{"id":66928,"date":"2020-04-16T12:00:36","date_gmt":"2020-04-16T16:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/?p=66928"},"modified":"2020-04-16T10:57:35","modified_gmt":"2020-04-16T14:57:35","slug":"rusev-day-wwe-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2020\/04\/16\/rusev-day-wwe-career\/","title":{"rendered":"Rusev Day: A Look at Rusev&#8217;s WWE Career"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a day which will forever be dubbed as Black Wednesday, a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/2020\/04\/15\/ec3-karl-anderson-released-wwe\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lengthy list of talent were released from their <strong>WWE<\/strong> contracts<\/a>.\u00a0 An almost certain attempt to cut costs during the turbulent times we find ourselves in, many dreams were brought to a sad, cruel end.\u00a0 Senior referee, <strong>Mike Chioda<\/strong> &#8211; WWE&#8217;s head referee since 2005 &#8211; was released.\u00a0 Legendary Hall of Fame inductee, <strong>Kurt Angle<\/strong>, was let go.\u00a0 Black Wednesday did not discriminate against talent and perhaps most notably, <strong>Mirsolav Barnyashev <\/strong>(<strong>Rusev<\/strong>), was among the casualties.\u00a0 Of the current crop of stars let go, Barnyashev is possibly the biggest name.\u00a0 Though his release should come as no surprise considering the months of teasing his exit, it still bears some surprise.\u00a0 Without further ado, let us take a look at the WWE career of the man dubbed the Bulgarian Brute.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Thank you All, Rusev out!<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Miro (@ToBeMiro) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ToBeMiro\/status\/1250515808356188160?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">April 15, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Alexander Rusev Signs with World Wrestling Entertainment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Immediately upon signing for WWE in September 2010, Miroslav Barnyashev was given the name <strong>Alexander Rusev<\/strong>.\u00a0 A big man, standing at six-foot tall and weighing around three-hundred pounds, Barnyashev was clearly signed with the intention of bringing legitimacy to the roster.\u00a0 He was sent to work in<strong> Florida Championship Wrestling<\/strong> (<strong>FCW<\/strong>) &#8211; WWE&#8217;s former developmental territory.\u00a0 Rusev would spend two years down in FCW, being managed by<strong> Raquel Diaz<\/strong> (<strong>Shaul Guerrero<\/strong>) &#8211; the future wife of his future manager, <strong>Aiden English<\/strong>.\u00a0 A collection of injuries &#8211; most notably a broken neck in 2012 &#8211; would cut short Rusev&#8217;s promising FCW tenure.\u00a0 He returned on May 30, 2013 to what was now called NXT.\u00a0 In his comeback match, he lost in a battle royal to crown the challenger for the NXT Championship.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66930\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66930\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66930\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Alexander-Rusev.jpg\" alt=\"Alexander Rusev\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Alexander-Rusev.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Alexander-Rusev-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66930\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Brief stints of being managed by <strong>Sylvester Lefort<\/strong> and teaming with<strong> Scott Dawson<\/strong> ultimately led to Rusev joining future wife, <strong>Lana<\/strong>.\u00a0 Prior to adopting Lana as his manager, Rusev was floundering in NXT.\u00a0 Losses came quick and fast and it was clear the character was directionless.\u00a0 However, upon joining with Lana, Rusev would go onto defeat a number of main roster talent &#8211; most notably Kofi Kingston.\u00a0 Rusev&#8217;s finisher, The Accolade &#8211; a nasty adaptation of the Camel Clutch &#8211; would regularly put his opponents to sleep.\u00a0 Rusev and Lana would go on to establish themselves as the true Ivan and Ludmilla Drago (a nice Rocky IV reference for you) of the WWE.\u00a0 Just as Drago spoke the famous &#8220;I must break you&#8221; line to Rocky, Rusev adopted &#8220;Rusev crush&#8221;.\u00a0 This character would soon take off on the main roster.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rusev\u2019s greatest moments: WWE Playlist\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YvloUxy68uM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Russians Are Coming<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Rusev made his first main roster appearance at the <em><strong>Royal Rumble<\/strong> <\/em>pay-per-view, 2014.\u00a0 He would compete in the annual<em> Royal Rumble<\/em> match.\u00a0 Perhaps more memorable for being the night <strong>CM Punk<\/strong> walked out of the company and <strong>Daniel Bryan<\/strong> was controversially left out of the main event &#8211; won by <strong>Batista<\/strong>, it will forever be Rusev&#8217;s debut.\u00a0 It took four men to eliminate the Bulgarian &#8211; clearly booked strong &#8211; from the match.