Historically, it is rare for the company to elevate a performer who truly masters all three qualities. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, looking at the current landscape, the company already has a performer who checks every one of those boxes, yet refuses to push him as &#8220;the guy.&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2025\/12\/24\/la-knight-continues-to-earn\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That wrestler is LA Knight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but before discussing \u201cThe Megastar\u2019s\u201d current standing, we must first dive into the long journey he took to reach WWE finally.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Biography<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaun Edward Ricker was born on November 1, 1982, in Hagerstown, Maryland. He had been a fan of professional wrestling for virtually his entire life, having started watching at just three years old. His early inspirations were a who\u2019s who of greats, including Hulk Hogan, Jake \u201cThe Snake\u201d Roberts, and Ric Flair, as well as the two men he is most often compared to: \u201cStone Cold\u201d Steve Austin and The Rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being involved in track and field and playing in his high school band, his primary focus was always on becoming a professional wrestler. After graduating from North Hagerstown High School in 2000, 18-year-old Ricker took a gutsy risk, moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, to officially begin his training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make ends meet, Ricker worked at a lumber mill until he finally debuted for the Heartland Wrestling Association (HWA) after three years of training, using the ring name Deuce. He began to find his footing in NWA Championship Wrestling, notably teaming with Brian Cage as part of \u201cNatural Selection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pair held the NWA Heritage Tag Team Championship for more than 200 days before their eventual split. Ricker\u2019s singles stock continued to rise in 2012 when he challenged for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship, falling just short against the current Raw General Manager, Adam Pearce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2013, he secured a dream opportunity when he signed a developmental deal with WWE as Slate Randall. Following a stint as an enhancement talent, where the early seeds of his iconic \u201cYeah!\u201d catchphrase were first planted, he was released in 2014. It was the kind of blow that would have finished most careers. But for him, it only served to fuel the journey ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After his WWE departure, he transitioned to TNA\/Impact Wrestling as Eli Drake, gaining widespread recognition for his natural charisma. It was during this period that he achieved significant success, racking up a substantial collection of championships and high-profile wins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is a former Impact World Champion, and TNA King of the Mountain Champion, and he also captured the Impact World Tag Team Championship alongside Scott Steiner, the uncle of Bron Breakker. Additionally, he had a successful stint in the NWA reboot, winning the World Tag Team Championship with James Storm and crossing paths with current SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, he made his return to WWE at NXT Takeover: Vengeance Day, debuting under the name LA Knight. He quickly became a standout on the brand, notably winning the Million Dollar Championship from Cameron Grimes. However, upon his 2022 call-up to SmackDown, he was initially rebranded as Max Dupri, a male modeling agent for the &#8220;Maximum Male Models.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fans immediately rejected the change, calling for the return of the LA Knight they had embraced in NXT. Following Triple H\u2019s takeover of WWE creative in late 2022, the Dupri character was quickly abandoned, allowing Knight to return to his &#8220;Megastar&#8221; roots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout 2023 and 2024, he consistently received the loudest reactions on any given show. During this period, LA Knight was also granted the opportunity to share the ring with legends like John Cena and Roman Reigns, further establishing his status as a legitimate force in the main event scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite not yet capturing a World Title, he became a two-time United States Champion, first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/08\/03\/andnew-wwe-summerslam-2024-crowns-three-new-champions\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defeating Logan Paul at SummerSlam 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and later overcoming Shinsuke Nakamura during a March 2025 episode of SmackDown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LA Knight\u2019s road to the main roster was a 22-year climb, but despite his clear ability and organic connection with the crowd, the elusive top-tier push has yet to arrive. At 43 years old, he remains the &#8220;total package,&#8221; but the clock is ticking; if WWE is ever going to go all-in on LA Knight, it must do it now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Now?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality is that it has become a matter of &#8220;now or never&#8221; for LA Knight. Given that he is 43, the physical toll of the business is a legitimate factor. Unlike stars like Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton, who had over a decade to build their legacies on the main roster, Knight\u2019s late-career arrival means he must hit those major milestones now before his window closes for good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2026\/05\/01\/quality-over-quantity-are-the-wwe-new-additions-too-much-too-soon\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influx of new talent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to both SmackDown and Raw has left some questioning if there is still room for Knight in the title picture, especially as the roster trends toward a younger direction and in elevating the newcomers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WWE reportedly scrapped a teased storyline between LA Knight and Gunther to move <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2026\/05\/08\/gunther-officially-signed-to-wwe-smackdown-on-5-8-episode\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunther to SmackDown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a Cody Rhodes feud; fast forward to today, and it appears WWE has no substantial plans for one of their most popular stars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His two most significant storylines to date include his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2025\/04\/19\/wwe-wrestlemania-41-fatu-crushes-knight-claims-title\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WrestleMania 41 loss to Jacob Fatu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which ended his United States Championship reign, and a months-long program with The Vision. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That rivalry finally culminated at WrestleMania 42 in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2026\/04\/19\/4-things-wwe-got-right-at-wrestlemania-42-saturday\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-profile tag match<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> featuring LA Knight and The Usos against the team of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwe.com\/shows\/wrestlemania\/saturday-2026\/vision-speed-usos-knight\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> iShowSpeed<\/a> and The Vision members, Logan Paul and Austin Theory. Since dropping the US Title, Knight has largely occupied a supporting role, even as &#8220;Father Time&#8221; begins to knock at his door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To resolve the uncertainty surrounding Knight\u2019s future, WWE has a few intriguing directions it could take. They could keep him on Raw to join the already stacked field, positioning themselves for the Intercontinental Championship, or they could transition him back to SmackDown. If he doesn&#8217;t secure a world title, or at least the prized briefcase, by the end of 2026, he risks becoming one of wrestling&#8217;s great &#8220;what if&#8221; stories: a brilliant performer who was the right star at the wrong time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, there is no denying the electricity LA Knight brings to an arena every single week.\u00a0 But as the landscape shifts toward a new era of younger stars, the window for a sustained main-roster push is closing fast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the company doesn\u2019t move quickly, Knight\u2019s legacy won&#8217;t be defined by the titles he won, but by the fact that both he and the WWE made us believe he should have.
