It was a lifestyle shift by WWE that defined an era. It was a time for the younger stars to take their place in the upper echelon of WWE by any means necessary. The WWE Ruthless Aggression saw young lions like John Cena, Edge, and Randy Orton push their way to the top of the company, taking no prisoners along the way.

Some veterans remained to defend their spot, but Ruthless Aggression was the era of the young stars.

What drove every competitor during Ruthless Aggression was the desire to build their trophy case. Anyone can have an impact, but it was those men and women who carried championships that became legends. They were the faces of the era and included a crop of new stars, as well as some veterans who refused to let go of their legacy. These were the champions that helped the Ruthless Aggression Era become a legendary part of WWE’s history.

John Cena

John Cena was the poster child of the Ruthless Aggression Era. It was his rising star that put the company on its feet and captured a ridiculous number of championships. It started with three United States Championships while he maintained a tight grip on WWE’s mid-card scene—a run where we saw Cena engaged in memorable programs against Carlito and The Big Show.

After Cena conquered the mid-card, he moved on to bigger things, winning the WWE Championship three times, holding it for over 600 days in total. His third reign was a major highlight with John Cena holding the WWE Championship for 380 days. The longest reign WWE had seen in over 19 years. John Cena was the champion of the Ruthless Aggression Era.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB9mYVtNgp" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2006px; aspect-ratio: 2006/3000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Randy Orton

Seeing the evolution of Randy Orton, pun intended, during Ruthless Aggression was a thing of beauty. He was still wet behind the ears when he debuted, but it didn’t take long for him to start putting trophies in his collection.

It started with an iconic 210-day reign with the Intercontinental Championship, where he defended against legends like Mick Foley, Rob Van Dam, and Edge. It was incredible what he did with the secondary strap, bringing prestige back to the championship that had been lost.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBXVPcP8jq" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2700px; aspect-ratio: 2700/1800;" ></smartframe-embed>

Randy Orton then moved on to the main event, winning the World Heavyweight Championship, becoming the youngest wrestler in the company to do so. He continued his path to the top, winning the WWE Championship twice during the Ruthless Aggression Era. Randy Orton had memorable feuds against Triple H, John Cena, Shawn Michaels, and pretty much every legend of the Ruthless Aggression Era.

The Undertaker

The Undertaker was one of the few stars that remained from the Attitude Era. He had maintained a stranglehold on the main event scene and was the measuring stick for all other talent. The Undertaker was still a huge attraction and was treated as such by winning the Undisputed Championship as the Ruthless Aggression Era began.

His first title reign of the era didn’t last long, but luckily, he had more successful runs with the World Heavyweight Championships. In all, he captured the big gold belt three times, battling it out in iconic programs opposite Batista and Edge. The Undertaker’s run with the World Championship was the highlight of SmackDown for years. He took the brand under his wing and made that title mean something.

Batista

The Evolution tree did wonders for whoever stepped under it. Randy Orton was the first to break out, but the story of Batista’s rise to the World Championship was perfect booking. When he moved out from under the shadow of Triple H, he started on a path to become one of the most important champions of the Ruthless Aggression Era. He dominated the main event scene, capturing 4 World Championships and becoming the face of SmackDown. There, he had memorable world title feuds against The Undertaker, Edge, JBL, and Booker T.

The Animal wasn’t a lone wolf during the Ruthless Aggression Era. He teamed with Ric Flair, Rey Mysterio, and John Cena to win tag team gold. Batista’s talent for accumulating championships made him a star of the Ruthless Aggression.

Trish Stratus

Trish Stratus’s impact on the Ruthless Aggression cannot be understated. In a time when the women’s division wasn’t taken seriously, she worked her butt off to bring more eyes to the product. Trish Stratus made women’s wrestling popular, and she was rewarded with an iconic run of championships.

Stratus had seven reigns with the WWE Women’s Championship and was at the forefront of that title’s resurgence. One of her reigns totaled 448 days, setting a record that stands to this day. If there was an important Women’s Championship match during the Ruthless Aggression Era, you can rest assured that Trish Stratus was a part of it.

Triple H

Triple H was one of the few Attitude Era stalwarts who remained during the Ruthless Aggression Era. His only goal was to maintain a stranglehold over the World Heavyweight Championship, and he would stop at nothing to achieve that.

His first reign with the World Championship was the beginning of his “Reign of Terror,” where he would consistently push himself into the main event scene. Even when he lost the World Championship, we could be sure that he would win it back. From 2002 to 2005, he held the big gold belt five times.

When he wasn’t deep into his heel run, he was winning World Championships as a babyface. A further two reigns were accumulated by Triple H during the Ruthless Aggression Era. His championship runs were a huge part of the era and included major feuds against the likes of Batista, Randy Orton and Shawn Michaels. Triple H’s work with those world championships helped to establish a slew of new main event stars.

Edge

No one changed the course of their career during Ruthless Aggression better than the Rated-R Superstar. He had been fantastic as a tag team specialist but dreamed of bigger things. Edge moved into the singles arena and began his journey to collect as many championships as possible. Amassing eleven championships during the Ruthless Aggression Era, he set himself apart from all wrestlers. No one could match the success he achieved during this time.

A photo of WWE Ruthless Aggression era legend Edge.
