For many, that\u2019s a career in\u00a0<strong>WWE <\/strong>or more recently AEW, IMPACT! Wrestling or even NJPW. But sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination. In LWOPW\u2019s newest feature, \u201cBefore They Were Famous,\u201d we take a look at the pre-WWE careers of some of the company\u2019s top current stars, following along on their road to superstardom. In this edition, we look at the long journey of former <strong>UFC<\/strong> and<strong> NXT<\/strong> star, <strong>SmackDown<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Matt Riddle<\/strong>.\u00a0 Matt Riddle was famous before arriving to the WWE, as a result of his time within the UFC and the fallout which surrounded it.\u00a0 However, this is about his journey to the WWE through his pro-wrestling career.\u00a0 Therefore, the UFC career will only briefly be mentioned.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Matt Riddle was born on January 14, 1986, in Allentown, Pennsylvania.\u00a0 Though Riddle may have never envisioned a career in professional wrestling, he always excelled at amateur wrestling.\u00a0 For those who do not follow MMA, <strong>Jon Jones<\/strong> is widely considered one of the greatest of all time within the sport.\u00a0 Within MMA, he has a near-perfect record of 26-1 (1) &#8211; with both the loss and the bracketed loss coming from disqualifications.\u00a0 Therefore, he is <em>very<\/em> highly regarded within the Octagon.\u00a0 As a state wrestling champion, Riddle actually pinned Jones &#8211; thus demonstrating Riddle&#8217;s talent as a wrestler.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69493\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69493\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69493\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Matt-Riddle-as-State-Champion-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Matt-Riddle-as-State-Champion-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Matt-Riddle-as-State-Champion-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Matt-Riddle-as-State-Champion-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Matt-Riddle-as-State-Champion-1-420x420.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Riddle in 1st place, Jon Jones in 3rd<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>UFC Beginnings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Matt Riddle soon found fame on UFC&#8217;s Ultimate Fighter in 2008, where he was<strong> Quinton &#8220;Rampage&#8221; Jackson<\/strong>&#8216;s rookie.\u00a0 Riddle developed a solid career within the UFC, earning a reputation as something of a rising star.\u00a0 As a middleweight, he was deemed one of the hottest prospects for the future of the sport.\u00a0 In addition to being a legitimate tough guy, Riddle is also fond of cannabis &#8211; something which has led to his easy-going, &#8220;bro&#8221; image.\u00a0 He has in the past spoken to<em><strong> VICE Sport<\/strong><\/em> on his love for cannabis and how it helps tame his ADHD.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI did my research. I\u2019ve had hand surgeries, I\u2019ve used pharmaceuticals, and I [eventually] felt like, \u2018Holy s***, this is addicting and I shouldn\u2019t be taking this because I want to take more and I\u2019m not even in pain.\u2019 Marijuana never felt like that. I just like the way it makes me feel. I\u2019m about to be 32, I barely work out, and I\u2019m shredded. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s because of the weed, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s hurting me either, you know?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Leaving Mixed Martial Arts for Professional Wrestling<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16661\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16661\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16661\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/04\/11-march-11-2017-2-e1522798483498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Oli Sandler &#8211; Ringside Perspective<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unfortunately, Riddle&#8217;s taste for cannabis would bring his UFC career to an end.\u00a0 Multiple failings of the extensive tests for marijuana in the UFC tarnished his very impressive 10-3 record &#8211; including a five-win winning streak.\u00a0 Riddle, to this day, is still furious about the release &#8211; and rightfully so.\u00a0 With Riddle predominantly smoking weed for medicinal purposes &#8211; possessing a medical marijuana card for the State of Nevada &#8211; it is easy to understand why he would be frustrated by his release from a company that regularly employs fighters who have failed more serious drug tests.\u00a0 However, this is what led Riddle to professional wrestling after short stints in <strong>Bellator<\/strong> and <strong>Titan Fighting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22703\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/07\/matt-riddle-e1532404604263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\"><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Matt Riddle: Training and EVOLVE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16833\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16833\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16833\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/04\/DaEcGUvW0AEp4V1-e1522985637163.jpg\" alt=\"Matt Riddle\" width=\"600\" height=\"309\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16833\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Cerebral Hunter \/ twitter.com\/Delisketo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Matt Riddle began training at <strong>Monster Factory<\/strong> (Paulsboro, New Jersey) in November 2014.