{"id":68682,"date":"2020-05-16T12:20:04","date_gmt":"2020-05-16T16:20:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/?p=68682"},"modified":"2020-05-16T12:20:04","modified_gmt":"2020-05-16T16:20:04","slug":"mike-tyson-a-wrestling-influence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2020\/05\/16\/mike-tyson-a-wrestling-influence\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Tyson: A Wrestling Influence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in March, we looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/2020\/03\/26\/muhammad-ali-a-wrestling-influence\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Muhammad Ali<\/strong>&#8216;s influence<\/a> on the world of professional wrestling.\u00a0 A near-thirty year love affair saw Muhammad Ali become inspired by <strong>Gorgeous George<\/strong>, main event <em><strong>WrestleMania<\/strong><\/em> and end up on the receiving end of a <strong>Gorilla Monsoon<\/strong> airplane spin.\u00a0 It was announced this week that<strong> WWE<\/strong> <em><strong>Hall of Fame<\/strong><\/em> inductee (2012), &#8220;Iron&#8221; <strong>Mike Tyson<\/strong>, would be appearing at<strong> All Elite Wrestling<\/strong>&#8216;s<em><strong> Double or Nothing II<\/strong> <\/em>pay-per-view.\u00a0 Tyson will be in attendance to award the TNT Championship to the winner of the tournament.\u00a0 Much like fellow boxing legend Muhammad Ali, Tyson has endured a three-decade relationship with pro-wrestling.\u00a0 Therefore, let us now embark on a trip down memory lane through the wrestling-Tyson connection.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tyson in 1997<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-68684\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-1997.jpg\" alt=\"Mike Tyson in 1997\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-1997.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-1997-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-1997-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-1997-265x198.jpg 265w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-1997-560x420.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 1997, Mike Tyson was justifiably carrying the &#8220;Baddest Man on the Planet&#8221; persona around.\u00a0 Two years removed from a release from prison, which saw him win all but one fight, Tyson was feared by all.\u00a0 A notorious hothead who could quite literally snap at the slightest of looks, he very much was the &#8220;Baddest Man on the Planet&#8221;.\u00a0 On June 28, 1997, Tyson suffered his <em>second<\/em> successive defeat to <strong>Evander Holyfield<\/strong>.\u00a0 In boxing, two successive defeats to the same fighter usually means you are done.\u00a0 In pro-wrestling terms, the feud comes to an end.\u00a0 Of course, this was no ordinary defeat.\u00a0 Perhaps more famous than the fight itself was Tyson&#8217;s <em>constant<\/em> biting of Holyfield&#8217;s left ear, which led to &#8220;Iron&#8221; Mike&#8217;s disqualification.\u00a0 All hell broke loose and Tyson was hit with a $3,000,000 fine and a permanent suspension from the ring.\u00a0 The suspension would be overturned but the fine would add to the well-documented financial troubles of Tyson.\u00a0 Tyson, with an excellent 45-3 fight record, would be done with boxing until January 1999.\u00a0 Enter <strong>Vincent Kennedy McMahon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mike Tyson vs Evander Holyfield II  1997 HD 1080\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y_bkDbpS-vw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mike Tyson Signs with the World Wrestling Federation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68685\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68685\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-68685\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-WWF.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-WWF.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-WWF-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68685\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mike Tyson was in the crowd for <em><strong>Royal Rumble 1998<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 A renowned childhood fan of professional wrestling, it wasn&#8217;t too big of a surprise to see Tyson enjoying the show.\u00a0 When interviewed by <strong>Michael Cole<\/strong> after <strong>Stone Cold Steve Austin<\/strong>&#8216;s victory in the <em>Royal Rumble<\/em> match, Tyson professed how big of a fan he is of the &#8220;Texas Rattlesnake&#8221;.\u00a0 He referred to him as &#8220;the t**s&#8221;.\u00a0 Tyson, like many people, was also a childhood fan of Muhammad Ali.\u00a0 Even today, Tyson still speaks of how much of an idol &#8220;The Greatest&#8221; was to him.\u00a0 Just like his hero, &#8220;Iron Mike&#8221; was about to be dragged into the world of professional wrestling.\u00a0 His confessed love for Steve Austin was about to turn sour.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tyson and Austin brawl on Raw: WWE Raw\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L5abDK1j5IE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Appearing on RAW is WAR<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As mentioned previously, Tyson was a loose cannon.\u00a0 It is therefore shocking to some that Vince McMahon was willing to do business with him.\u00a0 However, despite Tyson&#8217;s somewhat tarnished reputation, he was an absolute draw.\u00a0 Already the most famous current boxer of the time, Holyfield II made him a mega star.