As a nation rebuilding following World War II, fending off foreign threats was always a big draw to reclaim Japanese national pride. From <strong>Rikidozan<\/strong>&#8216;s early battles against <strong>Lou Thesz<\/strong>, <strong>Antonio Inoki<\/strong> vs <strong>Frank Gotch<\/strong> in NJPW&#8217;s infancy, and <strong>Giant Baba<\/strong> vs. <strong>Bruno Sammartino<\/strong> in All Japan&#8217;s early days,\u00a0<em>gaijin\u00a0<\/em>have always had a place in Japanese storytelling when it comes to pro wrestling. Since the inception of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in 1987 (after having been a tournament years previous), the main title holders of NJPW&#8217;s top title have continuously fought back challenges from\u00a0<em>gaijin<\/em> to keep the title around the waist of a Japanese wrestler. Of the 27 men to hold the IWGP Heavyweight Championship since 1987, only six have not been Japanese wrestlers: Americans <strong>Vader, Scott Norton, Bob Sapp, Brock Lesnar<\/strong>, and <strong>AJ Styles<\/strong>, and Kazakhstan (formerly Russia)&#8217;s <strong>Salman Hashimikov<\/strong>. But not for lack of trying. Should he retain, he will take sole position of the most title defences against a\u00a0<em>gaijin<\/em>, breaking the two way tie with six with WWE Hall of Famer and 6x IWGP Heavyweight Champion <strong>Tatsumi Fujinami<\/strong>. Here&#8217;s a look at the top\u00a0<em>Gaijin<\/em> Killers in NJPW history who defended or won the IWGP Heavyweight title against outside wrestlers.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6 &#8211; KAZUCHIKA OKADA, TATSUMI FUJINAMI<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16101\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16101\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16101 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/03\/JAPAN1-e1522078943275.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16101\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photos: Fujinami (PWI); Okada (NJPW)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>WWE Hall of Famer and NJPW legend Tatsumi Fujinami is a 6x IWGP Heavyweight Champion in a New Japan career that lasted from its inception in 1972 through 2006 (after being ousted as NJPW President). He fended off many challengers for the IWGP title in his reigns, including six\u00a0<em>gaijin<\/em> &#8211; Fujinami fought back such legends as <strong>Ric Flair, Kerry Von Erich, Vader, Jerry &#8220;The King&#8221; Lawler, Sid Vicious<\/strong> and <strong>Tommy Lane<\/strong> (formerly of the <strong>Rock N&#8217; Roll RPMs<\/strong>\u00a0tag team in Memphis). But when Okada faced &#8220;The American Nightmare&#8221; <strong>Cody Rhodes<\/strong> at the <em><strong>NJPW G1 Special<\/strong><\/em> in the US last summer, he tied his outside challengers at six, having previously fended off <strong>Kenny Omega<\/strong> (multiple times), <strong>Bad Luck Fale, AJ Styles, Karl Anderson<\/strong> and <strong>Prince Devitt\u00a0<\/strong>(now\u00a0<strong>Finn Balor<\/strong>). Oddly enough, the only\u00a0<em>gaijin<\/em> Okada has faced for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship have been members of <strong>Bullet Club<\/strong>. Although he&#8217;s returned multiple times since, it&#8217;s usually in more exhibition style matches. But the 4x IWGP Heavyweight Champion fought of several\u00a0<em>gaijin<\/em> in his reigns, including <strong>Sting, Scott Norton, Road Warrior Hawk<\/strong> and UFC Hall of Famer <strong>Don Frye<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3 &#8211; ANTONIO INOKI, RIKI CHOSHU, SHINYA HASHIMOTO<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16104\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16104\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16104 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/lwosonprowrestling.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2018\/03\/JAPAN4-1-e1522079064764.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16104\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photos: PWI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Antonio Inoki faced many foreign wrestlers throughout New Japan&#8217;s first decade, but once he got the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, he fought back challenges from <strong>&#8220;Dr. Death&#8221; Steve Williams, Dick Murdoch<\/strong> and <strong>Bam Bam Bigelow<\/strong> in his only reign. In fact, of his four title defences, three were against\u00a0<em>gaijin<\/em>.