\u00a0 Like <strong>Kurt Angle<\/strong> and <strong>Brock Lesnar<\/strong> before him, to name but two, Riddle&#8217;s amateur wrestling background would provide him with all the basic tools necessary to excel within pro-wrestling.\u00a0 His first event match &#8211; a no contest against <strong>Nick Comoroto<\/strong> &#8211; came just three months later.\u00a0 Just eight months later (less than a year after beginning training), Riddle was wrestling at <em><strong>EVOLVE 49<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 It was here where he would defeat<strong> Johnathan Gresham<\/strong> in just under five minutes.\u00a0 Despite the &#8220;relaxed bro&#8221; persona Riddle takes with him, he is a shrewd businessman.\u00a0 He is determined to make himself more valuable within pro-wrestling.\u00a0 He would work the next thirty-eight straight <strong>EVOLVE<\/strong> events, with a gap between his<em><strong> EVOLVE 87<\/strong><\/em> victory over current NXT North American Champion,<strong> Keith Lee,<\/strong> and his <em><strong>EVOLVE 90<\/strong><\/em> victory over<strong> Lio Rush<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/VQjl4zSpE6A<\/p>\n<p>Due to EVOLVE&#8217;s friendly relationship with WWE, he still features for them every so often.\u00a0 He held the EVOLVE Championship for 121 days in 2018, therefore he is one of the company&#8217;s greatest former champions.\u00a0 Aside from EVOLVE, Riddle has worked all over the world.\u00a0 <strong>PROGRESS Wrestling<\/strong>, <strong>Pro Wrestling Guerrilla<\/strong>, <strong>Major League Wrestling<\/strong>,<strong> The Crash<\/strong>, <strong>Elite Canadian Championship Wrestling<\/strong>, among others, are notable for having featured The Bro.\u00a0 Riddle also has a number of accolades to his name.\u00a0 Before joining the WWE in 2018, Riddle had won the <strong>King of Khaos<\/strong> Championship; the PWG World Tag Team Championships as one half of the <strong>Chosen Bros<\/strong> (with <strong>Jeff Cobb<\/strong>), the <strong>WWN<\/strong> Championship and more.\u00a0 His run as PROGRESS Atlas Champion was considered the belt&#8217;s highest point as he helped legitimize the division with his matches against <strong>WALTER<\/strong> being some of the best PROGRESS wrestling has ever held.\u00a0 He will only add to the growing list of accomplishments as he proceeds further into his career.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Matt Riddle Signs for WWE and NXT Career<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69494\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69494\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-69494\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Matt-Riddle-Pete-Dunne-and-Triple-H.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Matt-Riddle-Pete-Dunne-and-Triple-H.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Matt-Riddle-Pete-Dunne-and-Triple-H-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After years of developing a reputation as one of the indie circuit&#8217;s hottest acts, Riddle finally joined the WWE in July of 2018.\u00a0 He was first spotted in the <em><strong>NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn IV<\/strong><\/em> crowd, as has been the case with some of the other high profile NXT acquisitions.\u00a0 Though wrestling numerous house shows prior, Riddle made his NXT TV debut on October 17 2018, where he squashed<strong> Luke Menzies<\/strong> in just over three minutes.\u00a0 His <em>NXT TakeOver<\/em> debut at <em><strong>NXT TakeOver: War Games II<\/strong><\/em> saw him defeat <strong>Kassius Ohno<\/strong> in seven seconds.\u00a0 It remains the fastest match in NXT history.\u00a0 His next NXT appearance would see him again defeat Kassius Ohno, though in a slightly more competitive match.\u00a0 He would build a dominant, undefeated reputation within the company until meeting <strong>The Velveteen Dream<\/strong> at <em><strong>NXT TakeOver: New York<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 The feud began over Riddle wanting Dream&#8217;s NXT North American Championship, which Riddle would never win.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dream unloads on Riddle in a bid to retain his NXT North American Title: NXT TakeOver: New York\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eWHoKyquhxM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Various attempts to capture the NXT Championship from Adam Cole would eventually lead Riddle to<strong> Pete Dunne<\/strong>.\u00a0 The <em><strong>2020 Dusty Rhodes Classic<\/strong><\/em> saw the unlikely couple being but together to compete within the tournament.\u00a0 As mentioned earlier, Matt Riddle&#8217;s character is that of the easy-going, stoner bro who can kick your a** when necessary.\u00a0 As the WWE commentary team would say: he likes to have fun.\u00a0 Pete Dunne is far more serious a competitor.\u00a0 An excellent technical wrestler in his own regard, Dunne lacks the charisma of Riddle.\u00a0 Together, they are the perfect balance of seriousness and hilarity.\u00a0 Dunne is the straight-man Martin to Riddle&#8217;s comedic Lewis.\u00a0 A win over Welsh duo <strong>Mark Andrews<\/strong> and <strong>Flash Morgan Webster<\/strong> in the opening round.\u00a0 Followed by a win over <strong>Imperium<\/strong> (<strong>Fabian Aichner<\/strong> and <strong>Marcel Barthel<\/strong>) in the second.\u00a0 \u00a0And lastly, the big, defining win over the <strong>Grizzled Young Veterans<\/strong> (<strong>James Drake<\/strong> and <strong>Zack Gibson<\/strong>) in the finals was the <strong>BroserWeights<\/strong>&#8216; path to\u00a0winning the trophy.