This was not at all pretty, as both competitors rained down on each other as soon as the bell sounded. For the most part, Sami Zayn remained impartial throughout the match.

Cody Rhodes, after a devastating move, would pin Gunther in the same spot where the controversial finish to Clash in Italy happened, and Zayn broke up the pin, seeing Gunther’s leg under the ropes. He would get heat from Rhodes, but still, Zayn was calling it down the middle. Through all this, Gunther would capitalize on getting Rhodes in the Sleeper, and Rhodes almost faded until he got to the ropes. Zayn would break up the hold, but Gunther refused, leading to a confrontation between the two.

Gunther would push Zayn around, and Sami took exception to this, slapping Gunther in the face. The Ring General did not take that lightly, delivering a Powerbomb to the special guest referee. This left Rhodes with an opening, hitting a Super Cody Cutter, followed by a Cross Rhodes. A second ref would slide in and count the pin, but Gunther would kick out. Gunther mounted a comeback, eventually resulting in a Powerbomb to Rhodes.

Gunther was three seconds away from winning, until Zayn pulled the referee out. During this heated verbal exchange, Cody Rhodes would hit a Shoulder Block on the Apron and execute a Sunset Flip. Gunther would hold onto the ropes, but Zayn slid in, kicked his hands to loosen his grip, then proceeded to make a fast count, allowing Cody to retain the Undisputed WWE Title in another controversial finish.

Backstage, Rhodes and Gunther would argue, only for Gunther to demolish Zayn. In a wild turn of events, Cody demanded to restart the match to do this right, and Nick Aldis agreed. Both men exchanged Sleeper Holds to begin the reboot. This continued for a bit, but Zayn couldn’t help himself, hitting Gunther with a Helluva Kick to cause a disqualification.

Zayn would go insane, hitting the referee and even blasting Cody with the title belt. Sami Zayn has absolutely gone insane on this week’s WWE SmackDown.

Backstage:

Jade Cargill called out Tiffany Stratton, urging her to put the Women’s U.S. Title on the line at Night of Champions

Gunther demanded a rematch for the Undisputed WWE Title at Night of Champions.

Jacob Fatu and Solo Sikoa spoke backstage, with the former saying he’ll be here to ensure Jey Uso’s win. Sikoa would encourage Tama and Talla Tonga for their title match tonight. Unfortunately, both men said Solo should remain in the back until he gets his affairs in order with The Bloodline, saying it’s “not their problem.”

WWE Tag Team Championship Match

Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga are locked in tonight, as evidenced by their interaction with their MFT leader, as they challenge for the WWE Tag Team Championship, held by Damian Priest and R-Truth next. It was a pretty even match throughout. But when MFT wrestled control from the champions, that’s when it started falling apart.

Solo Sikoa was asked to stay back, but he didn’t abide. While he did save Talla from a Damian Priest attack, he also distracted Tama. Priest would drive Talla into the steel post. Tama was none the wiser that Priest made the tag to R-Truth, making him the legal man. A distracted Tama Tonga would get caught up in a School Boy pin attempt, as R-Truth nailed the pin to retain the WWE Tag Team Championships.

After the match, a livid Tama and Talla would walk away from Sikoa.

Backstage:

Sami Zayn is still venting about being the “Last Good Guy” to a lifeless Johnny Gargano. Nick Aldis would enter the scene, seething due to Sami’s actions earlier in the night. Zayn said Rhodes should be thanking him, and he didn’t want to be involved, but he is, and he’s not going away.

Ricky Saints vs. Carmelo Hayes

A WWE SmackDown graphic featuring Ricky Saints and Carmelo Hayes.
