{"id":83935,"date":"2021-01-29T14:00:49","date_gmt":"2021-01-29T19:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/?p=83935"},"modified":"2021-01-28T22:26:28","modified_gmt":"2021-01-29T03:26:28","slug":"aj-styles-five-years-wwe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2021\/01\/29\/aj-styles-five-years-wwe\/","title":{"rendered":"AJ Styles: Five Years in the WWE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The Phenomenal&#8221;\u00a0<strong>AJ Styles<\/strong> is entering his fifth year as a member of the WWE main roster. <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After weeks of speculation after a classic at <strong>New Japan Pro Wrestling&#8217;s <\/strong><\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrestle Kingdom 10<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> versus then-IWGP Intercontinental Champion, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shinsuke Nakamura<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the weeks leading up to the <em><strong>Royal Rumble<\/strong><\/em> was the age-old question of &#8220;will he, won&#8217;t he?&#8221;<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On January 24th, 2016, AJ Styles surprised the world, entering the <\/span><em>Royal Rumble<\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> match as the third participant. He would go head to head with the WWE Champion at the time, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Roman Reigns<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/FightfulWrestle\/status\/1353383756552396805?s=20<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Humble Beginnings:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As mentioned, Styles <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2021\/01\/24\/5-years-later-aj-styles-2016-royal-rumble\/\" target=\"_self\">entered the <em>Royal Rumble<\/em><\/a> match in a familiar city, Orlando, FL at the Amway Center. The Gainesville, GA native would last nearly 30 minutes (28:58) before being eliminated by <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kevin Owens<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Despite only scoring two eliminations, Styles had arrived! <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Styles would go on to have his first rivalry with <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chris Jericho,<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> as they both would trade victories against each other. They would wrestle at the likes of <\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fastlane<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, even team with each other briefly against then-WWE Tag Team Champions <strong>The <\/strong><\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New Day.<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Styles and Jericho would have their <\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WrestleMania<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> match to end their feud, which Styles ultimately lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <em><strong>RAW<\/strong><\/em> after <em>WrestleMania<\/em> would spark a breakout run for AJ Styles, who was already a highly regarded professional wrestler around the world by this point. Styles would win the number one contender&#8217;s fatal four-way match to earn a shot at then-WWE Champion, Reigns. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After two unsuccessful opportunities against the &#8220;Big Dog,&#8221; Styles&#8217; next target was the biggest fish in the pond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/WrestleOps\/status\/1353027550440779777?s=20<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the Memorial Day 2016 (May 30th) edition of <em><strong>Monday Night Raw<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">John Cena<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> would make his return to the WWE for the first time since <em>WrestleMania<\/em>, and the Green Bay, WI crowd would wake up as Cena would face off against Styles in the ring. The two would face off in singles and tag matches, with Styles winning at both <em><strong>Money in the Bank<\/strong><\/em> and <\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SummerSlam<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Styles was drafted fourth overall, as the second pick for the <\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SmackDown<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> brand in the 2016 Draft, and would challenge then-WWE Champion, Dean Ambrose at <\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Backlash<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. After a low blow, Styles would win the WWE Championship for the first time becoming the 48th WWE Champion in history. He would hold the WWE Championship for 140 days, losing the title to Cena at the 2017 <em>Royal Rumble<\/em>. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Styles would stay in the title picture throughout the <\/span>Road to <em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WrestleMania<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, ultimately losing at\u00a0<\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Elimination Chamber<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and on\u00a0<\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SmackDown<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The House that AJ Styles Built: Styles&#8217; Year of Dominance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A rivalry with then-Smackdown Commissioner, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shane McMahon<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> lead to a match at <\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WrestleMania 33<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Styles would then shift his focus onto the United States Champion, Kevin Owens. Styles would win the title off of &#8220;The Prizefighter&#8221; twice, once at a WWE Live event at Madison Square Garden,\u00a0 and on a <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Smackdown <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">episode (July 25, 2017) involving a returning Chris Jericho. Styles would hold the title until <em><strong>Hell in a Cell<\/strong><\/em> losing the title to\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Baron Corbin<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in a triple-threat match also involving <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tye Dillinger<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43060 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2019\/03\/AJ-Styles-WWE-Champion-e1554244173503.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Styles would then take his aim at &#8220;The Modern Day Maharaja,&#8221; and then-WWE Champion, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jinder Mahal<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Styles would win his second WWE Championship on the November 7th edition of\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SmackDown Live<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> from Manchester, England. With this win, Styles would become the first champion to have won the title outside of North America. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He would hold the WWE Championship for 371 days, defending against the likes of Owens, Cena, Corbin, Nakamura,\u00a0 <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sami Zayn<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0 <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dolph Ziggler<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Samoa Joe<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Styles would lose the title to <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Daniel Bryan, <\/span><\/strong>on the go-home edition of <em>SmackDown <\/em>before the 2018 <strong><em>Survivor Series<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>AJ Styles, Mr. Reliable:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Styles would compete in various rivalries throughout the next few years, switching brands a few times from <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SmackDown to Raw<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. He would feud against the likes of\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Randy Orton<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, then-WWE Universal Champion, Seth Rollins, and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ricochet. <\/span><\/strong>Against the &#8220;One and Only,&#8221; Styles would again win the United States Championship<strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> holding it for 134 days. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He would enter his second Royal Rumble match four years after his debut, only to get eliminated by a returning <strong>Edge<\/strong>. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Styles would feud against\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Undertaker<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at\u00a0<\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WrestleMania 36<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in what would be &#8220;The Phenom&#8217;s&#8221; last match in WWE (as of this publication). Styles would also win his first Intercontinental Championship via a tournament, defeating Daniel Bryan and holding the title for 70 days. He would ultimately lose it to longtime rival, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jeff Hardy<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After flirting with <em>SmackDown<\/em> during his Intercontinental title run, Styles would return back to RAW and have a brief program with current-WWE Champion, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Drew McIntyre.<\/span><\/strong> They would clash<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at\u00a0<\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs 2020<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, with Styles ultimately failing to win the WWE Championship a third time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Future:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Where does AJ Styles go from here? At age 43, Styles is at a crossroads of his career.\u00a0 Where does Styles find himself in the latter part of his career and what&#8217;s next as he enter year number six in the WWE?
