The island had one of the hottest wrestling territories in late 70s and the 80s, and even in the 2000s, having a soar in the wrestling industry with the fame rivalry between <b>International Wrestling Association<\/b> and <b>World Wrestling<\/b> <strong>Council.<\/strong> Drawing big crowds in baseball stadiums, bringing the best workers of the United States territories \u2013 and Canada-, also being accredited for innovating and even creating the deathmatch revolution that followed in the 1990s, Puerto Rico\u2019s wrestling history will be forever printed in the books of the business.<\/p>\n<p>But \u2013 What about the workers that came from the island? Few is known about the island\u2019s best wrestlers. There\u2019s always mentions about <b>Carlos Colon<\/b> run in Puerto Rico or a little spit by <b>WWE<\/b> about <b>Pedro Morales<\/b> as <b>WWWF Champion<\/b>, but very little is known about the greatest workers in Puerto Rican history. That\u2019s why, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Last Word on Pro Wrestling brings you a 2-part list about the top 10 greatest Puerto Rican wrestlers of All-Time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8147\" src=\"http:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/eabcff58b00c938b323bd725d7666791-e1506982687129.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"513\"><\/p>\n<p><b>10<\/b>. <b>Hercules<\/b> <b>Ayala<\/b><br \/>\nHercules Ayala started as most natives in the island did in those times, in the United States. By the hand of <b>Angelo Savoldi<\/b>, Ayala started a very fruitful wrestling career which peak from the 70s till the late 80s. He wrestled all over the territories, to Canada to Germany and even being a stable in the mid-card for <b>Stampede Wrestling<\/b> \u2013 he won the <b>Stampede International Tag Titles <\/b>with <b>Jim Neidhart<\/b>. In <b>Capitol Sport Promotions<\/b> \u2013 now the World Wrestling Council \u2013 he was a solid babyface, feuding with the likes of <b>Randy Savage<\/b>, <b>Tim Brookes<\/b>, among others. Maybe his most notable place in Puerto Rican history was his <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/c6JYkDhr-hA\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">subsequent heel turn and feud with Carlos Colon<\/a>. Having <b>Chicky Starr<\/b> \u2013 more about him later \u2013 as his mouth piece, Ayala headlined alongside Colon the most infamous of matches to ever make the covers of those years wrestling magazines. From barbwire to ring surrounded by fire, the deathmatch aspect was big in their feud in the late 1980s. Ayala is a 3-times WWC Universal Champion and a 5-times Puerto Rican Champion.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8146\" src=\"http:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/5261591-e1506982673637.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"462\" height=\"509\"><\/p>\n<p><b>9<\/b>. <b>Jose<\/b> <b>Gonzalez<\/b> \u2013 <b>Invader<\/b> <b>I<\/b><br \/>\nProbably the most polarizing figure in Puerto Rican history and in wrestling in general, and for good reasons \u2026 <b>Jose<\/b> <b>Huertas<\/b> <b>Gonzalez<\/b> brought to the island glory and entertainment, but at the same time, he is credited for one of the most savages murder in history of the business and bringing down the whole territory down in the late 80s. Starting his wrestling career in the states and even in the <b>WWF<\/b> as Jose Gonzalez, it wasn\u2019t long for Gonzalez to head to the island and formed one of the most beloved tag teams in Puerto Rico. <b>The Invaders<\/b> \u2013 Jose was <b>Invader<\/b> <b>I<\/b> \u2013 were a unit that won a whopping 13 tag team championship in total \u2013 World Tag Team Championship, North American Tag Team Championship and Caribbean Tag Team Championship \u2013 in <b>WWC<\/b>. In the 80s, Gonzalez was the #2 babyface in the old Capitol Sport Promotions \u2013 behind Carlos Colon \u2013 and was in times the head booker backstage. Nobody cut a better promo in that era, than the <i>\u201cEl<\/i> <i>Jibarito<\/i> <i>de San Lorenzo<\/i>\u201d. Ultimately his legacy will forever be tarnish, he is credited for the murder of <b>Frank<\/b> <b>Goodish<\/b> \u2013 <b>Bruiser Brody<\/b> \u2013 and his actions and later release will make the Puerto Rican territory a hole that most likely, will never be fixed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8145\" src=\"http:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/ray-gonzalez-e1506982650238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/p>\n<p><b>8. Ray Gonzalez<\/b><br \/>\n<i> \u201cMr. Raytings<\/i>\u201d Ray Gonzalez, always imitated, but never duplicated. Starting in the early 90s, Gonzalez was as pure as a babyface can come. The man started as a Jr. Heavyweight wrestler, making some waves and even in 1994, winning the <b>WWC<\/b> <b>Universal<\/b> <b>Championship<\/b>, but it was at the end of the century, were Gonzalez will make his impact in Puerto Rican History. He insulted and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/byc7ulWQbJ4\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">betrayed the then known <i>\u201cEjercito de la Justicia\u201d<\/i><\/a> \u2013 Carlos Colon and Jose Gonzalez was one of the names in that stable \u2013 and became one of the best heels in the island\u2019s history. Creating his own faction \u2013 <i>La Familia del Milenio<\/i> \u2013 Gonzalez claimed throne in Puerto Rico as one of the best wrestlers to ever touch the ring. His technicality, his fluent voice on promos and his famous <i>\u201cMaldita Sea\u201d<\/i> (God Damn it), made him a ratings magnet for WWC. Even in the 2000s, when everyone though that Gonzalez couldn\u2019t reinvent himself, he made the jump to the International Wrestling Association-Puerto Rico and quickly rose to the top with his infamous <i>\u201cRey F\u00e9nix\u201d <\/i>character, capturing in the process the <b>IWA World Heavyweight Championship <\/b>7-times. In the process, he helped build the legacies of <b>Carlito<\/b> and <b>Ricky<\/b> <b>Banderas<\/b> (Mil Muertes), while also working in Japan and Mexico.