For many, that\u2019s a career in\u00a0<strong>WWE<\/strong>. But sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination. In LWOPW\u2019s newest feature, \u201cBefore They Were Famous,\u201d we take a look at the pre-WWE careers of some of the company\u2019s top current stars, following along on their road to superstardom. In this edition, we dive into the early days of <strong>NXT<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cGirl with the Shiniest Wizard,\u201d <strong>Tegan Nox<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64637\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/Tegan-Nox-Qualifies-For-Tampa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/Tegan-Nox-Qualifies-For-Tampa.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/Tegan-Nox-Qualifies-For-Tampa-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tegan Nox is one of NXT&#8217;s future superstars.\u00a0 At just twenty-five years of age, Nox has already established herself as a cornerstone of the black and yellow brand.\u00a0 Her ongoing feud with former best friend, <strong>Dakota Kai<\/strong>, has been a highlight of NXT throughout 2020.\u00a0 She has become the &#8220;Girl with the Shiniest Wizard&#8221;, whilst also sometimes being &#8220;Lady Kane&#8221;.\u00a0 Her rise to superstardom has been quite sudden.\u00a0 With all this being said, where did Nox come from? What has she been through to get to this point? What obstacles has she had to overcome to reach the heights she so far has? Let&#8217;s find out.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>From the Valleys to the Indies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68720\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68720\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-68720\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Tegan-Nox-Welsh-Flag.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Tegan-Nox-Welsh-Flag.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Tegan-Nox-Welsh-Flag-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you have ever heard a Tegan Nox interview, you might have noticed she has an <em>unusual<\/em> accent.\u00a0 Tegan Nox (real name Steffanie Rhiannon Newell) is from the small Welsh town of Bargoed.\u00a0 If you grew up in or have ever visited Wales, you will know that small Welsh towns are<em> extra small<\/em>.\u00a0 They are often tiny, close-knit, working-class communities spread out through valleys, rivers and the occasional larger cities (Cardiff and Swansea, for example).\u00a0 It was here where Tegan grew up to love sports.\u00a0 She played football (soccer), netball and Wales&#8217; national sport, rugby.\u00a0 Tegan particularly excelled at football, with trials for the Welsh national team a common part of her success.\u00a0 Unfortunately, a promising football career was brought to an end by a severe knee injury.\u00a0 Knee injuries would go on to be the Achilles heel of Tegan&#8217;s professional career.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TEGAN NOX gets real on meeting Kane and Molly Holly! \u2013 Superstar Savepoint\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LxuwsZGjf48?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Though a knee injury would prematurely end her football career, it would be the catalyst for her professional wrestling career.\u00a0 A childhood fan of WWE (particularly of <strong>Molly Holly<\/strong> and <strong>Kane<\/strong>), Tegan would turn her attention to pro-wrestling.\u00a0 With the love and support of her late grandfather, the future &#8220;Girl with the Shiniest Wizard&#8221; would pursue a wrestling career.\u00a0 She did just that, discovering a wrestling school in Port Talbot ran by <strong>Dave Stewart<\/strong> and <strong>NXT UK<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>&#8220;Wild Boar&#8221; Mike Hitchman<\/strong>.\u00a0 It was here in the early part of the 2010s where she would hone her craft and quickly develop the raw talent which has made her now, at just 25 years of age, one of the hottest prospects in pro-wrestling today.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Nixon Newell and the Shiniest of Debuts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68722\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68722\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-68722\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Nixon-Newell.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Nixon-Newell.png 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Nixon-Newell-300x194.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tegan Nox made her in-ring debut for <strong>Welsh Wrestling<\/strong> in 2013.\u00a0 Teaming with <strong>Big Dog<\/strong>, Tegan (then known as <strong>Miss Ruby<\/strong>) defeated the team of<strong> Gordon Bennett<\/strong> and <strong>Pollyanna<\/strong>.\u00a0 Even then, you have to think those in attendance recognized her significant potential.\u00a0 Her first appearance outside of her training facility came for <strong>Britannia Wrestling Promotions<\/strong>.\u00a0 Her debut match was a three way in Prestatyn, North Wales, where she and <strong>Porsche<\/strong> were defeated by<strong> Lana Austin<\/strong>.\u00a0 We approached BWP owner, <strong>Steve Saxon<\/strong>, for comment on Tegan&#8217;s early days of her career with the promotion.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I believe that Nixon\u2019s first in-ring debut outside of her training facility was with Britannia Wrestling Promotions. She was part of a triple threat match with Lana Austin and Porsche in Prestatyn.\u00a0 Steph [Tegan] was an absolute delight to work with to have around the locker room. A literal ray of sunshine and happiness! She was a hard working and forward thinking talent from the moment we met in 2013, hence why she became a main stay with Britannia for several years.&#8221; &#8211; Steve Saxon, Owner of BWP<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Saxon&#8217;s comments come as no surprise.\u00a0 All accounts of Tegan&#8217;s work-rate, passion and love for the business point to the extremely positive.\u00a0 Shortly after honing her craft in BWP, Tegan debuted for Birmingham based promotion, <strong>ATTACK! Pro Wrestling<\/strong> in July of 2014.\u00a0 Now going by the name <strong>Nixon Newell<\/strong> &#8211; the name which she would become noticed with, she would quickly establish herself as a favorite in the promotion.\u00a0 She would become close friends with the likes of <strong>Pete Dunne<\/strong>, <strong>Chris Brookes<\/strong> and fellow Welshman, NXT UK&#8217;s <strong>Mark Andrews<\/strong>.\u00a0 She would capture the ATTACK! 24:7 Championship three times (with <strong>Lana Austin<\/strong> on one occasion) and the ATTACK! Pro Wrestling<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Signing with the WWE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/apt7iWgPEHI<\/p>\n<p>From her ATTACK debut in 2014 to her signing for WWE in 2017, Nox appeared for numerous promotions.