Last week&#8217;s first empty arena show showed that AEW was well up to the task, producing one of the company&#8217;s most compelling shows to date that saw the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2020\/03\/18\/the-dark-order-reveals-the-exalted-one-as\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">debut of former WWE Superstar <strong>Brodie Lee<\/strong><\/a> (formerly Luke Harper) arrive as the <strong>Dark Orde<\/strong>r&#8217;s Exalted One and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2020\/03\/18\/matt-hardy-brings-vanguard-1-and-the-broken-brilliance-to-aew\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">the AEW debut of &#8220;Broken&#8221; <strong>Matt Hardy<\/strong><\/a>, who joined <strong>The Elite<\/strong> in their war against <strong>Chris Jericho<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Inner Circle<\/strong>. In fact, their first encounter together was shortly after Jericho brought Y2J to the WWE Universe. In December of 1999, &#8220;Y2J&#8221; Chris Jericho teamed up with <strong>Too Cool<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Brian Christopher &amp; Scotty 2 Hottie<\/strong> to face <strong>The Hardy Boyz<\/strong> at a WWF Live Event in Madison Square Garden in New York City.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65628\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65628\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65628\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/03\/chris-jericho-reveals-vince-russos-reaction-to-his-wwe-debut-e1585173929712.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65628\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first time they competed together was in 2000, when, on a May episode of <em><strong>WWE SmackDown<\/strong><\/em>, Jericho teamed up with the Hardy Boyz to face the trio of <strong>Kurt Angle, Edge &amp; Christian.\u00a0<\/strong>It would lead to Jericho and the Hardys teaming somewhat frequently, facing <strong>T &amp; A (Test &amp; Albert) &amp; Val Venis<\/strong> on <em><strong>Raw<\/strong><\/em> two weeks later. The trio would reunite later that summer and into the fall, for a series of encounters against <strong>The Radicalz<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Chris Benoit, Perry Saturn<\/strong>, and <strong>Dean Malenko<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The two&#8217;s first one-on-one encounter occurred on February 5, 2001, when Chris Jericho defended his WWE Intercontinental Championship against Matt Hardy on <em>Raw<\/em> at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, but a few months later the two were tag-teaming again, this time together in a handicap match against Edge, Christian &amp; <strong>Rhyno<\/strong>. Jericho would soon form a tag team with fellow Canadian Chris Benoit, which often put the two against the Hardys in tag team action fighting for the tag team titles.<\/p>\n<p>In 2002, the two met in singles action again, this time on\u00a0<em>SmackDown<\/em>, and it would be two years before the two would cross paths again in non-Royal Rumble encounters. First, in Mixed Tag Team action, Jericho &amp; <strong>Trish Stratus<\/strong> faced Matt Hardy &amp; <strong>Molly Holly<\/strong> on\u00a0<em>Raw\u00a0<\/em>in February 2004, followed by Matt Hardy finally gaining his first singles victory over Jericho on the <em>Raw\u00a0<\/em>after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WrestleMania_XX\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WrestleMania XX<\/a>. A month later, Jericho would get that victory back.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout 2008 and 2009, Jericho and Hardy would meet each other, but it was sporadic and mostly in multi-person matches like 6-man tag teams or Triple Threats. Their final singles match was a Qualifying Match for the 2010 <em><strong>Elimination Chamber<\/strong><\/em>, when Jericho defeated Matt Hardy on\u00a0<em>SmackDown<\/em> on February 2 in Memphis, Tennesse. In televised singles action, Chris Jericho holds a 4-1 record over Matt Hardy.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SmackDown: Matt Hardy vs. Chris Jericho - Elimination\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jnncFyzGKM0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Since their last encounter, Matt Hardy left the WWE in 2011 and worked for TNA\/IMPACT and Ring of Honor, and made his return to WWE in spectacular fashion at <strong><em>WrestleMania 33<\/em><\/strong> in 2017. Unfortunately, Jericho had departed WWE just months earlier, heading to <strong>New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW)<\/strong> that November, and ultimately AEW upon the new promotion&#8217;s launch in January of 2019. Now with both men firmly in the spotlight of AEW&#8217;s storylines, it&#8217;s only a matter of time until a rivalry is reborn.
