Teams will be announced on the New Year\u2019s Day edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WWENXT?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@WWENXT<\/a>! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jI4qTE42KH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/jI4qTE42KH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; WWE NXT (@WWENXT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WWENXT\/status\/1207506351397707782?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">December 19, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Beginning in 2015, the tournament has been held annually each year (with the exception of 2017), being used to honor the legendary <strong>WWE<\/strong> Hall of Famer <strong>Dusty Rhodes<\/strong>, who played a huge part in the early days of <em>NXT<\/em> as a senior producer and a trainer when it turned from a game show into WWE&#8217;s developmental system. The first two tournaments saw the winners presented with a trophy in the style of Rhodes&#8217; wrestling boots, with the following two tournaments also seeing the winners granted an opportunity at the NXT Tag Team Championships at that year&#8217;s <em><strong>TakeOver<\/strong><\/em> during <em><strong>WrestleMania<\/strong><\/em> weekend.<\/p>\n<p>In order, <strong>Samoa Joe<\/strong> and <strong>Finn Balor<\/strong>, <strong>The Authors of Pain<\/strong> (<strong>Akam<\/strong> and <strong>Rezar<\/strong>), <strong>The Undisputed ERA<\/strong> (<strong>Adam Cole<\/strong> and <strong>Kyle O&#8217;Reilly<\/strong>), and <strong>Aleister Black<\/strong> and <strong>Ricochet<\/strong> have won the tournaments, last defeating <strong>Baron Corbin<\/strong> and <strong>Rhyno<\/strong> (at <em><strong>NXT TakeOver: Respect<\/strong><\/em>), <strong>TM-61<\/strong> (<strong>Shane Thorne<\/strong> and <strong>Nick Miller<\/strong>) (at <em><strong>NXT TakeOver: Toronto<\/strong><\/em>), both The Authors of Pain, and <strong>Pete Dunne<\/strong> and <strong>Roderick Strong<\/strong> (at <em><strong>NXT TakeOver: New Orleans<\/strong><\/em>), and <strong>The Forgotten Sons<\/strong> (<strong>Wesley Blake<\/strong> and <strong>Steve Cutler<\/strong>) (on the March 27th, 2019 edition of <em>NXT<\/em>). The Undisputed ERA would retain their Tag Team Championships over AOP, and Dunne and Strong after Roderick turned on The Bruiserweight, while Black and Ricochet were unsuccessful in their attempt at winning the Tag Team Championships from <strong>The War Raiders<\/strong> (<strong>Hanson<\/strong> and <strong>Rowe<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><em>NXT<\/em>&#8216;s tag team division is booming right now, with several great teams who can easily fill out the field, whether it remains an eight-team competition or reverts to the sixteen-team format from 2015 and 2016.
