he was with them twice prior, released in 2001 and then again in 2003 &#8211; till now, Bryan has further established himself as what can only be described as a pro-wrestling legend.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8748\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8748\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8748\" src=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/10\/the-changing-body-image-of-wwe-wrestlers-1438344391-e1508518945466.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"338\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8748\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Daniel Bryan&#8217;s Retirement (2016-2018)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In a world where the term &#8220;GOAT&#8221; is thrown so loosely around, Bryan is a genuine contender.\u00a0 In 2016, Bryan&#8217;s career was brought to a premature end.\u00a0 Years of wear and tear meant that Bryan &#8211; a self-described pro-wrestling &#8220;addict&#8221; &#8211; would have to leave the sport he had given his life to.\u00a0 He would hang up his boots &#8211; trading them in for sweaters and suits.\u00a0 Instead of warring against the WWE establishment, he would temporarily become the <em><strong>SmackDown Live<\/strong> <\/em>General Manager.\u00a0 Two years of injuries &#8211; which began almost immediately after his iconic victory over <strong>The Authority<\/strong> at <em><strong>WrestleMania XXX<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; brought a cruel end to a career which had reached its zenith.\u00a0 Daniel Bryan, beloved by so many, was to never wrestle again.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Daniel Bryan bids farewell to the WWE Universe: Raw, February 8, 2016\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6KzD06Wpofw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Bryan&#8217;s retirement would not keep him off our screens, however.\u00a0 As mentioned, he became the <em>SmackDown<\/em> General Manager.\u00a0 Along with a freshly returned<strong> Shane McMahon<\/strong>, the GM\/Commissioner duo would make <em>SmackDown Live<\/em> <em>cool <\/em>for a time.\u00a0 The two possessed a clear, warming natural chemistry and their bond was a change of pace from the traditional WWE archetype of evil authority figure.\u00a0 After years &#8211; which felt more like an eternity &#8211; of The Authority ruling both brands with a despotic iron fist, the babyface duo were exactly what was needed to shake things up heading into the &#8220;New Era&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shane McMahon &amp; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Bryan, despite transitioning to a less featured role, still remained remarkably popular.\u00a0 Choruses of &#8220;YES!&#8221; chants still rained down upon him every time he entered the ring.\u00a0 With the help of cult favorite <strong>WWE Network<\/strong> show, <strong>Talking Smack<\/strong>, Bryan continued to keep the WWE audience entertained and yearning for a possible in-ring return.\u00a0 No matter how much we all wanted it, there was a growing feeling &#8211; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He feuded with <strong>The Miz<\/strong> after his memorable,<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/IATSgo0_IF4\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> heated Talking Smack promo on Bryan<\/a>.\u00a0 Miz would continue the feud by adopting his own version of the &#8220;YES! kick&#8221;, a signature Bryan maneuver.\u00a0 He would continuously poke jabs at Bryan.\u00a0 This feud made even the most ardent comeback deniers feel this <em>must<\/em> be leading <em>somewhere<\/em>.\u00a0 A rare long-term WWE rivalry spanning almost a decade, from Daniel Bryan&#8217;s time as Miz&#8217;s &#8220;rookie&#8221; in the old version of<strong> NXT<\/strong>, it looked like we would finally be getting a pay off at <em><strong>WrestleMania XXXIV<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Miz berates his Rookie Daniel Bryan\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/__mfJKQ2ZPY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This never happened.\u00a0 The Miz would ditch the feud to film The Marine 6: Close Quarters &#8211; a feud which was already finished off after Miz&#8217;s draft to<em> <strong>RAW<\/strong> <\/em>midway through 2017.\u00a0 The long-awaited return of Daniel Bryan now seemed like a far away dream.\u00a0 Bryan&#8217;s time was instead taken by the <em>SmackDown<\/em> heel duo of <strong>Kevin Owens<\/strong> and <strong>Sami Zayn<\/strong>.\u00a0 Both Shane McMahon and Bryan would begin feuding with the Canadian team, a feud which began in November 2017.