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>BroserWeights, Lockdown and Timothy Thatcher<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The BroserWeights would go on to form a formidable tag team.\u00a0 So formidable, in fact, that they would soon capture the NXT Tag Team Championships from<strong> Bobby Fish<\/strong> and<strong> Kyle O&#8217;Reilly<\/strong> of the <strong>Undisputed Era<\/strong> at <em><strong>NXT TakeOver: Portland<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 This would, of course, mark Riddle&#8217;s first championship win within the WWE.\u00a0 Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 lockdown, Riddle and Dunne would be separated &#8211; with their last title defense coming back in March.\u00a0 With Dunne being stranded in the UK, Timothy Thatcher &#8211; long-time friend and foe of Riddle in EVOLVE &#8211; would step up to replace him.\u00a0 Like Dunne, Thatcher is a serious competitor not known for being overtly charismatic.\u00a0 Additionally, he is known for being a member of <strong>Ringkampf<\/strong> &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/2019\/04\/23\/from-struggle-to-absolute-power-new-faction-debuts-at-nxt-uk-tapings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">indie precursor to Imperium<\/a>.\u00a0 This inevitably led to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/2020\/04\/16\/timothy-thatcher-matt-riddle\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thatcher turning on Riddle<\/a>, costing his and Pete Dunne&#8217;s NXT Tag Team Championships to Imperium earlier in the month, with Thatcher shouting &#8220;I&#8217;ve had enough of you&#8221; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This led to Riddle defeating Thatcher on the May 13 edition of NXT.\u00a0 However, an attack on Riddle after the match kept the feud going &#8211; leading the two grapplers to the cage.\u00a0 Not an ordinary WWE cage, of course.\u00a0 Nope, not an ordinary MMA cage, either.\u00a0 The &#8220;NXT Fight Pit&#8221; is something of a cross between the two.\u00a0 An unrelenting, unforgiving steel structure which one must assume won&#8217;t be used often within the WWE.\u00a0 In addition to this new match concept, we also got the return of recently released <strong>Kurt Angle<\/strong>.\u00a0 Who better than an Olympic gold medal-winning amateur wrestler to officiate this kind of grueling fight?\u00a0 Despite Riddle clearly having the more prominent cage-fighting history, he would lose the fight.\u00a0 However, despite the loss, the nature of this match &#8211; the drama, the blood, the originality and the work-rate &#8211; made this an arguably Match of the Year contender. This brings &#8211; at least for now &#8211; this storied feud to an end.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Matt Riddle vs. Timothy Thatcher \u2013 Fight Pit w\/ guest referee Kurt Angle: WWE NXT, May 27, 2020\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BBcwquhJ-Bo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Matt Riddle Moving to SmackDown<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Matt Riddle\u2019s tense meeting with Goldberg backstage at SummerSlam: WWE Watch Along\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M0zGEqVePzI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In moving on up to SmackDown, Matt Riddle is heading to where he belongs.\u00a0 He is a naturally gifted, freak athlete.\u00a0 He is the kind who despite perhaps not initially wanting to pursue a career in professional wrestling, go on to have a storied career and cement a place as one of the all-time greats (again, think Lesnar and Angle).\u00a0 Unlike many other crossover stars, he paid his dues and honed his craft on the independent circuit.\u00a0 He has become an excellent, highly-entertaining professional wrestler as a result.\u00a0 Additionally, he is also a naturally charismatic performer; making him the complete package.\u00a0 Whereas the Original Bro has all the tools to succeed within the WWE, he does have the tendency to irritate some of the older stars.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Keith Lee and Matt Riddle deliver pain to Sami Zayn: SmackDown, Nov. 1, 2019\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RgJEX5AvIcE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>His constant goading of <strong>Goldberg<\/strong> and Brock Lesnar &#8211; both of whom he hopes to retire &#8211; has led to some amounts of backstage heat.\u00a0 He has had altercations with both men &#8211; with the Goldberg incident<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7m6vwXSU2qs\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> hilariously caught on camera<\/a>.\u00a0 He has spoken of a separate incident with Lesnar; with the former UFC Heavyweight Champion promising Riddle he will never work with him.\u00a0 It is hard to tell whether Riddle&#8217;s prominent hunger for competing with the big stars will help or hinder in the long run.\u00a0 Though he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportskeeda.com\/wwe\/matt-riddle-discusses-the-broserweights-backstage-heat-goldberg-more-exclusive\/4\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has made it clear this is simply his way of working<\/a>, some of the legends do not see it this way.\u00a0 There is an unwritten constitution with pro-wrestling and to these old-timers, Riddle is breaking it.\u00a0 Therefore, so long as he can work a bit more carefully in this regard, he will go on to have the excellent, accolade laden career he is capable of having.\u00a0 There is only one Original Bro and he&#8217;s moving on up.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q3F5iM1gUU8<\/p>\n<p>On this week&#8217;s SmackDown, Matt Riddle was announced by Kurt Angle as the latest acquisition for the blue brand.\u00a0 Where does he go from here?
