{"id":2955,"date":"2017-03-08T20:55:29","date_gmt":"2017-03-09T01:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonprowrestling.com\/?p=2955"},"modified":"2017-03-08T20:55:29","modified_gmt":"2017-03-09T01:55:29","slug":"njpw-45-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2017\/03\/08\/njpw-45-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"45 Years of Strong Style: Looking At NJPW 45th Anniversary Show (3\/6\/17)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When <strong>Antonio Inoki<\/strong> split from his partnership with the late, legendary <strong>Giant Baba<\/strong> and the <strong>Japanese Pro Wrestling Alliance<\/strong>, few likely could have imagined the juggernaut he was going to create shortly afterward.\u00a0While Baba went on to form <strong>All Japan Pro Wrestling<\/strong>,\u00a0 Inoki launched <strong>New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW)<\/strong> on March 6, 1972. Forty five\u00a0years later, on March 6, 2017,\u00a0 NJPW delivered an exciting and noteworthy Anniversary Show.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3009\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3009\" style=\"width: 604px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3009\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/Inoki1976.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/Inoki1976.jpg 604w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/Inoki1976-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3009\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: NJPW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some years, the action is very good-solid and everything is almost held in a holding pattern in terms of championship defenses and ongoing feuds.<\/p>\n<p>Not this year.\u00a0 With the annual New Japan Cup set to begin in\u00a0 few short days,\u00a0 the ante was upped\u00a0Monday morning at the Ota General Gymnasium (the same location the debut show was held).<\/p>\n<p>Eight matches were held with five being contested for a championship.\u00a0There was a shake up in the card following\u00a0 a horrific injury suffered by <strong>Tomoaki Honma<\/strong> on the March 3rd &#8220;Road To&#8221; show.\u00a0<strong>Jado<\/strong> planted him with a hanging DDT out of the corner and Honma was immediately unresponsive in movement. He was alert and able to speak but couldn&#8217;t move a muscle.\u00a0He was transported to\u00a0 a hospital ER where he has since regained some movement in his arms and legs.\u00a0 He can not however sit up as of this writing.<\/p>\n<p>The master of the Kokeshi is believed to have suffered damage to the C3 and C4 vertebrae in his neck.\u00a0 He has vowed to return to the ring but when that would be is up in the air indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>Honma and his <strong>Great Bash Heel<\/strong> compadre <strong>Togi Makabe<\/strong> were scheduled to challenge the <strong>CHAOS<\/strong> tandem of <strong>Toru Yano<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Tomohiro Ishii<\/strong> for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships; they were subsequently replaced by <strong>TenCozy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>THE HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The night kicked off with battle tested veteran <strong>Manabu Nakanishi<\/strong> surviving a tenacious Tomoyuki Oka and defeating him via submission with the Torture Rack.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3010\" style=\"width: 777px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3010\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/C1Z9QmgUQAUT6Ac.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"777\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/C1Z9QmgUQAUT6Ac.jpg 777w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/C1Z9QmgUQAUT6Ac-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/C1Z9QmgUQAUT6Ac-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/C1Z9QmgUQAUT6Ac-696x391.jpg 696w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/C1Z9QmgUQAUT6Ac-747x420.jpg 747w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 777px) 100vw, 777px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: NJPW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>CHAOS vs. Suzuki-Gun Rages On.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It has been a mixed bag for <strong>Minoru Suzuki<\/strong> and his assembled army of followers since their return at <em><strong>New Year&#8217;s Dash<\/strong><\/em> back on January 5.<\/p>\n<p>Following\u00a0 a two year exile in <strong>Pro Wrestling NOAH<\/strong>, he led the troops back to NJPW\u00a0with an assault on CHAOS, particularly the reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion <strong>Kazuchika Okada<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Suzuki-Gun<\/strong> seemed primed for another clean sweep of dominance just as they had spread in NOAH.\u00a0They then seemingly hit a brick wall when the <em><strong>New Beginning<\/strong><\/em> PPV events rolled around.<\/p>\n<p>Despite badly damaging Okada&#8217;s leg, Suzuki came up short in his bid for the gold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TAKA Michinoku<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Taichi<\/strong> fell to IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions <strong>Roppongi Vice<\/strong> while <strong>The Killer Elite Squad<\/strong> and <strong>Takashi Iizuka<\/strong> also lost their respective matches.