WWE Saturday Night\u2019s Main Event is gearing up for another show. On July 18th,<\/sup> the classic WWE show will return to the programming schedule, emanating from the world’s most famous arena. Madison Square Garden has been WWE\u2019s backyard since the company began promoting shows, which have been heralded as the mecca of sports entertainment. It’s a stage that the best wrestlers dream of competing in since they started in the business.<\/p>\n

Madison Square Garden has become as big a part of WWE\u2019s history. Throughout the company’s long history, the Garden has hosted some incredible shows. From WrestleMania to Raw, WWE Madison Square Garden<\/a> shows have become entrenched in WWE history as the site of some of the biggest events ever witnessed. Below, we will look at the greatest events to be held in Madison Square Garden.<\/p>\n

The Best WWE Madison Square Garden Shows in History<\/h2>\n

WrestleMania (1985) <\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n

Madison Square Garden was the only choice to host the first WrestleMania. It was considered WWE\u2019s backyard and had been host to various great moments in the years leading up to \u2018Mania. Vince McMahon saw it as the perfect place to showcase his brainchild.<\/p>\n

MSG added that extra sense of importance to WrestleMania, giving the entire night a feeling of grandeur.<\/p>\n

The crowd was on fire for the entire evening, and WWE put together a stacked card for them to enjoy. The WWE Tag Team Championship changed hands when the Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff shocked the world, King Kong Bundy set a WrestleMania record that stood for decades, and Andre the Giant and Big John Studd tried to win thousands by body slamming one another.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t an undercard that would hold up to today\u2019s standards, but it was a perfect representation of WWE\u2019s Golden Era.<\/p>\n

Everything at Madison Square Garden swirled around the main event. Featuring Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper, Bob Orton, and mega star Mr. T, the tag match was the selling point of the entire show. The star power was inside the ring and outside with the additions of Muhammad Ali and Pat Patterson as the special referees. WrestleMania was a huge gamble for WWE, and Madison Square Garden was the site for its biggest triumph.<\/p>\n

Royal Rumble (2000) <\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Royal Rumble\u2019s first venture into Madison Square Garden was a resounding success. Surprisingly, it took 12 years for WWE to start the road to WrestleMania in New York, but the anticipation was well worth the wait. Unlike many Royal Rumbles that had come before it, Royal Rumble 2000<\/a> was not just a one-match pony.<\/p>\n

Yes, the titular match was fantastic with a ton of great Attitude Era moments, and one of the better endings in Royal Rumble history, but there was so much more to the show.<\/p>\n

The Hardy and Dudley Boyz engaged in an incredible tables match that was a precursor to what the tag team division would become. There was the debut of ECW legend Tazz, which, in retrospect, didn\u2019t go anywhere, but on that night, the New York crowd was rabid to see the Human Suplex Machine in WWE.<\/p>\n

Of course, this Royal Rumble can\u2019t be discussed without mentioning the show-stealing WWE Championship match between Triple H and Cactus Jack<\/a>. It included the perfect level of violence and was a star-making moment for the Game. Madison Square Garden was on fire from the opening bell to the closing moments of Royal Rumble 2000.<\/p>\n

Survivor Series (2002)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Survivor Series 2002 entered Madison Square Garden and made history. The traditional Survivor Series matches were gone from the card, but WWE got very creative in presenting various types of elimination matches that maintained the spirit of the Survivor Series.<\/p>\n

The opening tag team tables match was perfect to start the show. It was a crowd favorite and included a shock reunion when Devon Dudley came to the rescue. That, combined with an incredible triple threat elimination for the WWE Tag Team Championships, made this a card that highlighted the strength that tag team wrestling had become.<\/p>\n

Survivor Series 2002 also saw two amazing World Championship matches, one where we saw Brock Lesnar lift the Big Show, and then get betrayed by his advocate. Another featuring Trish Stratus and Victoria<\/a> showing the world the viability of women\u2019s wrestling. Both brought different positives to the card, and both should get a second look from the wrestling world.<\/p>\n

The main event of the night was the perfect show stealer. The inaugural Elimination Chamber<\/a> match was perfectly executed. It had tension and great spots, and the redemption of Shawn Michaels besting his former friend for the World Heavyweight Championship.<\/p>\n

Royal Rumble (2008)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Six years after WWE blew the roof off Madison Square Garden, they returned to make sure that the roof stayed off. The roster of talent had changed since 2002, but that didn\u2019t stand in the way of WWE putting on yet another classic night for the MSG audience.<\/p>\n

From top to bottom, the Survivor Series card produced memorable matches. The continuation of Ric Flair’s career was a fun match that had the crowd buzzing. The two World Championship matches, one featuring Jeff Hardy against Randy Orton, and the other seeing Edge defend against Rey Mysterio, were fantastic sprints. The World Championship scene was phenomenal, and these four men showed why.<\/p>\n

Not to be outdone by the undercard, the Royal Rumble match was amazing, putting itself on the short list of best Rumble matches in WWE history. HBK and The Undertaker opening the Royal Rumble<\/a> gave it an adrenaline shot from the outset, and the action didn\u2019t let up. It was an all-time match that had perhaps the greatest shock return in Royal Rumble history when John Cena showed up as the 30th<\/sup> entrant.<\/p>\n

Survivor Series (1996) <\/strong><\/h2>\n

1996 was an up-and-down year for WWE. They were still finding their voice in the new age of professional wrestling, and many point to the Survivor Series as the moment when WWE figured things out. It was a card that contained the perfect hybrid of traditional Survivor Series matches and incredible singles matches that previewed an Attitude Era style of working.<\/p>\n

The three Survivor Series matches had a great mix of young and veteran talent, and each match was different from the others, giving the audience something to sink their teeth into. It\u2019s also notable that one of these matches included the debut of Rocky Maivia<\/a>, a man who would become one of the biggest stars in WWE history.<\/p>\n

Wedged in between the Survivor Series matches were three matches that set the tone for everything WWE did going forward. Mankind versus the Undertaker and Bret Hart versus Steve Austin were different matches, but still contained the same physicality that would set the blueprint for the Attitude Era.<\/p>\n

Then there was the WWE Championship match where the MSG crowd turned on Shawn Michaels, setting up a heel run that would see the creation of WWE\u2019s iconic stable.