\u00a0 The rivalry &#8211; which grew very heated, including <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Qp0J7P62NFU\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Owens giving <strong>Vince McMahon<\/strong> a <em>nasty<\/em> beating<\/a> &#8211; looked like it was leading somewhere.\u00a0 For the first time since his feud with The Miz, it looked like something was about to happen with Daniel Bryan.\u00a0 That something was, of course, his long-awaited return.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Daniel Bryan addresses WWE Universe for first time after being medically cleared to wrestle | ESPN\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HGmxPqR7e0o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Return of Daniel Bryan<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After over two years of seeking medical advice from various neurologists on whether he could compete again, it was announced on March 20th, 2018, that Daniel Bryan <em>would<\/em> wrestle again.\u00a0 This now confirmed what we had been suspecting for weeks.\u00a0 It was to be Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan versus Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn at <em>WrestleMania XXXIV.<\/em>\u00a0 Today is March 22nd, 2020 and we have had two years to assess the return of Daniel Bryan.\u00a0 Has it lived up to the heightened fanfare surrounding the return of one of wrestling&#8217;s most beloved superstars? Yes!\u00a0 Since returning to the ring in 2018, Bryan has gifted us with numerous good-to-great matches and feuds.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Daniel Bryan unleashes on Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens during his in-ring return: WrestleMania 34\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0bL7_9sZh6E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After his triumphant return at <em>WrestleMania XXXIV<\/em>, Bryan then entered a feud with <strong>Big Cass<\/strong>.\u00a0 This feud was clearly designed as a means to get Cassidy over as a legit heel.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the character resorted to schoolyard bully tactics, mocking Bryan for his shorter stature.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the feud would only serve to cool off much of the Bryan return hype.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Big Cass plays mind games with Daniel Bryan: SmackDown LIVE, May 1, 2018\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e_imGDjCIuQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The feud was not helped by WWE management souring on Big Cass during the feud.\u00a0 There were reports of behavior issues, public intoxication and a single, on-screen issue surrounding Big Cass&#8217; unprofessional treatment of a little person hired to impersonate Bryan.\u00a0 Bryan would defeat Cass at back-to-back pay-per-views &#8211; <em><strong>Backlash<\/strong> <\/em>and <em><strong>Money in the Bank<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 This would signal the end of the feud and Big Cass was gone from the company shortly afterwards.\u00a0 Bryan, despite being victorious, gained nothing from the feud and the excitement surrounding his return had dwindled ever so slightly.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Daniel Bryan puts Big Cass in his place: SmackDown LIVE, May 15, 2018\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8uUtnD8XPio?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Bryan then entered a short-lived feud with <strong>The Bludgeon Brothers<\/strong> (<strong>Harper<\/strong> and Rowan), which involved a <strong>Team Hell No<\/strong> reunion with long-time ally\/foe,<strong> Kane<\/strong>.\u00a0 Team Hell No were still a popular tag team and as there was clearly an effort by management to get The Bludgeon Brothers over as a dominant monster tag team, it was only fitting that Team Hell No put them over.\u00a0 Perhaps to protect Bryan, the eventual PPV match between the teams at Extreme Rules became a handicap match, after Kane never got to compete (he was attacked prior to the match taking place).\u00a0 The sheer strength and numbers advantage meant a first big defeat for Bryan.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Daniel Bryan digs deep against The Bludgeon Brothers: WWE Extreme Rules 2018 (WWE Network Exclusive)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KdXwW0UR3oc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After the Bludgeon Brothers feud, it finally happened.\u00a0 Bryan would turn his attention to the one man who &#8211; more than anyone &#8211; antagonized him during his absence from the ring.\u00a0 The man who openly mocked his retirement and medical condition on Talking Smack.\u00a0 Yes, Bryan would return to the almost ten year old rivalry with The Miz.