He was 87 years old. In 1958, he was given the mask of the character La Sombra Vengadora (The Avenging Shadow), who had appeared in several cult classic films in Mexico, <em><strong>La Sombra Vengadora<\/strong><\/em> (1954) and the sequel, <em><strong>La Sombra Vengadora vs. Le Mano Negra<\/strong><\/em> (1956).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-70558\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-13-at-8.59.03-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-13-at-8.59.03-PM.png 290w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-13-at-8.59.03-PM-219x300.png 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As La Sombra Vengadora, he became a national star, and even competed against other top lucha stars who were movie stars as well, including <strong>El Santo<\/strong>. In 1960, Rogelio de la Paz had a falling out with the creators of the La Samobra Vengadora character and in September of 1960, lost his famous mask to <strong>El Enformero<\/strong> in a mask vs. mask match at Arena Coliseo with <strong>Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre (EMLL).<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70559\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70559\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-70559\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-13-at-8.56.21-PM-e1592096529237.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"485\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70559\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: SuperLuchas.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>La Sombra Vengadora would continue to wrestle for decades, sporadically returning with his mask at times, as well as competing under his real name. By the 1970s, he entered a state of semi-retirement, but he would continue to work indie promotions through Mexico until his full retirement in 2016. By then he was considered a legend in Mexico, having competed in seven different decades. His family would continue his legacy, with his three sons competing as <strong>El Hijo de Sombra Vengadora, Sombra Vengadora Jr.<\/strong>, and <strong>La Sombra Vengandora II<\/strong>.