\u00a0 He would then remain off of WWE television until the April 7th edition of <strong>RAW<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Zack Ryder vs. Alexander Rusev: Raw, April 7, 2014\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SUDbb4VkX4U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He would return to squash <strong>Zack Ryder<\/strong> (another unfortunate casualty of Black Wednesday) in a short match.\u00a0 Soon after, the comparisons to Drago would only grow louder &#8211; the Bulgarian Brute would take a more Russophilic approach to the ring.\u00a0 Lana &#8211; already dubbed the &#8220;Ravishing Russian&#8221; by WWE commentary &#8211; would have an anti-west, pro-Russian Federation influence on her client.\u00a0 Rusev would go on to &#8220;crush&#8221; most of the WWE roster in the name of Russia.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rusev &amp; Lana celebrate their United States Championship conquest: Raw, November 10, 2014\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0DwmrEQAsT4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Instead of celebrating his native Bulgaria &#8211; a map of which is tattooed on his arm &#8211; he would celebrate Russia.\u00a0 Upon winning the US Championship from <strong>Sheamus<\/strong> on an episode of RAW &#8211; during an impressive undefeated streak which went on for thirty-six matches &#8211; Russia&#8217;s adopted son celebrated with the Russian Federation&#8217;s national anthem.\u00a0 He did this with Russian President, Vladimir Putin&#8217;s, face displayed on the titantron.\u00a0 Of course, just as <strong>Nikolai Volkoff<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;evil&#8221; Soviet Russian character was defeated by the likes of the ultra-American personified characters of <strong>Hulk Hogan<\/strong> and <strong>Sgt.<\/strong> Slaughter, Rusev would be met by his own generation&#8217;s incarnation.\u00a0 Of course, Rusev would come face-to-face with <strong>John Cena<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sheamus vs. Rusev - United States Championship Match: WWE Network Exclusive, Nov. 3, 2014\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b9xgKgffQlc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>WrestleMania 31\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>By the time of <em><strong>WrestleMania 31<\/strong><\/em>, Rusev was arguably at the peak of his powers.\u00a0 Undefeated (outside of Royal Rumble eliminations and a disqualification loss at <em><strong>Survivor Series 2014<\/strong><\/em>) and still US Champion, Rusev was here to stay.\u00a0 However, as with any character booked as the &#8220;evil foreigner&#8221;, there is always the worry that after their first defeat, they disappear.\u00a0 Nikolai Volkoff is one such example.\u00a0 <strong>Vladimir Kozlov<\/strong> was perhaps the most fresh reminder &#8211; an undefeated Russian who eventually lost and became <strong>Santino Marella<\/strong>&#8216;s comedy partner.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Santino Marella &amp; Vladimir Kozlov host a tea party with Sheamus in England: Raw, Nov. 8, 2010\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u_UDgp4Xtxw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Fans hoped that Rusev &#8211; who had become a sort of cult favorite &#8211; would not go down the same path.\u00a0 At <em><strong>WWE Fastlane 2015<\/strong><\/em>, Rusev successfully defeated Cena &#8211; who passed out during the Accolade.\u00a0 Of course, this would not be the end of the feud &#8211; Cena never loses feuds to anti-American characters.\u00a0 At <em>WrestleMania 31<\/em>, Rusev &#8211; who memorably entered the match to the Russian anthem inside a tank &#8211; was defeated by John Cena.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FULL MATCH - Rusev vs. John Cena \u2013 U.S. Title Match: WrestleMania 31\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A5wwxXtRfl4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Following WrestleMania 31<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The following month at the <em><strong>Extreme Rules<\/strong><\/em> PPV, Rusev would again lose to John Cena.\u00a0 This time, the defeat would come in the form of a &#8220;Russian chain match&#8221; (if only the Bulgarian knew about the Chain Gang).\u00a0 This is where dissension between the Bulgarian Brute and Lana would be teased.\u00a0 Rusev would send Lana to the back during the defeat.\u00a0 To make matters worse, he would again lose to John Cena a month later at <em><strong>Payback<\/strong><\/em>, this time in an &#8220;I Quit&#8221; match, after Lana conceded defeat.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WWE Network: Lana puts an end to the &quot;I Quit&quot; Match between John Cena and Rusev: WWE Payback 2015\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UpEs7lzA8IU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>All of the hype surrounding Rusev was gone.\u00a0 The mystique completely destroyed.\u00a0 Russia&#8217;s adopted son was no longer the dominant bastion of anti-American pride he once was.\u00a0 The following night, Rusev formally fired Lana and returned to being the Bulgarian Brute.