\u00a0To add insult to injury, Killer Elite&#8217;s <strong>Lance Archer<\/strong> is out of action for an undeterminable length of time after undergoing back surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Yet if it sounds all doom and gloom, you clearly haven&#8217;t seen how the mind of Suzuki cunningly operates. While angry over the setbacks, his thought process places him ten steps ahead of all who stand in his way.<\/p>\n<p>His night didn&#8217;t start off red hot as the CHAOS force of Never Champion <strong>Hirooki Goto<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Yoshi-Hashi<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Gedo &amp; Jado<\/strong> defeated <strong>Suzuki<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Davey Boy Smith Jr<\/strong> &amp; <strong>TAKA Michinoku<\/strong> &amp; <strong>El Desperado<\/strong> in a very solid eight man tag team match.\u00a0Yoshi-Hashi shined as he took Suzuki off the apron before submitting Michinoku following Karma.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Suzuki-Gun would bounce back in a major way.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>RPG Vice&#8217;s Beretta and Rocky Romero overcome some tense infighting at the end of 2016 to capture the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships from the <strong>Young Bucks<\/strong> at <em><strong>Wrestle Kingdom 11<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0In the aforementioned successful defense against TAKA &amp; Taichi, they overcome an insane amount of outside involvement to hold onto the gold.<\/p>\n<p>Here they went up against SZG&#8217;s Taichi &amp; Yoshinobu Kanemaru in what was a very good back and forth championship encounter.\u00a0It was the willingness of the challengers to once more bend the rules beyond repair that made the difference.\u00a0They jumped RPG Vice before the match began. That allowed them to work over Romero for several minutes including Taichi using the bell hammer to inflict damage.<\/p>\n<p>RPG Vice fought back and wiped out SZG with stereo suicide dives.\u00a0 Late in the match they connected with Strong Zero on Kanemaru but Taichi&#8217;s valet Miho Abe provided a distraction; it was long enough to allow Taichi and El Desperado to lay out the champions with their own titles.\u00a0Romero kicked out of a Kanemaru tilt-a-whirl DDT but not his top rope DDT and new champions were crowned.<\/p>\n<p>Not satisfied with just taking their titles, SZG continued to assault RPG Vice until Gedo and Jado ran down and cleared the ring.\u00a0It was clear that CHAOS&#8217; <strong>Complete Players<\/strong> were going to be the first challengers to avenge both their faction and their fallen stable mates.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A new solider for the SZG Army.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3005\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3005\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3005\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/C6Pw94eWcAE_9xR.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/C6Pw94eWcAE_9xR.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/C6Pw94eWcAE_9xR-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3005\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: NJPW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After UK standout <strong>Will Ospreay<\/strong> signed with NJPW, he made an immediate splash.\u00a0En route to winning the 2016 Best of The Super Juniors, the CHAOS member took part in several classics including an outstanding, surprisingly controversial bout against <strong>Ricochet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With his success, the news of the arrival of <strong>Zack Sabre Jr<\/strong> was met with utmost enthusiasm and excitement.<\/p>\n<p>Considered by many as one of the best pure wrestlers in the world, ZSJ came into his title challenge of RevPro&#8217;s British Heavyweight Champion <strong>Katsuyori Shibata<\/strong> with a ton of momentum; he had just only recently ended <strong>EVOLVE<\/strong> Champion <strong>Timothy Thatcher<\/strong>&#8216;s record setting reign as well as already reigning as the <strong>Pro Wrestling Guerilla (PWG)<\/strong>\u00a0Champion as well.<\/p>\n<p>Their encounter was another excellent bout on the card.\u00a0 Very early on they exchanged scientific and mat holds as effortlessly as you&#8217;ll ever see.\u00a0Sabre Jr would work over Shibata&#8217;s shoulder while evading his deadly Penalty Kick.\u00a0 Shibata mounted a comeback and planted his foe with\u00a0a half dragon suplex.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3007\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3007\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3007\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/04_35.0-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/04_35.0.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/04_35.0-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/04_35.0-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/04_35.0-696x464.jpg 696w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/04_35.0-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/04_35.0-630x420.