In the past month, we lost three wrestling legends in <strong>Jimmy &#8220;Superfly&#8221; Snuka<\/strong> (January 15), <strong>Chavo Guerrero Sr.<\/strong> (February 11), and <strong>George &#8220;The Animal&#8221; Steele<\/strong> (February 16), plus former WWE Superstar <strong>Nicole Bass<\/strong>, a day later on February 17. Today we lost a fifth, as news broke this morning that former WWE (then WWWF) World Champion <strong>Ivan Koloff<\/strong> passed away from a long time battle with liver disease. Koloff was 74. The news was first announced by long time friend and rival,\u00a0<strong>Ric Flair<\/strong>, on his Twitter.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I&#39;m Sad To Wake Up And Hear of the passing of my very close friend the Russian Bear Ivan Koloff. At age 18, he left Quebec to become a professional wrestler, heading to Hamilton, Ontario to work with grappler <strong>Jack Kentworth<\/strong> at his wrestling school. Wentworth, a career journeyman, was in the 1956 main event for <strong>Vince McMahon Sr.<\/strong>&#8216;s inaugural card for his <strong>Capitol Wrestling<\/strong> (which would become the WWWF and, ultimately, the WWE), losing to <strong>Antonino Rocca<\/strong>. Photo: ivankoloff.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1967, he returned to Quebec and the <strong>Rougeau<\/strong> family&#8217;s <strong>International Wrestling Association (IWA)<\/strong>, where he developed <strong>&#8220;The Russian Bear&#8221; Ivan Koloff<\/strong>, a dastardly Ukraine born mauler, taking advantage of the rapidly increasing world tensions from the increasing Cold War between the West and the Soviet Union. He was an immediate main event heel and soon caught the attention of his mentor Kentworth&#8217;s former employer, Vincent J. McMahon, and the <strong>World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF)<\/strong>. By 1969, he had joined the WWWF and managed by the dastardly <strong>Captain Lou Albano<\/strong> (long before he was a face in the 1980&#8217;s). He defeated WWWF World Champion Bruno Sammartino for the World Championship at Sammartino &#8211; and WWWF&#8217;s &#8211; hallowed hall, Madison Square Garden, ending Sammartino&#8217;s over seven year reign at the top. Throughout that reign, Sammartino had fought off attempts from such wrestling icons as <strong>Freddie Blassie, Gorilla\u00a0Monsoon, Shohei &#8220;Giant&#8221; Baba, The Crusher, Gene Kiniski, The Sheik, Killer Kowalski<\/strong>, as well as another recently departed Legend, George &#8220;The Animal&#8221; Steele. But the Russian Bear proved too much and the World title became property of the &#8220;enemy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2646\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2646\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2646\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/ivan_koloff.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/ivan_koloff.jpg 642w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/ivan_koloff-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2646\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bruno vs Koloff (Photo: WWE.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alas, Koloff proved to have been a transitional champion for the company, despite his great success as one of the company&#8217;s top heels. Back then, heels rarely held titles for long &#8211; the real money was in the hero champions. With Sammartino taking some time off, the WWWF had already built up Peurto Rican\u00a0star <strong>Pedro Morales<\/strong> as their next face of the company and 21 days after taking the title from Bruno, Koloff lost to the new rising Latino. Koloff would remain a main event star with the company, but by the year&#8217;s end, Koloff departed the WWWF after a three year run with the company, heading to the larger territorial waters of the <strong>National Wrestling Alliance (NWA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2649\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2649\" style=\"width: 499px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2649\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/Ivan_Koloff_-_Oreal_Perras_06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/Ivan_Koloff_-_Oreal_Perras_06.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/Ivan_Koloff_-_Oreal_Perras_06-247x300.jpg 247w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/Ivan_Koloff_-_Oreal_Perras_06-346x420.jpg 346w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: WWE.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He immediately became a star with the territories &#8211; he unsuccessfully challenged <strong>AWA<\/strong> World Champion <strong>Verne Gagne<\/strong> in 1972 &#8211; but found his greatest success with <strong>Jim Crockett<\/strong>&#8216;s NWA region, <strong>Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling<\/strong>, where he was a 4-time Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion 3-time Mid-Atlantic Television Champion, along with numerous tag team reigns. And while he was primarily a Mid-Atlantic and other NWA territorial property, he still made the odd return to the WWWF, with occasional rematches throughout the 70&#8217;s against his former foe, Bruno Sammartino.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2648\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2648\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2648\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/4Vh5rYg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/4Vh5rYg.jpg 600w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/4Vh5rYg-251x300.jpg 251w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/4Vh5rYg-352x420.jpg 352w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2648\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: ivankoloff.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the 1980&#8217;s, with Jim Crockett&#8217;s Mid-Atlantic assuming more and more control over the entire NWA brand (and shortly before becoming <strong>World Championship Wrestling (WCW)<\/strong>), Koloff would form the villainous faction, <strong>The Russians<\/strong>, as the Cold War from the 60&#8217;s became even greater in the 1980&#8217;s with the constant threat of nuclear attack being spouted in the media. Paired with his &#8220;nephew&#8221; <strong>Nikita Koloff<\/strong> as well as another comrade from the Motherland, <strong>Krusher Kruschev<\/strong> (an early gimmick by <strong>Barry Darsow<\/strong>, before he went on to <strong>Demolition Smash<\/strong> and <strong>Repo Man<\/strong>). The Russians would have memorable feuds with the likes of <strong>The Road Warriors (Hawk &amp; Animal)<\/strong> and recently announced WWE Hall of Famers <strong>The Rock N&#8217; Roll Express (Ricky Morton &amp; Robert Gibson)<\/strong>, to name a few.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2653\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2653\" style=\"width: 495px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2653\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-10.59.13-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-10.59.13-AM.png 495w, https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-18-at-10.59.13-AM-300x166.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: ivankoloff.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the early stages of WCW in the late 80&#8217;s, Koloff moved to more of a managerial role, as a &#8220;coach&#8221; for <strong>Paul Jones<\/strong>&#8216; Army, handling <strong>The Barbarian<\/strong> and <strong>Warlord<\/strong> as the <strong>Powers of Pain<\/strong>. They once again feuded with the Road Warriors, but when the Powers of Pain jumped ship to <strong>Vince McMahon Jr.<\/strong>&#8216;s WWF in 1988, Koloff left the company shortly after.