\u00a0 She made appearances in<strong> Fight Club: Pro<\/strong> and <strong>What Culture Pro Wrestling<\/strong>, where she was the inaugural WCPW Women&#8217;s Champion.\u00a0 She even went east, having an excellent match with <strong>Kairi Hojo<\/strong> (WWE&#8217;s <strong>Kairi Sane<\/strong>) for the Wonder of Stardom Championship.\u00a0 Though she lost the match, she would be signed by WWE just three months later.\u00a0 In a time when British wrestling was enduring something of a &#8220;boom&#8221; period, Nox was one of the standout women performers.\u00a0 In April 2017, the future Tegan Nox clearly impressed, put pen-to-paper and officially signed with World Wrestling Entertainment.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mae Young Classic, Heartbreak and the Comeback<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68724\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68724\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-68724 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Nixon-Newell-Mae-Young-Classic-2017.jpg\" alt=\"Tegan Nox\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Nixon-Newell-Mae-Young-Classic-2017.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Nixon-Newell-Mae-Young-Classic-2017-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Upon signing for the WWE, it was immediately announced that Tegan would be featuring in the inaugural <em><strong>Mae Young Classic<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 The tournament would be won by one-time foe, Kairi Sane.\u00a0 If you can think back to this time in 2017, you may remember that Tegan never featured in the tournament.\u00a0 Suffering the most cruel of WWE starts, Tegan&#8217;s debut in the tournament was halted by a torn ACL in her right leg.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tegan Nox on her road back from injury: WWE NXT, Oct. 2, 2019\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7ZyKZ3utf2A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>To have your dream so cruelly taken away is crushing.\u00a0 An injury like this can leave you worried: Will they still like me when I come back? Can I still work the same? Will I be released? Whereas a knee injury brought a premature end to her promising football career, she would not let it end her wrestling career.\u00a0 She would return to the ring in 2018, where she would finally make her NXT debut.\u00a0 Teaming with future rival, Dakota Kai, she would win in her debut match at an NXT live event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68725\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68725\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-68725\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Tegan-Nox-NXT.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Tegan-Nox-NXT.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Tegan-Nox-NXT-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68725\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She would then enter the <em><strong>2018 Mae Young Classic<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 It was here, of course, where heartbreak would strike once more.\u00a0 Against rival Rhea Ripley in the quarter-finals, Nox suffered <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/eqmynzBsjuE\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">another load of knee injuries<\/a> &#8211; this time in her left leg.\u00a0 A torn MCL, ACL, lateral collateral ligament, meniscus and patella dislocation were all had.\u00a0 Suffering successive injuries in such a short space of time must play havoc on the mind of an athlete.\u00a0 In enduring these injuries and making it through stronger than ever, however, Tegan has demonstrated that she is not only a great talent loaded with in-ring ability, but that she has seriously strong mentality; with the determination to not let injuries get in the way of her goal.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeganNoxWWE_\/status\/1052741053328097280<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tegan Nox: Comeback and Feud with Dakota Kai<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68729\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68729\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-68729 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Nox-and-Kai.jpg\" alt=\"Tegan Nox\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Nox-and-Kai.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Nox-and-Kai-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a truly heart-warming display, Tegan Nox would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=22IVjQ91lWM\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">return almost a year later<\/a>.\u00a0 This time, she would be featuring for NXT UK.\u00a0 A failed attempt at the NXT UK Women&#8217;s Champion, <strong>Kay Lee Ray<\/strong>, would see her return to her rightful home &#8211; NXT.\u00a0 She would quickly reunite with tag team partner, Dakota Kai, and would have an attempt at the <strong>Kabuki Warriors<\/strong>&#8216; (<strong>Asuka<\/strong> and Kairi Sane&#8217;s) WWE Women&#8217;s Tag Team Championships.\u00a0 Long-time foe and NXT Women&#8217;s Champion, Rhea Ripley, would pick Tegan to join her WarGames team at<em><strong> NXT TakeOver: WarGames<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 This was to be Tegan&#8217;s biggest match to date.\u00a0 Unfortunately, long-time partner, Dakota Kai, would turn on Tegan &#8211; beating her down and taking her out of the match.\u00a0 A kayfabe injury was endured, keeping Nox off of TV for a couple of months.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dakota Kai heinously turns against \u201cbest friend\u201d Tegan Nox: TakeOver: WarGames (WWE Network)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6hcL6ViGxJQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>She would return in January 2020, where she was again attacked by Kai.\u00a0 The feud would grow nastier as the former best friends attempted to hurt each other week-after-week.\u00a0 Though Nox would defeat Kai on an episode of NXT, Kai would get the upper-hand at NXT TakeOver: Portland, with the help from a returning <strong>Raquel Gonzalez<\/strong>.\u00a0 Since then, Nox has looked to the aid of Shotzi Blackheart in the war against Kai and Gonzalez.\u00a0 As the year goes on, this feud continues to excite.\u00a0 Where it leads is anyone&#8217;s guess, but one must assume it surely leads to Tegan Nox finally gaining revenge over her former best friend.\u00a0 Then, hopefully, she will one day secure the NXT Women&#8217;s Championship.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tegan Nox and the Future<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kane surprises \u201cLady Kane\u201d Tegan Nox: WWE\u2019s The Bump, Oct. 30, 2019\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0tjjmSnN1Uo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Girl with the Shiniest Wizard&#8221;
