For many, that\u2019s a career in\u00a0<strong>WWE<\/strong>. But sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination. In LWOPW\u2019s newest feature, \u201cBefore They Were Famous,\u201d we take a look at the pre-WWE careers of some of the company\u2019s top current stars, following along on their road to superstardom. This series continues with a focus on women&#8217;s division star Asuka.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She is a former WWE women&#8217;s tag team champion, former Smackdown women&#8217;s champion, winner of the first-ever women&#8217;s royal rumble, holder of the longest NXT Women&#8217;s Championship reign in history at 510 days, and has the longest undefeated streak in WWE history as she went 914 days without defeat racking up over 240 wins.\u00a0 She is the empress of tomorrow Asuka!\u00a0 Asuka has accomplished so much in her career with WWE but what many may not know is she debuted all the way back in 2004 and had a successful run in the Joshi scene before joining the WWE.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Debut<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Asuka had her debut match in 2004 for <strong>Major Girl&#8217;s Fighting AtoZ<\/strong> under her real name <strong>Kanako Urai<\/strong>.\u00a0 She was trained by <strong>BattleArts<\/strong> alumni\u00a0<strong>Yuki Ishikawa\u00a0<\/strong>who had a shoot fight background, including a fight in PRIDE.\u00a0 She wrestled a series of exhibition matches as Urai before her debut before officially debuting in June at Korakuen Hall as <strong>Kana<\/strong>.\u00a0 In late 2004 she competed in\u00a0<strong>All Japan Women&#8217;s Pro Wrestling (AJW)<\/strong>&#8216;s Tag League The Best alongside the legendary\u00a0<strong>Yumiko Hotta\u00a0<\/strong>and finished as a runner up.\u00a0 Asuka got to share the ring with many legends such as Hotta,\u00a0<strong>Jaguar Yokota<\/strong>, <strong>Manami Toyota<\/strong>, and many more.\u00a0 Asuka wouldn&#8217;t have much success in her early days and retired on March 19th, 2006<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Return &amp; Passion Red<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Passion Red (Nanae Takahashi, Kana, and Natsuki*Taiyo) were such a quality team that didn&#39;t last incredibly long. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VW52c1JDFv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/VW52c1JDFv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Puro Central Shop (@purocentralshop) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/purocentralshop\/status\/763810101383794688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 11, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Asuka would return to wrestling in September 2007 against <strong>Nanae Takahashi\u00a0<\/strong>for\u00a0<strong>Pro Wrestling SUN<\/strong>.\u00a0 In\u00a0<strong>NEO Ladies\u00a0<\/strong>the two would form the faction Passion Red alongside\u00a0<strong>Natsuki Taiyo.<\/strong>\u00a0 The trio would team together until 2010 and was responsible for Asuka&#8217;s first title win when she and Takahashi won the NEO tag team championships.\u00a0 The group&#8217;s main adversaries in NEO were The Amandra Revolution as well as NEO&#8217;s main unit.\u00a0 The group held several Passion Red produce shows as well before Kana&#8217;s decision to leave the group in 2010.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Triple Tails, WAVE &amp; SMASH Success<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66739\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Asuka-Triple-Tails.jpg\" alt=\"Asuka\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Asuka-Triple-Tails.jpg 450w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Asuka-Triple-Tails-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Asuka-Triple-Tails-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Asuka-Triple-Tails-265x198.jpg 265w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Asuka would join another faction soon after her Passion Red departure as she formed Triple Tails alongside <strong>Io Shirai<\/strong> (who left to join Stardom) and her sister <strong>Mio Shirai<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Pro Wrestling WAVE\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>SMASH Wrestling\u00a0<\/strong>also became two of her regular stomping grounds.\u00a0 This began a successful spell for Asuka as she would kick off her legendary series with\u00a0<strong>Meiko Satomura\u00a0<\/strong>at a self-produced Kana Pro show.\u00a0 2011 would see the next fight between Kana and Satomura at a Triple Tails produced show, she would also have her most successful year to date winning the SMASH Diva Championship, her first singles title, winning the Catch The WAVE tournament, made her US debut for <strong>SHIMMER<\/strong>, and capped it all of by winning the Dual Shock Wave tournament alongside\u00a0<strong>Ayumi Kurihara\u00a0<\/strong>to become the first-ever WAVE tag team champions.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u83ef\u540dvs\u91cc\u6751\u660e\u8863\u5b50\u3000Kana VS Meiko Satomura - 2-13-2011 (Triple Tails Osaka event)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qx1B35rVcnw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; Controversial Match With Minoru Suzuki<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66741\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66741\" style=\"width: 337px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66741\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Asuka-vs-Minoru-Suzuki-e1586816889672.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"337\" height=\"600\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: @WWEAsuka<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>2012 and 2013 were more of the same for Asuka as she continued to win titles.\u00a0 In 2012 she got involved with\u00a0<strong>DDTPro\u00a0<\/strong>winning the Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship five times and became a two-time SMASH Diva Champion.\u00a0 She became a two-time WAVE tag champion alongside Mio Shirai and became JWP Openweight Champion as she made JWP her second home replacing the now-defunct SMASH.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jBvVE1gCcIc<\/p>\n<p>2014 would see Asuka take part in her most controversial match to date, we&#8217;ve all seen the gifs of <strong>Minoru Suzuki<\/strong> beating up Asuka.\u00a0 This clip is from a Kana Pro show at Korakuen Hall where Asuka teamed with\u00a0<strong>Pro Wrestling NOAH<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<strong>Naomichi Marufuji\u00a0<\/strong>to take on Satomura and Suzuki.\u00a0 For any that haven&#8217;t seen the match, it is worth it just to see the sheer toughness displayed by Asuka.\u00a0 She ended 2014 as a double champion in\u00a0<strong>REINA\u00a0<\/strong>as she teamed with\u00a0<strong>Arisa Nakajima\u00a0<\/strong>to win the REINA World Tag Team Championships before defeating now-UFC alumni <strong>Syuri.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Syuri vs Kana(WWE&#039;s Asuka) 2014\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wmcVnFE6LEE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; Signing With WWE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66754\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66754\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66754\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Kana-Signs-With-WWE-e1586817754745.jpg\" alt=\"Asuka\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: wwe.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At a Kana Pro show in February 2015 Asuka wrestled her only student\u00a0<strong>Konami\u00a0<\/strong>in her official debut.\u00a0 Konami, now wrestling for Stardom, shows many of Kana&#8217;s influences in her wrestling style adopting a submission-based approach, utilizing stiff strikes, and wrestles barefoot like Kana.\u00a0 She would team with Konami just two months later at a JWP show as she fought Meiko Satomura one last time in a tag match also involving <strong>Comand Bolshoi.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>In September it was announced that she has signed with the WWE and would become Asuka and made her NXT debut one month later at\u00a0<em>NXT Takeover: Respect\u00a0<\/em>defeating Dana Brooke and kicking off her unbeaten streak that would go down in history<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[ Konami Debut Match ] vs Kana ( WWE&#039;s Asuka )\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QK7C-0uh4pA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
