That is the trajectory of Sami Zayn\u2019s character, and whether the time has finally come for him to snap and embrace his dark side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WWE fans live for a heroic babyface they can rally behind, but there is an undeniable electricity that comes when a beloved figure finally breaks. This left online fans calling the segment \u201cawkward,\u201d while the live crowd in the arena voiced their frustration by booing Zayn once again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many fans felt the move was desperate; it seemed Zayn wanted to remain in the \u201cGolden Boy\u2019s\u201d shadow rather than risk being left outside of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With online discourse growing and arena crowds clearly growing tired of this \u201clame duck act,\u201d it\u2019s time to examine what is driving this backlash and why it\u2019s officially time for Zayn to hang up the superhero costume and finally embrace the villain role.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> The Underdog Character is Getting Stale<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest complaint among many fans regarding Zayn\u2019s current WWE run centers on his persistent \u201cunderdog\u201d gimmick. At the same time, he could target the company for never truly believing in him and for lying about the rewards of hard work bringing success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2><b> Being a Heel Once Again, But a Different Kind\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many forget that if WWE were to pull the trigger on a Zayn heel turn, they would technically be repeating history. His initial turn took place at Hell in a Cell on October 8, 2017, when he aligned with Kevin Owens and cost Shane McMahon the match.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also explored other heel personas, such as \u201cThe Great Liberator\u201d from 2019 to 2020, where he managed Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro after returning from injury. One of his more intriguing heel characters was \u201cThe Conspiracy Theorist,\u201d run from 2020 to 2022, where he claimed WWE management was actively conspiring against him, bearing a striking resemblance to the current attitude of the man he holds a 0-12 record against.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His most iconic heel persona, however, came when he joined \u201cThe Bloodline\u201d as the \u201cHonorary Uce\u201d. While aligned with WWE\u2019s biggest draw, Roman Reigns, the Usos, and the legendary Paul Heyman, he managed to become a massive fan favorite despite operating as a heel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zayn\u2019s \u201cnice guy\u201d persona has run its course, leaving his character feeling stale. Williams carries a heel edge that fans love, while Zayn, the supposed babyface, is being booed. The story boils down to Zayn as the underachiever who can&#8217;t get the job done, while the newer, dominant Williams plays the role of his bully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the excitement around that match, a heel turn for Sami would open up a plethora of fresh storylines. With the seeds being planted last week between him and Rhodes, a feud featuring Zayn as the jealous heel fed up with Cody\u2019s endless title shots could really work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another intriguing option is LA Knight. With his WrestleMania 42 plans still up in the air, a storyline between the two could be compelling. It could be framed as a battle between two stars who feel misplaced and misused by the company, with the winner earning a title shot shortly afterward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2><b> The Desperation Angle<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite having touched on this motive, it deserves a closer look. If this became the core of Zayn\u2019s new character, it could work incredibly well, not just for him, but for the fans watching on a weekly basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having Zayn drop the \u201cbe nice to everyone\u201d act in favor of a locked-in focus on feeling underappreciated, by both the fans and management, would create a compelling narrative that the audience could truly get behind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being a four-time Intercontinental Champion, a former United Tag Team Champion, and, most recently, the United States Champion, Sami can argue that he is completely locked in on becoming world champion and that he no longer cares what obstacles he has to bulldoze to reach that long-sought-after goal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, Sami Zayn has shown plenty of heart, but it\u2019s time we saw the same \u201cruthless aggression\u201d John Cena famously debuted with. Instead of playing the hero like Batman or Superman, Sami should adopt the mindset of Thanos: having a total disregard for anyone in his way and keeping a focus on his goal.
