WWE Night of Champions 2011

Night of Champions was the follow-up to two big PPV events that summer, Money in the Bank and SummerSlam, both of which featured the memorable and well-received CM Punk vs. John Cena feud.

Things were on fire at this point as CM Punk was becoming the character that we know and love, Kevin Nash returned, WWE was pushing new talent, and SmackDown was having a great year.

The big story of the show was the feud between CM Punk and Triple H. Kevin Nash had recently returned at SummerSlam and would attack Punk, which caused Alberto Del Rio to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase and beat Punk to win the WWE Championship.

Punk would call out Nash for his attack and would also go after Triple H, as he believed that he was the reason for the attack. What started as a scheduled match between CM Punk and Kevin Nash would be changed to CM Punk now facing Triple H in a No Disqualification match, which HHH would win.

This show was also known for Mark Henry finally winning the World Heavyweight Championship against Randy Orton. Henry was on a highly praised run with a new “Hall of Pain” gimmick and cut a memorable promo about how he worked very hard for 15 years to get to that moment.

Other matches on the show included John Cena defeating Alberto Del Rio to win the WWE Championship, Dolph Ziggler retaining his United States Championship in a Fatal 4-Way match, and Cody Rhodes retaining his Intercontinental Championship against Ted DiBiase.

4. WWE Night of Champions 2014

Coming off SummerSlam, Night of Champions 2014 was a bigger show than usual, especially for a B PPV.

The event would feature Brock Lesnar’s first WWE World Heavyweight Title defense against John Cena, who Brock had beaten for the title in a memorable 16-minute squash match at SummerSlam in the month prior.

In the main event, Brock would end up retaining the title after Seth Rollins attacked Cena, causing Brock to get disqualified. Rollins would also attempt to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase, but failed after Cena had stopped the attempt.

The show was also supposed to feature a big match between Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. However, Roman was rushed to the hospital for a hernia and was not able to compete. Rollins would officially win the bout via forfeit. This then led to the return of Dean Ambrose, who was looking to get revenge on Seth Rollins for his betrayal of The Shield.

The rest of the event included a great United States Title defense from Sheamus against Cesaro, Goldust and Stardust defeating The Usos to win the WWE Tag Titles, The Miz winning the Intercontinental Title against Dolph Ziggler, and AJ Lee becoming a three-time WWE Divas Champion in a triple threat match against Paige and Nikki Bella.

3. WWE Night of Champions 2009

This edition of Night of Champions was highly anticipated because of the main event with CM Punk defending his World Heavyweight Championship against Jeff Hardy.

2009 was a big year for Hardy, as the crowd had connected to him heavily, and he was also coming off a WWE Title reign and had just won the World Heavyweight Title against Edge in a Ladder match at Extreme Rules to end their feud. This would be ruined when Punk would cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase and defeat Jeff Hardy to win the title.

The two would have a rematch at The Bash, in which Punk retained after disqualifying himself in the bout. Punk would become a full-on heel, and many were ready for Hardy to get revenge and regain his title, which Hardy would end up doing.

Randy Orton would also retain his WWE Title against John Cena and Triple H in a WrestleMania 24 rematch. This was a hot period for Randy Orton, as he had begun The Legacy stable and was unstable, which caused him to injure and attack the McMahons, Triple H, and Batista.

Also on the show was Rey Mysterio retaining his Intercontinental Championship against Dolph Ziggler, Michelle McCool retaining her WWE Women’s Title against Melina, and Christian defeating Tommy Dreamer to become a two-time ECW Champion.

2. WWE Night of Champions 2025

Last year’s Night of Champions was also one of the most anticipated events in 2025.

The event featured a main event that fans had wanted to see, which was John Cena facing off against CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship.

The match was huge, especially as it was the last time that we would see these two men wrestle, as Cena would be retiring at the end of the year. Cena would take advantage of this and retain his WWE Title.

The event also featured a big King of the Ring final match between Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes.