\u00a0 To again use a wrestling term, he had become the world&#8217;s number one heel.\u00a0 So the next night on <strong>RAW is War<\/strong>, it is no surprise Tyson was greeted with a chorus of boos and chants of &#8220;Holyfield!&#8221; when he was called to the ring by Mr. McMahon.\u00a0 Stone Cold Steve Austin would soon come to the ring, a brawl would ensue and the rest is history.\u00a0 Many look to this brawl as the real turning point in the <strong>Monday Night Wars<\/strong>.\u00a0 Prior to the Tyson\/Austin feud, <strong>WCW<\/strong> <strong>Monday Nitro <\/strong>was on the infamous 84-week ratings run of dominance over the WWF.\u00a0 It was the run which nearly drove Vince McMahon out of business.\u00a0 Three years to the month after Tyson&#8217;s appearance at <em><strong>WrestleMania XIV<\/strong><\/em>, WCW would be out of business.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;When he pushed me, he pushed the s**t out of me.\u00a0 Mike Tyson is strong as hell.\u00a0 When he pushed me I will never forget all those hundred dollar bills flying out of his suit and all his handlers grabbing up those hundred dollar bills.&#8221; &#8211; Steve Austin (Steve Austin Show: Unleashed podcast)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>WrestleMania 14<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/43SgZGlXRE4<\/p>\n<p>In the fallout of the now famous Austin\/Tyson brawl, Tyson aligned with <strong>D-Generation X<\/strong>.\u00a0 D-X and Tyson would antagonize Steve Austin for weeks in the build-up to <em>WrestleMania XIV<\/em>, where Austin was to face <strong>Shawn Michaels<\/strong> for the WWF Championship.\u00a0 Austin had been rightfully positioned as the figurehead of the company.\u00a0 His anti-authority, anti-hero character had propelled him to the ultimate spotlight.\u00a0 All he needed was mainstream exposure, which Tyson brought to him.\u00a0 Even today, Austin admits that the feud with Tyson was a large part of the reason for Austin&#8217;s success as a babyface.\u00a0 WrestleMania XIV was to be the true passing-of-the-torch moment.\u00a0 From one Texan to another, HBK would pass the torch and the Steve Austin phenomenon was well-and-truly underway.\u00a0 When the match looked as though Austin was about to be cheated out of his victory, Tyson intervened.\u00a0 The special enforcer for the WrestleMania main event &#8211; just as Ali was years ago &#8211; Tyson intervened.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Iron&quot; Mike Tyson knocks out Shawn Michaels: WrestleMania XIV\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fbY4OKHoiy4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When Austin rightfully won the match, Shawn Michaels became infuriated with Tyson.\u00a0 &#8220;Iron Mike&#8221; was clutching an &#8220;Austin 3:16&#8221; shirt as Michaels unloaded into him with a range of profanities.\u00a0 Mr. WrestleMania would come to regret his words as Tyson socked him with one of his famous right hooks.\u00a0 HBK dropped to the floor faster than you can say &#8220;showstopper&#8221;.\u00a0 At <em>Royal Rumble 1998<\/em> months earlier, Michaels had suffered the back injury (two herniated discs and a crushed disc in his lower back) which would force him to retire that same year.\u00a0 Michaels&#8217; selling of Tyson&#8217;s punch &#8211; landing heavily on his back &#8211; meant Michaels would miss the next four years.\u00a0 In his absence and with the help of Tyson, Austin would become the undisputed, number one guy in professional wrestling.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mike Tyson&#8217;s Wrestling Appearances Since<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mike Tyson inducted into WWE Hall of Fame: April 2, 2012\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OgwmaEbGRh8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Mike Tyson has made pro-wrestling appearances since 1998, predominantly with the WWE.\u00a0 He has returned as the Guest Host of RAW (remember that?) and rejoined D-X one last time.\u00a0 Luckily for HBK, Tyson would not turn on them this time.\u00a0 With no Austin around, Tyson opted to help D-X and instead knocked out <strong>Chris Jericho<\/strong> (who sold that punch like a champ).\u00a0 In 2012, he was rightfully inducted into the <strong>WWE Hall of Fame<\/strong> for his contribution to professional wrestling.\u00a0 It was a celebrity induction which can&#8217;t be argued against (unlike <strong>Drew Carey<\/strong>) as Tyson is very much a large part of the reason there even remains a WWE.\u00a0 In his induction speech, he revealed that as a childhood fan of <strong>Bruno Sammartino<\/strong>, he always wanted to be a pro-wrestler.\u00a0 Arrests during his teen years would stop this and see him link up with trainer, <strong>Cus D&#8217;Amato<\/strong>.\u00a0 Once again, the rest is history.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Appearing at AEW&#8217;s Double or Nothing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68690\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68690\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-68690\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-DoN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-DoN.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/05\/Mike-Tyson-DoN-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: AEW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On this week&#8217;s episode of <strong>AEW Dynamite<\/strong>, it was revealed that &#8220;Iron Mike&#8221; Might we see another Jericho\/Tyson confrontation?
