appears to be working.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34803\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/01\/tony-khan-aew-696x392-e1547090215290.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>All Elite Wrestling is not flawless.\u00a0 There has never been a perfect wrestling show and there never will be.\u00a0 Some may argue that it is far from perfect.\u00a0 However, it cannot be argued that <strong>Tony Khan<\/strong> and company are doing a very good job at developing a future with the assistance of a classy bunch of veterans; are building upon ratings (even despite the pandemic) with the assistance of pop culture icons; are working towards becoming recognizable overseas and are continuously attempting to sign big named free agents who may bring something extra to the show (<strong>Jon Moxley<\/strong> being a standout example).\u00a0 It is hard to say for sure what lies in store for <em>AEW Revolution<\/em> this Sunday and it is impossible to predict the teased Hall of Fame worthy talent.\u00a0 One thing is for certain: right now, AEW is heading in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p><em>Stay tuned to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/\" target=\"_self\">Last Word on Pro Wrestling<\/a>\u00a0for more on this and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
