Since the beginning, the men have been the ones whose craft has been taken seriously by both the audience and the office. It was just the way the world worked for years, and thankfully, it’s a trend that started to change in the early 2000’s.

Since that time, the women of World Wrestling Entertainment have been putting on amazing matches that have shown the world the viability of women’s wrestling.

Now that we have entered Women’s History Month, it seems fitting to look back at the women’s matches that have had the most impact in WWE. The matches have shown that the women are just as talented as the men and have created a revolution in Women’s Wrestling.

Alundra Blayze vs Bull Nakano (Women’s Championship Match; SummerSlam 1994)

WWE’s Golden and New Generation Era were not rife with women’s matches. The females were more of an afterthought when it came to booking, but a match snuck through and showed what two great athletes can create when given the opportunity. It was at SummerSlam 1994 when Alundra Blayze defended her Women’s Championship against Bull Nakano.

This was a match that had none of the fluff that some would expect from a women’s match. It was a fantastic wrestling match where Nakano played her monster heel role to perfection, and Blayze was the plucky underdog. There was a stiffness to everything they did, and the crowd slowly got into the match.

This was not the type of wrestling that anyone had seen from WWE’s female contingent. What we saw that night was what the female wrestlers can bring to the table when given the chance.

Trish Stratus vs Lita (Women’s Championship Match; Monday Night Raw, December 6th, 2004)

While not technically the first time that women main-evented Raw, this was the first time that no male wrestlers were used in the match. Lita and Trish going to battle for the WWE Women’s Championship was an all-female affair. A historic event in which the women’s championship closed Monday Night Raw and featured two of the best female wrestlers in WWE history.

Trish Stratus and Lita have been joined at the hip throughout their WWE careers. They were at the forefront of Women’s wrestling when it started to gain traction, and this main event was a direct result of that. Their rivalry was fantastic, and this match highlighted everything great about their issues.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBRFA4o6BQ" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2770px; aspect-ratio: 2770/2210;" ></smartframe-embed>

This main event carried the importance a main event needs. The world bought into what these women were selling, and WWE showed that the tide was turning and that female wrestlers were viable main event talents.

Charlotte Flair vs Becky Lynch vs Sasha Banks (Women’s Championship Match; WrestleMania 32)

After the WWE Women’s Championship was abolished, we were presented with the Divas Championship. A championship for the female talent, yes, but one that highlighted how the office felt about the presentation of women in WWE.

They were eye candy that stepped between the ropes, and they weren’t given much of a program to work with. That is, until WWE finally changed its tune and brought back the WWE Women’s Championship.

The triple threat between Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Sasha Banks at WrestleMania 32 was a great match. There shouldn’t be much doubt that these three women would be able to put together a compelling match. All three are world-class athletes and rarely put on a bad contest.

What was more important was that this was contested for the WWE Women’s Championship. No longer would the female talent be viewed as Divas. WWE had evolved to an entity that took women’s wrestling seriously, and this match was the finish line.

Becky Lynch vs Charlotte Flair vs Ronda Rousey (Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championship Match; WrestleMania 35)

Being involved in the main event of WrestleMania is the dream of every wrestler who has set foot into World Wrestling Entertainment. It signifies the office’s faith, and it is the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice. It’s an honour that was reserved solely for the men’s court for years, but that changed when Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, and Ronda Rousey were given the main event at WrestleMania 35.

The bright lights of MetLife Stadium shone down on these three women as they went to battle in a winner-take-all match for both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships. It was a fantastic back-and-forth battle that could have seen any of the women walking out of New Jersey with the World Championships.

After a gruelling battle, Becky Lynch emerged victorious to a tremendous ovation from the 68,000 in attendance. It was a finish everyone was elated about, but it was not as important as the match itself.

This was the first time that any woman had been a participant in the main event of WWE’s biggest show. What had seemed unthinkable only a few years before had become a reality. On that night, the women of WWE proved they could draw a big crowd and were on the same level as any men who came before them.

Women’s Royal Rumble Match (Royal Rumble 2018)

There are many gimmick matches that WWE employs, but none are more important than the Royal Rumble. It is the brainchild of WWE and has become the beacon gimmick match as important as any event WWE has to offer. For years, it was a property of the men of WWE, but that all changed in 2018 when WWE held the first Women’s Royal Rumble match.

This Royal Rumble match meant so much to the WWE machine. It signified that the men no longer had a monopoly over the big-time gimmick matches. The women’s division had become deep enough for the company to run a match of this magnitude.

That type of depth was unthinkable a few years before, and each woman put on an incredible performance. We also got some fantastic surprises with Trish Stratus, Lita, Molly Holly, and Vickie Guerrero. It was a celebration of WWE’s past, present, and future, and there is no way that it could have gone better for the women of WWE.

There was also the cherry on top of Asuka winning the Royal Rumble. It was the right call to push the megastar to the moon. She was the best wrestler in the match and the one who gained the most from winning.

WWE Evolution 2018

This is a bit of a cop out, as we are talking about an entire PLE as opposed to a particular match, but when it’s something as historic as this PLE was, it must be mentioned.

For years, women were lucky to get one match on a card, let alone a match that was taken seriously. The women’s matches were commonly referred to as the bathroom break matches. Taking place before the main event, the crowd was usually dead for these matches, and WWE didn’t book them very well.

When this all-women’s event was booked, it included some incredible matches that kept fans stuck to their seats, as opposed to running for the bathroom. On that night, we witnessed Hall of Famers and current stars go to battle in some of the best matches of 2018.

Highlights included Becky Lynch taking on Charlotte Flair in an incredible Last Woman Standing match, and a must-see match for the NXT Women’s Championship between Shayna Baszler and Kairi Sane. Everything about Evolution showed how much WWE had progressed as a company. The Women of World Wrestling Entertainment had achieved the ultimate success, and there wasn’t a man in sight to take their thunder.

The world of professional wrestling is a male-dominated sport.
