That is the trajectory of Sami Zayn\u2019s character, and whether the time has finally come for him to snap and embrace his dark side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

WWE fans live for a heroic babyface they can rally behind, but there is an undeniable electricity that comes when a beloved figure finally breaks. A properly executed heel turn can be just as exciting, revitalizing a superstar’s career by swapping out cheers for the kind of intense heat that only a fallen idol can generate.<\/span><\/p>\n

While many fans online have grown tired of Zayn\u2019s \u201cunderdog character,\u201d it appears that same dissatisfaction is now starting to hit WWE arenas. One person who seems to have tapped into the fans’ frustration with the stale character is none other than WWE\u2019s fastest-rising star, Trick Williams.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the <\/span>January 2, 2026, episode of SmackDown<\/span><\/a>, Williams cut a promo calling out Zayn for being a \u201cmoper.\u201d He labeled him \u201cMr. Can\u2019t Get The Job Done,\u201d a jab at Zayn\u2019s recent string of losses. Rather than defending Sami, the fans instead cheered in agreement with Trick\u2019s assessment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another sign that fans are growing tired of Zayn\u2019s \u201cNice Guy\u201d persona came during a backstage segment during last Friday\u2019s SmackDown with Cody Rhodes. After Rhodes pinned Zayn in their <\/span>Elimination Chamber qualifier match<\/span><\/a>, despite Drew McIntyre attempting to aid Zayn, Sami confronted Cody, telling him he should be ashamed of himself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Just as fans thought they were seeing a new edge to Sami\u2019s character, he immediately chased down Rhodes to apologize. This left online fans calling the segment \u201cawkward,\u201d while the live crowd in the arena voiced their frustration by booing Zayn once again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many fans felt the move was desperate; it seemed Zayn wanted to remain in the \u201cGolden Boy\u2019s\u201d shadow rather than risk being left outside of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

With online discourse growing and arena crowds clearly growing tired of this \u201clame duck act,\u201d it\u2019s time to examine what is driving this backlash and why it\u2019s officially time for Zayn to hang up the superhero costume and finally embrace the villain role.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Underdog Character is Getting Stale<\/b><\/h2>\n

The biggest complaint among many fans regarding Zayn\u2019s current WWE run centers on his persistent \u201cunderdog\u201d gimmick. While fans have supported this character for years, his recent loss to Drew McIntyre at the <\/span>Royal Rumble<\/span><\/a> for the Undisputed WWE Championship has caused that support to wear thin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Zayn\u2019s latest loss to McIntyre dropped his all-time singles record against him to a staggering 0-12. When a babyface constantly loses the big matches, the audience stops viewing them with sympathy and starts seeing the character as simply ineffective.<\/span><\/p>\n

Adding a new element to Zayn\u2019s character would be a breath of fresh air for fans who have grown tired of his current \u201cnice guy\u201d persona. A heel turn for Sami could offer a compelling mix of what we saw with CM Punk in 2011 and the <\/span>transformation John Cena<\/span><\/a> underwent last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sami could lash out at the fans for their lack of appreciation over his 11 years on the main roster, much like Cena did in his now-iconic Brussels promo. At the same time, he could target the company for never truly believing in him and for lying about the rewards of hard work bringing success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Being a Heel Once Again, But a Different Kind\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

Many forget that if WWE were to pull the trigger on a Zayn heel turn, they would technically be repeating history. His initial turn took place at Hell in a Cell on October 8, 2017, when he aligned with Kevin Owens and cost Shane McMahon the match.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He also explored other heel personas, such as \u201cThe Great Liberator\u201d from 2019 to 2020, where he managed Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro after returning from injury. One of his more intriguing heel characters was \u201cThe Conspiracy Theorist,\u201d run from 2020 to 2022, where he claimed WWE management was actively conspiring against him, bearing a striking resemblance to the current attitude of the man he holds a 0-12 record against.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His most iconic heel persona, however, came when he joined \u201cThe Bloodline\u201d as the \u201cHonorary Uce\u201d. While aligned with WWE\u2019s biggest draw, Roman Reigns, the Usos, and the legendary Paul Heyman, he managed to become a massive fan favorite despite operating as a heel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Zayn\u2019s \u201cnice guy\u201d persona has run its course, leaving his character feeling stale. Shaking things up now might be the only way to give him the edge he needs for that elusive, serious World Title run he\u2019s been chasing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Creating New Matchups\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

While fans have grown tired of his long-standing \u201cunderdog\u201d persona, they have also grown fatigued with another issue: the constant repetition of the same matchups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many fans feel Zayn has been trapped in a loop against a repetitive rotation of rivals, ranging from Gunther and Drew McIntyre to his former allies from \u201cThe Bloodline,\u201d <\/span>Roman Reigns<\/span><\/a> and Jey Uso.<\/span><\/p>\n

While a matchup between Zayn and Trick Williams is intriguing, many believe the dynamic is off. Williams carries a heel edge that fans love, while Zayn, the supposed babyface, is being booed. The story boils down to Zayn as the underachiever who can’t get the job done, while the newer, dominant Williams plays the role of his bully.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the excitement around that match, a heel turn for Sami would open up a plethora of fresh storylines. With the seeds being planted last week between him and Rhodes, a feud featuring Zayn as the jealous heel fed up with Cody\u2019s endless title shots could really work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another intriguing option is LA Knight. With his WrestleMania 42 plans still up in the air, a storyline between the two could be compelling. It could be framed as a battle between two stars who feel misplaced and misused by the company, with the winner earning a title shot shortly afterward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Desperation Angle<\/b><\/h2>\n

Despite having touched on this motive, it deserves a closer look. If this became the core of Zayn\u2019s new character, it could work incredibly well, not just for him, but for the fans watching on a weekly basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Having Zayn drop the \u201cbe nice to everyone\u201d act in favor of a locked-in focus on feeling underappreciated, by both the fans and management, would create a compelling narrative that the audience could truly get behind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite being a four-time Intercontinental Champion, a former United Tag Team Champion, and, most recently, the United States Champion, Sami can argue that he is completely locked in on becoming world champion and that he no longer cares what obstacles he has to bulldoze to reach that long-sought-after goal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, Sami Zayn has shown plenty of heart, but it\u2019s time we saw the same \u201cruthless aggression\u201d John Cena famously debuted with. Instead of playing the hero like Batman or Superman, Sami should adopt the mindset of Thanos: having a total disregard for anyone in his way and keeping a focus on his goal. Just as Thanos was obsessed with the Infinity Stones, Zayn must be consumed by his quest to become a World Champion. <\/span><\/p>\n

If WWE finally pulls the trigger on this transformation, they won’t just be refreshing a stale character; they\u2019ll be unleashing a desperate, dangerous version of Sami Zayn who is finally ready to take by force the title that has eluded him for over a decade.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