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8143\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8143\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8143\" src=\"http:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/Savio_Vega_bio-e1506982635367.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"337\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>7.<\/b> <b>Savio Vega<\/b><br \/>\nNo\u2026not WWF Savio Vega, but <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/2017\/08\/03\/caribbean-report-cuervo-cwa-mighty-ursus-returns-wwl-much\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Japan Savio Vega<\/a>. Maybe one of the most underrated workers in the island, <b>Savio Vega<\/b> is responsible for a dozen of careers and has on the most interesting runs in Puerto Rican wrestling history. Starting in the mid-1980s, Vega was amazed by the notorious <i>\u201cTitanes en el Ring\u201d <\/i>show. Jose Rivera \u2013 Savio\u2019s real name \u2013started as an enhancement talent for CSP. He would the get experience by going to <b>Mid-South Wrestling<\/b>, were he wrestled as <b>El Corsario<\/b>. Vega would come back to the island with a fresh gimmick, knowns <b>TNT \u201cEl Hombre Dinamita\u201d <\/b>(The Dynamite Man). His mysterious aura and vivid red and black face paint would gather the attention of Puerto Rican audience. Deemed as the #3 babyface \u2013 behind Gonzalez and Colon \u2013 TNT would have feuds against the likes of <b>Leo Burke<\/b>, <b>Mr. Pogo<\/b> and <b>Rip Rogers<\/b>. But it was in the early 90s that his character would explode, turning heel against Carlos Colon and having a series of epic matches, especially in the Anniversary of those years \u2013 Puerto Rico\u2019s version of WrestleMania. Vega would be a regular in <b>All Japan Pro Wrestling<\/b> and later in <b>New Japan Pro Wrestling<\/b>, teaming with the likes of <b>Scott Norton<\/b> and <b>The Great Mutah<\/b>. He would then have a run in the <b>World<\/b> <b>Wrestling Federation<\/b>, starting as Kwang, but then gaining the Savio Vega character, even being a key part of \u201c<b>Stone Cold\u201d Steve Austin\u2019s<\/b> rise to the wrestling world. Vega would later transition to his own promotion, alongside <b>Victor Qui\u00f1ones<\/b>, forming the<b> IWA Puerto Rico<\/b> and beginning a \u201cboom\u201d in the island that wasn\u2019t seen since the fall of the industry in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8142\" src=\"http:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/ChickyStarr-e1506982621219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"417\" height=\"600\"><\/p>\n<p><b>6. Chicky Starr<\/b><br \/>\nWhen your name becomes synonymous with the word cheater, you know that you\u2019re doing the best heel work of your life. Dubbed <i>\u201cEl Rey de <\/i>la Lucha <i>Libre\u201d <\/i>(The King of Pro Wrestling), Jos\u00e9 Laureano \u2013 Chicky\u2019s real name \u2013 has a special place in most fans heart. His heel tactics were hated, his talk was the most fluent of all and his convincing method made the best babyfaces of that era turned heel in the most despicable ways. Remember Hercules Ayala\u2019s heel turn? <b>Chicky Starr<\/b> was hugely responsible for that being a success. Starr started in Vega Alta alongside another old legend of the business <b>El Profe<\/b>, they would team regularly in Canada for the Stampede Promotion. It was in Puerto Rico, when Starr would surge out of the mid card with a betrayal to huge babyface at the time <b>Invader I<\/b>. With the biggest heel turn of that decade, Starr will ascend as the top heel of the Capitol Sport Promotions, responsible \u2013 in kayfabe \u2013 for bringing the top North American heels to the island <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/duFU0sbxOs4\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">like<b> Stan Hansen<\/b><\/a>, <i>\u201cSadistic\u201d<\/i> <b>Steve Strong<\/b>, <b>Abdullah The Butcher<\/b>, and putting them against his nemesis Carlos Colon and Jose Gonzalez. Even in his heel managerial role, Starr found success in the tag team division with his \u201ckayfabe\u201d cousin <b>Ron Starr<\/b>, both would end up winning 4 Tag Team Championships in the WWC \u2013 2 North American Tag Team Championships and 2 World Tag Team Championships. Starr heel tactics would start a phrase in Puerto Rico, whenever someone deal you bad or played you dirty, <i>\u201cEst\u00e1s bregando a los Chicky Starr\u201d <\/i>(Your dealing Chicky Starr) was a recurring expression. After WWC, Starr would have other runs with his famous <b>Starr Coporation<\/b> \u2013 alongside decease legend <b>Victor the Bodyguard<\/b> \u2013 with the <b>American Wrestling Federation<\/b> and the International Wrestling Association.
