The eras that came before it were subject to less rigid content restrictions. In a bow to advertisers’ demands, WWE moved towards a PG rating. That limited what they could do with violence, forcing them to get more creative in how they presented their product to the wrestling world.

Some things worked very well, while others didn’t exactly light the world on fire. It was an era of big stars and missed opportunities, but as with every other era, there were iconic talents who made their names winning WWE gold.

The champions of the PG Era spanned the spectrum from long-time greats to young, hungry talent ready to take their place at the top of the company. The PG Era saw wrestlers cement their legacy by capturing World Championships and becoming a part of WWE history. They are the cornerstones of the PG Era, and they are listed below.

Top WWE PG Era Champions

Triple H

Triple H has been an overwhelming success in any era that he has been a part of. The Game dominated the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression Eras, but by the start of the PG Era, his career was in decline. That didn’t stop him from amassing 5 WWE Championship victories in the span of two years. It was a great testament to how valued he was by both the audience and the office.

His World Title programs against John Cena, Randy Orton, Edge, and Jeff Hardy were the highlights. Triple H’s babyface persona connected with the fans, and he had great matches with all of the men mentioned above. The PG Era was the last era in which Triple H acted as a full-time talent, and he went out on the highest of notes.

Randy Orton

Randy Orton became a household name during the Ruthless Aggression Era, but it was during the PG Era that he cemented his legacy, pun intended. The Viper’s success rate during the PG Era was ridiculous, as he captured 9 World Championships. The main event scene couldn’t have progressed were it not for the incredible work that Orton put in. As both a babyface and a heel, he was the perfect champion.

A photo of WWE legend Randy Orton. Every top star of the era dropped a title to the third-generation wrestler, making a string of success that rivals any era. Randy Orton became a mainstay of the main event scene with championship success during the PG Era.

John Cena

The Leader of Cenation went on an unprecedented streak of belt collecting during the PG Era. John Cena coined the term Ruthless Aggression, but it was between 2008 and 2014 that he became a legend. John Cena either went into or competed for a World Championship at 5 WrestleManias during this era, a feat only a handful of wrestlers can boast.

Outside of his World Championship reigns, John Cena also won multiple tag team championships, each with a different partner. David Otunga, Batista, and The Miz were rivals, but beneficiaries of Cena’s success during his reign of belt collecting.

CM Punk

CM Punk was getting his feet wet when the PG Era began, but by its end, he became one of the most recognizable champions in the company. His first World Championship was his breakthrough moment, which the crowd lapped up. That was followed by a second World Championship, where we saw CM Punk turn heel and thus propel himself to the top of the card.

Both were great, but paled in comparison to his record-setting 434-day reign. CM Punk put together three very impressive runs with the top prize in WWE, establishing himself as a top star.

Edge

The Ruthless Aggression Era saw Edge break free from being a tag team specialist. Then the PG Era saw the Ultimate Opportunist become a WWE legend. Edge’s career was cut short during this era, but that didn’t stop him from capturing 5 World Championships in 3 years. During that time, Edge won victories over Triple H, John Cena, Dolph Ziggler, and Jeff Hardy, a literal who’s who of WWE stars.

Edge’s versatility as World Champion during the PG Era cannot be understated. He was able to easily slip between heel and babyface and be a believable champion in both areas. Which is even more incredible when it’s considered that Edge was only part of the era for 3 years. In that time, Edge did more for the World Championships than most wrestlers do in their careers.

Sheamus

The Celtic Warrior burst onto the scene during the PG Era. His look set him apart from other talents on the roster, and it wasn’t long before he started putting championships in the trophy case. Within his first year in WWE, he upset John Cena to capture the WWE Championship. A rookie winning the strap over the company’s biggest name was a huge story, and it had Sheamus being considered a top guy within a year.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBIdHsyxai" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5150px; aspect-ratio: 5150/3433;" ></smartframe-embed>

Sheamus didn’t rest on one iconic championship win, as he strung together two more World Title victories during the PG Era. On top of that, he captured the United States Championship and enjoyed multiple tag team title reigns. Sheamus’s PG Era started with a shocking championship victory, but as the years moved on, his acumen became commonplace in WWE.

Kofi Kingston

The mid-card scene was rife with talent during the PG Era. A ton of new stars made their way to WWE, but only a handful were able to achieve a massive amount of success. The cream of that crop, nod to Macho Man, was a man who theoretically came from the island of Jamaica. Kofi Kingston was an instant fan favorite, and it didn’t take him long to capture WWE gold.

He was a fixture on the mid-card scene, winning the Intercontinental Championship 3 times and the United States Championship twice. His matches were always heavily promoted, showing the front office’s faith in him.

Kingston was not one to win gold by himself, creating fantastic tag teams with the likes of Evan Bourne, R-Truth, and CM Punk. These teams were thrown-together tandems, but their chemistry couldn’t be denied. When Kofi Kingston set his mind to winning a championship, he captured it. His string of success in the mid-card ranks can be compared to no one.

The WWE PG Era has remained one of the most divisive eras in history.