\u00a0 The feud would have some questionable, weird spots &#8211; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It has been said many a time, but Miz and Bryan are the perfect rivalry.\u00a0 Bryan is the beloved, natural babyface.\u00a0 The humble pro-wrestler who began his career wrestling in front of a mere dozen or so fans.\u00a0 A man who rose through the independent circuit to the pinnacle of the WWE, defying the odds and the fate usually given to WWE performers of his size.\u00a0 Bryan&#8217;s ambition was once professionally assessed and his score came back so remarkably low his success even more so impressive.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;WWE did this personality test with some of their more successful wrestlers to see, like, \u2018are there some common traits among these people that makes them successful, so when we are recruiting people we can look for these traits to make them more successful&#8230; and so, they ask you all these questions, yada, yada, yada. I got my test results back and the lady was just baffled. She was like, \u2018you have the lowest ambition score I have ever seen!&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is safe to declare, therefore, that it is something resembling a miracle that Bryan is the superstar he is today.\u00a0 However, there is no denying his in-ring talent and natural charisma which has to be singled out as the reason for Bryan resonating so well with the <strong>WWE Universe<\/strong>, in spite of his lack of ambition.\u00a0 If you compare Bryan with Miz, you notice some differences.\u00a0 Miz was a reality TV star, on MTV&#8217;s The Real World.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WWE Star The Miz Looks Back On His Time On &#039;The Real World: Back To New York&#039; | Access\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8QllEdox-EA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Though a passionate wrestling fan in his youth, Miz wasn&#8217;t someone with the natural athleticism or in-ring prowess to have conquered the indies prior to his WWE career in the way Bryan did.\u00a0 Miz could act and he could certainly talk with the confidence one would expect a WWE promo specialist to possess.\u00a0 Therefore, after impressing on the 2004 edition of <strong>Tough Enough<\/strong>, Miz skipped the indies and headed straight to the WWE.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Miz breaks down his Tough Enough journey - WWE #ToughEnough\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RWTIL9-Yy3U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The difference in pro-wrestling journeys is the clear reason for fans naturally warming to Bryan and not taking so kindly to Miz.\u00a0 It took Miz years to win over the fans as a solid, committed professional wrestler.\u00a0 Upon his return to the company in 2009 and his re-debut in 2010, Bryan was an instant hit.\u00a0 So going into their 2018 feud, there was a feeling that this was the true end to a near-decade long feud.\u00a0 A feud of two men with clearly different views on what it means to be a pro-wrestler.\u00a0 The Miz would win the feud, cheating to victory with brass knuckles at <em><strong>SummerSlam<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 The follow-up match was a mixed tag match at <em><strong>Hell in a Cell<\/strong><\/em>, with Brie Bella and <strong>Maryse<\/strong> accompanying their husbands.\u00a0 Maryse would score the pinfall for Team Mizanin, ending the feud.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Daniel Bryan &amp; Brie Bella punish The Miz &amp; Maryse with &quot;Yes!&quot; Kicks: WWE Hell in a Cell 2018\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Gkoto5S3Jpg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In 2014, whilst Daniel Bryan was at the pinnacle of the wrestling world, there was another man making waves elsewhere.\u00a0 For years, there were two men who would most commonly appear in fan shouts for &#8220;best in the world&#8221;.\u00a0 Daniel Bryan was one, <strong>AJ Styles<\/strong> was the other.\u00a0 Whilst Daniel Bryan was headlining <em>WrestleMania XXX<\/em>, AJ Styles was in the midst of a highly popular return to the independent circuit.\u00a0 The same independent circuit conquered by <strong>Bryan Danielson<\/strong> years earlier.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"3 AMAZING Bryan Danielson Matches in ROH! | ROH 18th Anniversary Collection\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7-tcrmjagG0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Heel Turn<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Whereas their paths had crossed in the past, never had they done so on a bigger stage than WWE.\u00a0 Now, they would meet again.
