On Friday night, Cauliflower Alley announced that 1960s and 1970s National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) star Buddy Colt had passed away at the age of 81.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of the legendary Buddy Colt at the age of 81 years old. We send our sincerest condolences to his wife Lorraine, his two daughters, friends &amp; fans the world over. R.I.P. Buddy, with love &amp; respect you will be missed. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LSPSyUlvCA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/LSPSyUlvCA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Cauliflower Alley Club (@CACReunion) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CACReunion\/status\/1367948678623805440?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March 5, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>A student of <strong>&#8220;Killer&#8221; Karl Krupp<\/strong>, Buddy Colt made his pro wrestling debut in 1962 in <strong>Nick Gulas<\/strong> and <strong>Bob Welch<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>NWA Mid-America<\/strong> in the Tennessee region, beginning under the named <strong>&#8220;Cowboy&#8221; <\/strong><strong>Ron Reed<\/strong>. Aside from NWA Mid-America, he also worked <strong>St. Louis Wrestling Club<\/strong>, before heading to the West Coast to work for the <strong>World Wrestling Alliance (WWA)<\/strong>, where he was renamed <strong>Ty Colt<\/strong>. In 1969, he renamed to Buddy Colt working <strong>NWA Western States<\/strong>, the Amarillo, Texas promotion run by the Funk family, where he quickly won the NWA North American Heavyweight Championship.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d2XTzYo4Wu0\" width=\"536\" height=\"402\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Colt had become a touring star in multiple territories, including <strong>NWA Tri-States<\/strong> (later Mid-South), <strong>Georgia Championship Wrestling, NWA Central States, NWA Mid-Atlantic<\/strong>, and others, but in 1972, he became a fixture with <strong>Championship Wrestling in Florida<\/strong>. By 1974, he was one of the NWA&#8217;s most decorated champions &#8211; 6x NWA Georgia Heavyweight Champion, 4x NWA Florida Heavyweight Champion, 5x NWA Florida Southern Heavyweight Champion, 4x NWA Columbus Heavyweight Champion, and many more.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"N.W.A. Buddy Colt was a licensed pilot, and that night he piloted a Cessna plane for the other heels in his traveling troupe, including <strong>Austin Idol, Gary Hart<\/strong>, and<strong> Bobby Shane<\/strong> in Florida. But the plane got in dark weather and the plane crashed into the waters before making it to Tampa. Bobby Shane drowned in the crash, while the remaining three suffered serious injuries. Austin Idol and Gary Hart would recover and become major stars in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but a serious ankle injury to Buddy Colt &#8211; real name Ron Read &#8211; would end his in-ring wrestling career. \u201cI had to wear a steel brace, completely shattered my right ankle,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abcactionnews.com\/news\/region-hillsborough\/wrestling-legend-buddy-colt-opens-up-about-deadly-plane-crash-embracing-villain-role\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read recalled to ABC Action News<\/a> back in 2019. \u201cI wrestled three matches after [the crash] all tag-team matches, and I did very little. I realized pretty quickly that I couldn\u2019t perform [in the ring] any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D4p8-b3kk9k<\/p>\n<p>He would remain in the wrestling industry after his in-ring career ended, first as a manager for stars who needed a mouthpiece, such as <strong>Abdullah the Butcher<\/strong> and <strong>Larry &#8220;The Ax&#8221; Hennig<\/strong>, before joining the commentary table, where he joined Gordon Solie as the color commentator for Championship Wrestling From Florida.<\/p>\n<p>LWOPW sends its condolences to the Read family as well as Buddy&#8217;s friends, peers, and fans around the world.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ron &quot;Buddy Colt&quot; Reed passed away.  He was a badass heel in the 70s, saw him in plenty of great matches with the likes of Hodge, Brisco and so many others.