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: NJPW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shibata seemed primed to retain his title when Suzuki-Gun made their presence felt in the biggest way of the night.\u00a0 Shibata went after Minoru which is what the SZG leader wanted.\u00a0Davey Boy Smith Jr laid out Shibata from behind.\u00a0 Suzuki locked in his patented sleeper choke an then delivered the Gotch Piledriver.\u00a0 That enabled Sabre Jr to land the Penalty Kick and capture the title.<\/p>\n<p>As if that all wasn&#8217;t shocking enough, ZSJ formally joined Suzuki-Gun and donned their tee-shirt as Suzuki cut a promo on Shibata as well as CHAOS.\u00a0The addition of Sabre Jr is a major one and fills a void left by Archer&#8217;s injury.\u00a0 It also fascinatingly puts him at direct odds with Ospreay and CHAOS.<\/p>\n<p>With his title win, Sabre Jr accomplished what Ospreay failed to do at <em>New Beginning<\/em> in Osaka, though he pushed Shibata to the limit.\u00a0 One has to think they will eventually clash both in <strong>RevPro<\/strong> and NJPW\u00a0rings.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A banner night for other factions.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Two of NJPW&#8217;s other villainous factions made big statements on this celebratory card.<\/p>\n<p>After a successful return to action at the pair of <em><strong>Honor Rising<\/strong><\/em> shows (co-promoted with <strong>Ring of Honor<\/strong>),\u00a0<strong>Kenny Omega<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Bullet Club<\/strong> aimed to continue their momentum as several of their members are set for action in the New Japan Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Omega teamed with <strong>Bad Luck Fale<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Guerillas of Destiny (<\/strong><strong>Tama Tonga\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong> Tanga Loa)\u00a0<\/strong>to defeat the team of <strong>Yuji Nagata<\/strong> &amp; <strong>David Finlay &amp; Jushin Liger &amp; Tiger Mask IV<\/strong> in a very good eight man tag team match.\u00a0Most notable was Finlay aggressively going after the BC&#8217;s Underboss throughout the match. In the end however Fale pinned him following a massive Grenade.<\/p>\n<p>In the NJ Cup&#8217;s opening round, Omega faces Tomohiro Ishii, Yujiro Takahashi battles <strong>Juice Robinson<\/strong>, Fale goes up against <strong>Michael Elgin<\/strong>, Loa takes on Yuji Nagata (replacing Honma), and Tonga will meet Yano.<\/p>\n<p>Not to be outdone, <strong>Tetsuya Naito<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Los Ingobernables de Japon<\/strong> went into battle in two key matches.<\/p>\n<p>Naito led Never Openweight Six Man Tag Team Champions <strong>BUSHI, EVIL<\/strong>, and <strong>SANADA<\/strong> to victory over <strong>Hiroshi Tanahashi<\/strong>, Michael Elgin, <strong>KUSHIDA<\/strong>, and Juice Robinson in a great, exciting eight man tag team bout.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, EVIL continued an assault on Tanahashi as the two will meet in the NJ Cup&#8217;s opening round.\u00a0 He delivered the EVIL and stood over New Japan&#8217;s Ace.<\/p>\n<p>LIJ&#8217;s other title holder <strong>Hiromu Takahashi<\/strong> had his hands full defending the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship against the Funky Weapon himself <strong>Rysuke Taguchi<\/strong>.\u00a0Several hard slaps from the champion brought out Taguchi&#8217;s serious side and he reminded everyone just how talented he is when\u00a0 not going for laughs.\u00a0 He was able to land the Dodon but a frog splash attempt saw Takahashi get his knees up in time.\u00a0Taguchi survived a death valley driver in the corner to counter the Time Bomb with an ankle lock.\u00a0 However Takahashi was able to land a second one late in the match and deliver said Time Bomb for the victory.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward KUSHIDA emerged seeking his return match for the title he lost at Wrestle Kingdom 11.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>New Champions.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3008\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3008\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3008\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/tumblr_omdmgvJj1Q1qj1jhno5_r1_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/tumblr_omdmgvJj1Q1qj1jhno5_r1_1280.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/03\/tumblr_omdmgvJj1Q1qj1jhno5_r1_1280-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3008\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: NJPW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TenCozy made the most of their last minute title bid and defeated Yano and Ishii to win their sixth IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship.<\/p>\n<p>It was a solid back and forth match that could have gone either way.\u00a0Yano and Ishii displayed great teamwork to compliment Yano&#8217;s usual sneaky tactics.\u00a0Kojima tasted steel when Yano removed the corner padding but kicked out of a roll up. He kicked out of a second roll up following a headbutt from Ishii.<\/p>\n<p>Kojima and Ishii squared off in an exchange the crowd loved.