\u00a0 Until 2017, he was involved in a myriad of meaningless feuds, outside of his <strong>League of Nations<\/strong> union with Sheamus, <strong>Alberto Del Rio<\/strong> and <strong>Wade Barrett<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66936\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66936\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66936\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/The-League-of-Nations.jpg\" alt=\"Rusev and the League\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/The-League-of-Nations.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/The-League-of-Nations-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66936\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>It&#8217;s Rusev Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Whereas similar characters like Vladimir Kozlov were unable to survive after their initial defeat, Rusev somehow persevered.\u00a0 As mentioned earlier, Rusev was a cult hero to a large portion of the WWE universe.\u00a0 After entering <em>WrestleMania 31<\/em> on a tank, his cult status was only solidified.\u00a0 It also helped that Rusev has a strong Twitter presence.\u00a0 On social media, Barnyashev&#8217;s likable personality is often displayed through funny and heartfelt Tweets.\u00a0 He was able to translate this personality to the ring through the next incarnation of his character: Rusev Day.\u00a0 Linking up with Aiden English (another Black Wednesday release), who would become the new mouthpiece of Rusev in Lana&#8217;s absence, created a universally beloved duo.\u00a0 Whereas they were initially heels, arrogantly citing every day as Rusev Day, the catchphrase somehow caught on.\u00a0 Upon their entrances to the ring, fans would lavish them with a chorus of &#8220;Rusev Day&#8221; chants.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Are The New Day celebrating Rusev Day?: SmackDown LIVE, Oct. 17, 2017\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xyeMvhMRrpE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Turn to Babyface<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For the first time, he was able to display aspects of his hilarious personality.\u00a0 During a backstage WWE segment, wearing a hooded sweater, he specified that with the hood up, &#8220;hoodie Rusev is unstoppable.&#8221;\u00a0 He had segments of celebrating Rusev Day with the <strong>New Day<\/strong>.\u00a0 During one segment, <strong>Xavier Woods<\/strong> hilariously played Rusev&#8217;s theme song on the trombone.\u00a0 Rusev and English would turn face for the first time in both of their careers.\u00a0 Eventually, they would welcome Lana as the third member of the Rusev Day stable.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lana erupts over Rusev Day&#039;s Mixed Match Challenge surprise celebration\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sdyhxc1W6F4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Eventually, in October of 2018, English would turn on Rusev &#8211; citing Lana as a negative influence on Rusev and Rusev Day.\u00a0 This would culminate in a match and victory of Rusev on the October 23rd edition of <strong>SmackDown Live<\/strong>.\u00a0 Rusev would win a third US Championship during the Rusev Day run, but nothing more.\u00a0 Eventually, Rusev would be kept off of TV, in what many deem as an attempt by management to reduce Rusev&#8217;s &#8211; who was never supposed to become so naturally over with the fans &#8211; popularity.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The New Day&#039;s holiday celebration is crashed by Rusev &amp; English: SmackDown LIVE, Dec. 19, 2017\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CXvoyH8XCcU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Feud with Lashley and Eventual Release<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>He would begin feuding with <strong>Bobby Lashley<\/strong> on the September 16th, 2019 episode of RAW.\u00a0 Lashley &#8211; in storyline &#8211; had begun an affair with Lana, who had referred to her real-life husband as a &#8220;sex-addicted control freak&#8221;.\u00a0 What followed was a polarizing, controversial feud (by present-day WWE standards) that would see the two behemoths fight over Lana.\u00a0 Eventually, the married couple would have an on-screen, kayfabe divorce, with Lana &#8220;marrying&#8221;\u00a0 Lashley shortly after.\u00a0 The whole feud left a foul taste with fans.\u00a0 Though it was entertaining in parts, it did all involved no favors.\u00a0 Rusev wrestled his last match on February 17th, 2020, in a losing effort with <strong>Humberto Carillo<\/strong> against Bobby Lashley and <strong>Angel Garza<\/strong>.\u00a0 Rusev Day had finally come to an end.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rusev &amp; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What Next for Rusev?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Though many will argue Rusev&#8217;s character was mishandled and unfairly treated for years, Miroslav Barnyashev managed to survive within the WWE sphere for almost ten years.\u00a0 That is an impressive feat in itself and is indicative of the likability and talent of Barnyashev.\u00a0 However, it is certainly a crime that he never managed to achieve a big world title victory.\u00a0 Especially during the peak of Rusev Day, where he was the most over superstar on the roster.\u00a0 Rusev&#8217;s release may be upsetting to many given the circumstances, but he is a talented man.\u00a0 What next for WWE&#8217;s former Bulgarian Brute?
