Taking place in the main event of Stardom\u2019s first ever event at the Sendai Sun Plaza, Utami whipped out a brand new maneuver<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a spinning variation of a Crucifix Bomb\u2014to put an end to Mayu Iwatani\u2019s year-long reign as the top champion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/status\/1327913960088059904<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The match was a 24-minute barnburner, with both women determined to one-up each other from start to finish. While the Sendai crowd is not as vocal as somewhere like Tokyo or Osaka, Mayu and Utami gave it their all and brutalized each other, with both women kicking out of the other&#8217;s typical finishing maneuvers. While Mayu has proven to be one of the best big-match wrestlers in Joshi today, she fell just short of the victory against the Kagoshima Supernova.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new champion got to her throne by way of this year\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5STAR Grand Prix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where she righted the wrong of two years ago and triumphed over <\/span><b>Himeka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the finals of the tournament. With the thumbs up from many key members of the Bushiroad era Stardom office <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/1222Dragonmoon\/status\/1324358206609485824?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Most notably Stardom Trainer Milano Collection AT)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was common knowledge that Utami would be the one to lead Stardom into a new boom period and it was only a matter of time before she claimed the gold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the flip side, Mayu has been a proud and respected face of the company for a while now, with her incredible Red Belt reign only further proving that fact. Mayu racked up five successful defenses against the likes of <\/span><b>Momo Watanabe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> Kagetsu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before COVID-19 derailed her momentum throughout the summer months. The Icon was quickly able to make up for lost time, though, as her battles against<\/span><b> Syuri <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Takumi Iroha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were both Match of the Year caliber performances by the champion. Quickly thereafter, Utami\u2019s stablemate and former tag team partner entered the ring with a dead stare towards the champion to declare herself the first challenger for the Red Belt.
